How do people feel about the future of pathology? Anecdotally (on the Internet, at least), the job market seems to be improving. Have you noticed an uptick in interest in pathology at your school?

The job market in pathology is excellent right now. Good jobs available at good pay, with good lifestyle.

25-30 years ago, when hospitals were closing and labs were consolidating, the job market was abysmal. New med school grads avoided pathology like the plague, leaving mostly senior pathologists. Now those seniors are retiring, so jobs are opening up.

Private practice or firms like Quest who will cut salaries as soon as the labor market dynamics shift?

I’ve noticed that many of the pathologists at my school are happier than the ones on SDN for what it’s worth.

Private practice or hospital/medical group employment.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the average U.S. pathologist makes $267,180 per year based on a 40-hour week. That's not too shabby.
