Washington was found to be the "blackest" surname based on a recent study.

Also, basically all last names have historical and ancestral meaning so I'm not sure why you're confused. As for first names, well, it varies, and there are some obvious differences based on culture.

My friend in high school's last name is Robinson and she got some college information in the mail geared toward URMs, so it does happen. She is white.

You be surprise how some people judge one's name and assume what neighborhood they grew up in.

And I am chilling son. I just find these topics uncalled for and kind of stereotypical. Why are people so concerned with URMs anyway? We are not taking anyone's space in medical school 😀

Surnames are different from first names.

Dude, we go over this crap everytime a URM thread starts up. I was just having fun because these all turn into flame wars. I will quietly exit.

Good luck to you. Try to enjoy med school or pre-med, whatever it is you do, and don't freak out too much when people stereotype, because they do and will.

I actually do have a problem with that. His statement implies that we AA are imbued with some magical aptitude for entertaining people. I know a lot of non-minorities won't care or won't know to care, but it does get old after a while.

🙄 Didn't mean for this thread to turn into an explosive name-bashing session.

On a lighter note, as I said earlier, I work in a community where we see a mostly black and Hispanic population. When I first started I was such a clueless small town WASP- much to the patients' amusement, I couldn't get my head around some of the common phonetically spelled names. Example: "Dmonta" = "Dee-MON-tay" "La-a" = "La-DASH-a."

Now I am a pro and rarely misprounounce. I was told the other day by a parent that I was "the first white chick to say her child's name right." Thank you, thank you very much.

No seriously though, there's no point in pretending that there aren't "black" names.... tell me you wouldn't raise an eyebrow if you met a red-haired, freckled white girl named Shaquona O'Flannigan. 🙄 But I imagine that it's more an issue of cultural ownership, pride and cohesiveness, not one of literacy like some of my co-workers suggest. To me it's not much different than Caucasians with Irish or Italian heritage naming their children something that has as association with their background.

I'm half black but don't look it (look brown/lighter). It's funny, if my sister applied, she could put down "black" because she looks (and is) black, but I couldn't because of how light I am and my skintone, and because I just don't look black.
 
Sometimes I feel the need to sign up on internet forums and parade around in my mother's high heels while flaunting my race as if everyone cares.

I'm just kidding, that's negrodamus and futuredoc.

Not true.

I know a guy who was half black who looked white. He applied as a URM and got into plenty schools. I think a few Top 20 US News. He had good GPA/MCAT though so his stats already put him in 90%+ acceptance.
