I was sursprised, and highly skeptical when I was forwarded the following e-mail:

Pass Along the Benefits of Cell

As a current Cell subscriber, you understand the value Cell provides to its subscribers in every issue.

Help spread the word....Because your institute has a site license to Cell online via ScienceDirect, everyone at your institution is entitled to a complimentary print subscription of the journal.

Please forward this email to each of those colleagues at your institute who would benefit from their own complimentary Cell subscription. He or she can simply click on the link below to subscribe:

Thank you for your continued loyalty.

Sincerely,

Mary Lou Emmerich

I became even more skeptical when I went to the website to sign up, and encountered a disclaimer something to the effect of "This offer is only valid while subscription supplies last."

Well, I signed-up none-the-less, and much to my surprise my personal subscription to Cell has been showing up faithfully to my home ever since.

Just a heads up.. if your Institution has a subscription to Cell (I suspect most of us do), and you're interested, it might behoove you to take advantage of this kick-ass offer.

Hey GWD,
I was skeptical at first too, but about a month after I signed up through my institution, I received my first print copy, and have been getting them every two weeks since. It's a great deal. We're really lucky. Now if only other journals would follow suit.

I am sure everyone will be very thankful for the heads up.

Yup....I have been receiving free cell for a while. It is a sweet deal...I now have to figure out how to get free Nature, and I am set!!

Does anyone have links to anymore free science magazines such as this one?

Just wondering, when we click the link to the "start a new free subscription", do we just enter our school as the company name?

I thought it was going to be a great deal as well (and it was, in a way). But, then I realized that my lab already got a free subscription, and I was wasting a fair amount of paper by getting it sent to my house as well.

A post-doc in my lab just got published to the May issue, by the way.

I was talking with another grad student in my lab about this yesterday...does anyone actually read Cell? Those articles are way too long...at least for me.

Definately. As a molecular geneticist, Cell is pretty much the sacred text of our profession.

They also have great review articles.

I'm more of a wikipedia fan ;-)

I'd love to have a cell article, but haven't read one in three-four years. Granted I was in med school for two of those.

Wikipedia is great, and very useful.

But it is not a substitute for the primary literature.

Well I browse cell and only read the stuff that pertain to my area of interest. I would go crazy if I were to read the whole thing every other week. Not my cup of tea!

Depends on your area of investigation.

If you are a biochemist, or molecular geneticist, I'd say Cell is your Hall of Fame.

I'd much rather get a first author pub in Cell than even Science or Nature...

That's basically a free pass to a PhD, IMO.

If I get published in Nintendo Power, can I also get a free pass to a PhD?
