Hello! I was wondering if there are any others that work as a full-time retail pharmacist along with a per diem staffing position in a hospital. I may have the opportunity to do both as I can't decide between the 2. I am currently working as an intern at a grocery chain and as an intern at a small hospital. I feel like in a way they would balance each other out. Any insight would be great!

This is a common arrangement, half of my department’s FT workers either work (or has worked) at another hospital.

It’s great, builds relationships with other places in case one of your employers goes south for whatever reason. Money is great.

Downside is obvious, extra days work, needing to coordinate a schedule, and having to tell someone “no” due to work or life events.

I stopped because I just didn’t need the money anymore and wanted more free time in life, but it was a good arrangement while it was going on. Debating doing it again maybe in about 10-15 years.

Yes I do it, and there are 3 other retail RPh who work prn at this particular hospital as well. Gives you exposure to both fields of pharmacy, which is good for the variety, and you also gain a more complete understanding of how things work in practice for both in-patient and out-. Remember that there are tons of retail RPh dying to escape to hospital but they don't even get looked at if they don't have any hospital experience. Best to get a foot in the door ASAP, so if you have the opportunity you should definitely do it.

Did it for a couple years but no full time hospital positions ever opened up. I got tired of working weekends and holidays so I left the per diem. Enjoy my free time now. Money was ok but not worth it.

Lots of pharmacists do this, as long as you have the time to do it, go for it.
