Should I mention that I'm a mason? It's an organization that I"ve put time into and would like to mention it, but many people believe it's a goat sacrificing cult or something like that.

why wouldnt you? The freemasons are from what I understand the oldest fraternal organization on the planet....and so so many interesting conspiracy theories!!

Nah man I dont think any med school adcoms buy into that conspiracy crap....a lot of older man are freemasons...so what happens if an ADCOM member...or two are freemasons? Chaching!!
 
Put it but be prepared to talk about it in depth. Saying "It's a secret" when asked specific questions won't go over well.
I think it's definitely worth it, since it is rather unique.

you get invited. We have at least one on staff. No harm in mentioning it OP, you never know who also might be a mason.
 
Why did you have to bring down the twin towers in order to go after oil in the middle easy? Couldn't you have done it another way?

My dad is one and some of his mason buddies are pretty important people. It has got my ass out of a LOT of trouble when I was younger.

If you've done significant volunteer or community work through the free mason organization, go ahead and list it. Most mature people aren't going to needle you like many in this thread.
 
They may think you apart of the illuminati... that you covered up 9/11... and that you somehow have something to do with the weird artwork and unexplainable buried structures at denver airport. I would keep it on the dl

Relax, no one's needling the OP. They're just having fun with the whole freemason thing. OP should def include it.. if an adcom is a Mason as well, it could be very rewarding for him. If I was an adcom member, I think I'd invite him for an interview just to see if I can find out these coveted secrets by bribing him with an acceptance. no joke. And at the very worst, they'll look at it, say "that's nice, but I don't really care," and read the rest of his app. Nothing to lose.
 
I mentioned it in my app. It came up with two interviewers who were also masons. I don't think it hindered my application in any way. Most people who are educated/not crazy don't believe the conspiracy BS.

At any rate our human sacrifices are still largely unknown by the public so we're fine.

Aren't freemasons obliged to always help fellow freemasons? Seems like a guaranteed acceptance to me...

You should absolutely list all of your volunteer activities but I would not mention being affiliated with the Masons. There are certain religious groups in the US who feel that they have been discriminated against by the Masons and they absolutely loathe the Masonic movement.

Furthermore most fraternal organizations are hurting for members. They are thought of as passe.
 
List it. If someone holds it against you for being a Mason then it's just as likely they may hold anything else against you. I was a proselyting missionary for the LDS church (Mormon) for two years. Plenty of people have ill feelings toward the LDS faith but everyone I talked to on the interview trail was curious about the experience, as they would be your Free Masonry.

i would list it, but stress the service/volunteer aspect of it. not the secrecy part.
 
What's up brother? Best to save that for the interview. If you are lucky... you are in like flynn. Otherwise, don't mention. Get through medical school then look for your brothers. At that point it will be more important than you could ever imagine.

It can be family or a friend. You have to get to know them and be "vetted." My grandfather was a 33rd degree mason, but if you know someone who is a mason and you are interested you can ask them. I wouldn't have gotten an invite solely on the basis of my grandfather. They are hurting for younger members at the moment.

That being said, all you really have to be is a decent person that wants to give back to the community, believe a few spiritual things (which I take with a grain of salt), and they'll invite you to join. There are a number of rituals you have to go through before you're a full fledged mason, though. It's definitely worth it. I'm the youngest person in the lodge by far, and I've gained tons of knowledge from the other members. When I'm with them it's almost like my grandfather is alive again.

Thanks for the replies Dr. Z, I guess my problem is that even if I am interested, I would not know the first place to find a Mason interested in talking with me.

A masons lodge. I made friends with a mason while volunteering and he told me that I should go ask to join at the lodge in town.
 
If you are applying to Weill Cornell Med School in Qatar I would definitely not mention it. If you aren't I doubt you will take any crap for it, but if you get an Arabic interviewer there is a slight chance that they may be turned off by it due to the whole conspiracy of Zionist affiliations.

Now is it Baphomet or Lucifer you masons worship?

I know that may not come out as offensive on a pre-med forum, but Islam actually banned freemasonry due to the whole "conspiracy" thing and your statement could easily offend someone: the whole you have to be uneducated and crazy to believe the conspiracies. After it all, it was a bunch of extremely educated and open minded people who started the whole Bush caused 9-11 conspiracy, so I would just take it easy throwing around statements like that. I know it wasn't meant to be harmful I just don't want you to get yourself into an argument over nothing.

Conspiracy theorists are either uneducated or (rarely) educated people who willfully ignore their educated side to accept what is usually stupidity. Look up Occam's razor.
Are there conspiracy theorists that are adcoms? I'm sure there are some, but I can't imagine there are too many of them out there.

At the very least it may give you something interesting to talk about, although I did not get one single question about one religiously affiliated group (non-cult, ofc) I was a part of during college.

1. Must be a dude
2. Must not be coerced to join
3. Must be able to support yourself
4. Never been part of a group that tried to overthrow the government (srs)
5. Must be 18 years old (I believe is the age now)
6. Must believe in a supreme being
7. Must have signatures from 2 masons from the same lodge
8. Must be a moral, intelligent, and caring person

that's all I can think of for now

Out of all the groups/organizations/clubs/whatever I've been a part of, this is by far the most rewarding and meaningful to me and I highly recommend joining. I can't wait to be a part of the shriners 😀
 
Sounds like a cult to me.
