Apparently Ameritrade is offering a free palm T3 Titanium ($399 value), if you open an account with at least $10,000 for at least six months. You need to open it before the end of this month (May). I have no affiliation with Ameritrade and can't recommend this promotion, just thought I'd pass on something I came across.

I figure if you have $10K to invest you can probably afford to shell out $400 for the palm on your own.

Agreed. 👍

If you invest 10k well, you could probably make more then 400 bucks off the interest over 6 months

Try one day.

I have made more then 5% over 6 months before. Although I guess in today's stocks market that might not be as easy as it was 4 years ago.

No. I meant that I can do it in one day.

what makes you so sure that you can gaurantee making 4% in one day? I'm sorry, but stocks arn't that volatile...maybe if you're lucky

at the company where i used to work...i saw portfolios (mostly high-net-worth individuals) gain over 20-50% from dec '00 - present, with a std deviation less than that of the s&p 500. i know, i work for a financial genius.

my own (decidedly non-high-net-worth) portfolio, an ira rollover, grew ~ 55% (more aggressively invested though) in about 1.5 years.

so it is possible, theoretically....

he probably forgot to mention that there are times when he loses 4% in one day also... 😀

Over 1/03 - 5/04? Anyhow a good mix of high yield stocks approaching their ex dividend dates with some investment grade debt with some calls and puts to hedge it all I can pull it off. I never said it was guaranteed (nothing in life is) but making $400 with $10000 to play with? Please.

Yep, plus if you invest there is the chance that you could make much more then 400 bucks.

from 3/03 - 5/04....but hats off to you if you can day-trade/hedge it. i've always been a buy-and-hold person myself - too wimpy to handle the pressure

but i agree with you - $400 is peanuts compared to what you can do with $10k. my (and our other clients') portfolio is proof. 😀 but if they're offering the palm to you for investing the money - why not take it? you not only have a potential 8% return in the long run, but a nice new toy to play with in the short run as well.

Do you really think I'd even mention giving someone $10k for six months only to get a $400 palm. One does not get into medical school AND have $10k for being so stupid.

Ameritrade is a brokerage account. You put your money in there, and buy stocks, bonds, whatever you want. You can move it around just like you can in any other brokerage account. In fact, I'm not sure how you buy and sell stocks without a brokerage account. This is simply the opportunity to get a small "gift" while you do so.

Secondly, work on your logic regarding the "duh..if I had $10k I could afford to buy one". No s**t. However, wouldn't you rather get one for free? I guess financial logic like that is why you probably don't have any money to begin with. Or maybe, you just headed straight from undergraduate to med school, which is cool, but maybe, just maybe, there are people out there who looked at the $100,000+ it costs and decided to work for a bit and save a few coins.

I'm not selling anything, I'm not endorsing anything, I'm not even trying to get anyone to do anything. I'm sharing information that granted, may only apply to a small portion of students, but nonetheless it is to their advantage and has absolutely no bearing to everyone else.

Give me a break.

Some people do not realize that a lot of individuals accumulate wealth by taking advantage of freebies, discounts, rebates, etc.

If I didn't already have an Ameritrade account, it would be a great way to get a free PDA. That leaves me $400 more money to invest in stocks, which I'm averaging a cool 19% return on investment this year. Sweet!!

The offer has been extended until 06/15/04. Thanks for the information, by the way. I've been thinking about opening an account with Ameritrade and this gives me an incentive to do it now.

You said in ONE day....im sure people can do it over a period of maybe a few days or weeks....but ONE day? i doubt it

Are you required to invest? or can you just let it sit there for 6 months and accumulate interest. and does there always have to be a minimum balance of $10,000? thanks....shi+ why not...a free pda...my money sits in bank one accumulating like .0001% interest anywayz

if your money just sits in the bank get an ING account which you can open with ANY amount of initial deposit and you will make 2% interest. not great and not approaching what other people have made through the stock market but hey this is a savings account that is giving you better interest than any other i could find.

ING Direct has one of the better interest rates for savings accounts.

You are correct that it doesn't have rates approaching what others make in the stock market, but a savings account has one thing that stock markets do not: security.

You are guaranteed that your money you invest in a savings account (as long as it is FDIC insured) will be there next year, plus whatever interest rate they pay. There are no guarantees with the stock market.

I have an ING Direct savings account... I'm wondering when they are going to start raising the APY. Some of the other online banks are starting to outpace them.

The 1/03-5/04 period was the my estimate on what Spu was writing of when she cited the year and a half period over the course of which her IRA portfolio surged 20%. As for the one day gain deal, I already talked about how I could make it happen. Nothing in life is guaranteed but as a trader I would feel very comfortable with the type of portfolio I described.

If you want high savings rates check out GMAC bank.

That is the most idiotic comment i have ever heard -- what were you thinking? You can go ahead and buy yourself a $400 PDA, while smart people get it for free.

I agree its a pretty efficient account - esp it's nice to be able to move money between different accounts (if you have several). but if you want to get one, you should ask someone with ing direct to refer you. then you get $25 and they get $10.
