I find it hilarious that everybody knows medstudents are broke and are almost exclusively functioning off loans but are still expected to come of out pocket ~5k. I guess it works because we still find ways to put up the cash....

anyway, sorry to derail.
 
Good talks about 4th year. I'm not sure if people also mentioned that in addition to interviewing, you might be going to audition rotations which can have added costs, and step 2 is almost $2000, and at the end of the year you will likely be moving to another area and may need down payments or a couple months rent to start. And then, on top of all that, you finally start acting like an M4 and start planning some ridiculous vacations because you realize you'll never have more than 7 days off again until you finish residency, so you need money for that.

So yes, if you can squirrel away about $10,000 throughout M1-3 to avoid private loans, then do it.
