Fundamental differences between DO and MD

If I had a bad GPA and it really came down to it, I would go to a DO school to get the job that I want. However, I'd be seriously embarrassed to have to explain what Osteopathic means.

Ok, so imma try to sum this whole argument up as concisely as I can from what I have read:

MD's have intelligence modifier +1 while DO's have a speechcraft spell which grants 5 points to bedside manner. Upon being accepted to an MD school you receive "coat of prestige" which grants you +3 points to prestige but unfortunately has the side effect of granting humility -4. BUT DO's has special training in 'osteopathy' an ancient art form that grants them the "Fist of Stillness" which is an instant kill to structural diseases of the spinal column.

I hope I have boiled this debate down to its essence so future generations can refer to this when deciding which degree to pursue.​

See, I could create an alt to add more fuel to the fire, or pretend like I'm seriously saying that DOs suck and whatnot... But I find posting pics/memes is more efficient in communicating "Who ****in' cares?"

One of my school buddies and i shoot like once a week and all our other friends talk of the inevitable zombie apocalypse and coming to our strongholds lol 👍👍

All I know is from personal experience, but my dad works at a hospital in Cookeville, TN, and they recently started getting students from LMU-DCOM and he says they are absolutely brilliant, and it has completely changed his views of DO's. I think Tennessee is probably a little bit behind in terms of the advancement of DO's...meaning they haven't really had much exposure to many DO's, but I know the head of orthopedic surgery at Vanderbilt is (or used to be) a DO and with DCOM there now, I am sure people are starting to be more comfortable with it. Also I am pretty sure it doesn't matter if you are a DO or MD, you will probably be able to teach if you want to. But, I might be a little biased since I just sent in my DCOM deposit 👍😀

But also make Lisa Cuddy get her MBA from Ivy Tech Community College and every nurse have a BSN.

Also, while we're at it, let's make the pharmacy techs the ones giving house his vicodin. Also, make EKG techs the ones that help Foreman out when the patient is in pulmonary arrest


OH - while we're at it, let's have the JD lawyers sit in on the differentials


Also, let's not forget the physical therapists to massage the pain away after the incorrect diagnosis

Cool. I never got into MMOs beyond WoW (and that was only because I had some college friends get into it), which turned into such a massive timesink that I eventually pulled the trigger on my account many moons ago. Don't regret it, but I do miss gaming every once in awhile...

I always laugh when I hear this notion that unless you are in bad circumstances and facing adversity then you aren't in the "real" world. I end up wondering what "real" means when used this way.

I honestly think it's all relative bull****. It doesn't matter what you've done, because someone can chime in saying "You haven't experienced the real world" at any point. I could be a degenerate junkie working 4 jobs and living on the streets and an amputee with no job/unemployment benefits living in a cardboard box would tell me off. 👎

And what I hate is that these people act like coming from a low socioeconomic area and being around degenerates makes that person more virtuous or noble somehow. 😕

:laugh: +1. I'd say the real world would AT LEAST include having worked a job before. I know people that are 22 and have never had a job. Their parents are effectively ATM machines. I don't think weekend trips to Vail in your parent's private jet is real world, if you go by most people's definition. This kind of student is obviously rare though.
 
For the people who want the proof that DO's fight an uphill battle... go to
http://www.nrmp.org/data/index.html It's the match data. The DO and MD difference is also in the mind of the program/residency directors...not just the premed. Whether it's right or not is a different issue. DO's just don't perform as well according to the match data. Also, you can go to USMLE.org and see the pass rates for Step 1, 94% MD, 81% DO.

And it is a very very very very rare thing to find a DO who actually uses OMM

The ACGME match data doesn't take AOA accredited, DO only residency positions into account. No one is arguing that it's more difficult (in some cases very difficult) for DOs to match into certain ACGME positions. However, if you look at some earlier posts in the thread, you'll see that the issues become a bit more clear and comparable when you look at AOA numbers and total chances of matching certain fields in general.

Again, because the USMLE is optional for DO students, it's not really fair to compare pass rates. A DO student who sits for the USMLE also must sit for the COMLEX, so it's unclear if they studied sufficiently for the USMLE, if they took the test just to see how they'd do or keep ACGME residency positions as an option, etc. Personally, I think a better comparison is MD Step I (USMLE) pass rates versus DO Step I (COMLEX) pass rates, which are equivalent (both around 92% from what I remember).

I won't argue with you here, and it's a shame (in my book), especially in primary care practices. However, some of the numbers that are often thrown around on SDN aren't accurate. In one often misquoted study, someone found that less than 2% of DOs use OMM on over 50% of their patients. Many people have misconstrued this over the years to think that less than 2% of DOs actually utilize OMM in clinical practice.

However, if you'd like to review this list provided by a NMM/OMM certification type board (the new AOA site won't let me pull up a list of all the OMM docs), you'll find a good chunk of DOs who utilize enough OMM in their practice to be certified and listed by this organization:

The irony of this too is that the petition essentially just wants a doc on the show who acts, talks, walks like all the others, but has 'DO' on his/her coat and maybe says 'I went to X college of Osteo Med' in some episode. However, this is boring and pointless. The only reason they would bring a DO on House is to point out the differences and give House a chance to hilariously beat them down. Don't think it would really achieve what they're looking for.

Somebody recently told me that there is a DO dermatologist as a character on the HBO show 'Hung.' I've never watched it, but apparently they never really bring up the fact that he's a DO or anything, but just made the character as a DO instead of an MD for some reason??
