GA-PCOM 2009- Where are you?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am officially breaking our 5 day period of silence. Six more weeks until the week of orientation, that is exciting. Well that is all I have to say.

I just wanted to say hi to everyone. I have been reading forum for a while, but just getting around to posting. I met some of you at Park Tavern, which was a lot of fun. Looking forward to meeting the rest of you and excited for school to start. Also, if anyone needs a roommate or knows of anyone, let me know, [email protected].

Anand,

I'm looking for a roommate (and an apartment for that matter).

Anybody else out there that has put off looking for an apt? I was calling around various complexes, and there are few that DO NOT ALLOW FULL-TIME STUDENTS as tenants...I thought that was rather odd (Idlewylde and Herrington Court apartments).

Also, does anyone know of any apartments that are within walking distance of GAPCOM? the closest I found were atleast 4.5 miles away - not really walkable/bicyclable, but not a bad drive.

I was hoping for a place that was closer also, but there are not any apts very close. Biking from some would be ok distance-wise, but the roads around the school look pretty busy and only have broken sidewalks. The best bet would be to look at some of the nearby townhome developments for rentals.

Idlewylde didnt tell me that they didnt allow full time students...thats weird. That is one of the places I was thinking about too.

I went apartment shopping yesterday and liked 5375 Sugarloaf but I found out that crime was a serious issue in the area (thugs, fights, drugs, etc.). If anyone with knowledge of this complex would put in their 2 cents it would be very much appreciated. Chatelain park also looked good but its so hard to tell if the apartment lessors are telling you the truth or just trying to make a dollar sometimes. Also if you are already in an apartment that you absolutely love please let me know as I am needing something ASAP. Thanks I can't wait to meet you all.

-Brian

I don't want to sound like I'm making a sales pitch, but I highly recommend checking out The Reserve at Sugarloaf. I have been living here with my fiancée for over a month and we absolutely love it. It's one of the safest apartment complexes in the area, and it's also one of the closest places to campus (a little over 3 miles).

If any of you apartment shoppers out there are interested, you are welcome to swing by my place for a short unofficial tour (or if you just want to hang out :) ). PM me if you want any more info.

Hey guys,

I just got an apartement at Madison at Riversound and think its in a good location. Its about 4.7 miles from school, but its right next to alot of stuff like shopping centers and such. Just a thought.

hmm..well i will be living there and from everything i saw, it seemed like a great place to live...but now that you say this, that is a bit scary..are you talking about a lot of crime in the actual complex?

anyone else living in 5375 sugarloaf?

I know Nicola1926 is planning on living at 5375 Sugarloaf. She posted here this morning, but her message disappeared for some reason (maybe it's just not showing up on my computer). Wherever you all decide to live, contact someone first who has already signed a lease there so you can split the referral bonus with them. The referral is $500 here at The Reserve and at 5375 Sugarloaf, so let us know if you decide to move in.

Good luck finding a place to live. If you can find a house or townhouse to rent with a few other classmates, do it. Avoid the astronomical rent at these apartments if you can, but otherwise come split that referral cash with us :D

Hi everyone,

I am staying at 5375 Sugarloaf, and so far my experience has been wonderful. I have not witnessed any illegal activities nor do I think they occur very often. I must say that 5375 is as upscale and classy as one can get in this area. Its close to school and in the center of everything one could possibly need or want. Sketches is right, referral money is ready and available so before you tell them where you found the apt complex contact someone from our school that could already be staying there. If we work together maybe we can all be compensated. ;) If anyone is interested in staying at 5375 Sugarloaf PM me and we will talk business.

Best Regards,

Hi Everybody. I haven't posted in a while so thought I would say, "hi." I am no longer in the market for a place to live. I will be staying with Snicker and another girl from SC. Snicker has a house a couple of miles from the school. I suppose that could be considered walking distance. I don't mind walking 2.5 miles, but am not sure about walking down Old Peachtree Road. Does anyone know if we have an workout room at the school?

I still don't have a school mail account. Does anyone else have one? Of the 85 people in our class there are a lot who have not posted here. Makes me wonder who they are.

Hey, I just had a thought as I was proofing my post. If there are enough of us wanting to walk to school on that busy road, we could do like the elementary school I have seen around here. They have a long rope and all the kids hold onto the rope with a teacher at each end. Wouldn't that be a great skit for Mad TV?!! OK, so maybe we are too old for that. Or, we could get some of those orange reflective vests. Ok, I guess I will be driving!!

Hey. We will have a workout room at the school (Dr. Evans says so). Your email account ID and password should have already reached you by mail although the interface to the email system is bit more complicated than it needs to be. Make sure to get that orange vest if you walk down old peachtree.

Hey Guys,

I looked for our roommates thread - I think it fell off the face of SDN... anyhow, I am no longer in the market for roomies, but there is another of our classmates - Blaire Long - who is currently looking, but out of the country, so I am trying to help her out. If anyone still needs roomies or knows of anyone still looking, PM me and I will send you her email address. Hope that everyone is doing great! See you all soon :)

Hi everyone:

I spoke to Aisha at the admin office today to inquire about the upcoming DO orientation. Per Aisha, the orientation starts on Aug 10 - 12. Attendance is not mandatory but recommended. Aug 10 will be a day for all students to get to know each other. The next 2 days will be focusing on Student handbooks, introducing the faculty, classes that we will be taking, and all the other important stuff. They are working on finalizing the orientation details and will post it on pcom website by the end of next week. Hope this info helps!

Thanks for the heads up on the work out room. It will probably save my life!

Thanks for the info. I just logged on to say the same. I got an e-mail today about orientation. Now I can have a plan for moving.

Hey, I was wondering if there are any others who, like me, like to cook. Or, if anybody likes to eat! We may be able to work out a deal. Nothin special, just thought we might get together for some good home cookin sometime. What do you think?

Is there a way we can log on to the blackboard page on the www.pcom.edu website? I thought our email password also got us into this page too, but I'm having troubles getting this to work. Any suggestions?

I haven't recieved any information about logging into blackboard. I too used the same password and Id as our email accounts but with no luck. Hopefully they will send us some info on the system soon.

Hey guys! I just wanted to say hi. I've read some of the posts and thought I would finally join in. I tried to log into blackboard also it had no luck. I was just glad I finally received my network info this past Sat.

I also wanted to let anyone know that was interested or was wondering about books that I called today and asked if there was going to be a booklist sent out to us. I was told that they are working with Barnes and Noble and all the books and supplies we will need will be at the book store at the school during orientation and the first week we are there. This way we can get everything we need in one place. Just thought this info might be helpful. :)

Can't wait to meet you all! Only a few weeks left!

Hey guys,

I was wondering whether any information has been posted on what books we will be needing the first quarter. I would like to get this stuff taken care of through their book store at PCOM main branch or half.com before a mad rush during orientation. Please let me know if any of you have any info.

Thanks,

Raj

P.S. Has anyone been up to that Frye's in Duluth for those who are purchasing a laptop? If anybody has any good info on their experiences with laptop purchases (brands/place purchased/satisfaction), please PM me.

The one book I would go ahead and buy right now is the Netter Anatomy Atlas - search on Amazon and Ebay and Barnes and Noble etc. etc., maybe even try the bookstore for Emory Med School. Some senior med students or third-years usually have no more use for them and sell them for $15, whereas a new one is around $60 or so.

BUT, and this is a big BUT: make sure you're not getting a "dirty Netter", i.e. one which has been used inside the anatomy lab during dissections. These are stained with all sorts of cadaver juices and smell really bad - watch out for these as some online sellers will post a nice picture but mail you a really rank one.

Hello to everyone. My name is Josh Hare and I will be attending GAPCOM with all of you in the a few weeks. I was accepted in March and have checked on here periodically but just never got around to registering. I am excited about getting started and I look forward to meeting all of you. I graduated from Samford University in Birmingham, AL this past spring. I also just got married and have a 13 week old son, so I have been getting all kinds of new experiences lately. Anyways hope everyone is doing well and I will see you soon.
Josh

I also was wondering about textbooks and if anyone has a list of books we will need. I was wanting to start looking for them online. Thanks.

I received a reply message from Aisha on a unrelated matter (health insurance coverage) and she added that orientation will go from the 10th-12th and that the first day or two will be informal and not required to attend. It would be a kind of informal get together. I know this info is kind of vague but I hope it helps. My feeling is that is that if we show up on the 10th and 11th they will guide us through the process of getting started with med school. Looking forward to meeting you all.

Thanks to everyone who posted information about orientation. I am really looking forward to starting, so it's nice to finally have a date on my calendar!

Regarding the books for first term, I went ahead and picked up a copy of Rohen's atlas a few weeks ago. I was going to wait to receive the official book list, but I had a 30% off coupon that was going to expire and decided to go ahead and buy it. From what I hear, it comes in handy studying for practicals, as it uses photographs instead of diagrams. You can also use it to gross out your friends and family.

Netter's atlas is definitely a must have, but I read on SDN that you get a free copy when you join SOMA (Student Osteopathic Medical Association). They also make Netter's Anatomy flash cards, but their usefulness depends on your learning style.

I know I am probably a little over anxious, but at least I haven't started reading anything yet. What do you all think? Any word on the official book list?

Yup, Rohen's Atlas is pretty darn good. It's great for the anatomy lab and studying for anatomy practical tests. Netter Atlas is a classic, however. Rohen : Netter :: Honda : BMW i.e. Rohen is reliable and practical and very useful, like a Honda, but you haven't lived till you've done 153 on I-75 in a Bimm and have a beat-up well-worn Netter in your bookcase!

I didn't know about the SOMA deal though (I thought they gave out Stedman's Medical Dictionary?).

Also, I have heard rumours of a bootlegged PDF version of the Netter Atlas available on the web (someone ripped-out and scanned each plate, making a 500 page multi megabyte PDF file). It is too big to email, but I think it can be downloaded from certin sites. I've searched, but I've only come up with long-dead websites and porn. Does anyone know anyone in other med-schools who may have this?

Aisha had replied to a message I sent to PCOM about when we should report. She also said we would be getting a formal notification soon.

Hey, anxious nothing! I bought my books over three years ago. I was so sure I was getting in I wanted to get as many books as I could so I could use the tax write off while I was still teaching anatomy. Everyone at the med school here looked at me like I was crazy for buying books before being accepted. After three years of rejection letters I now understand why. So I have a few anatomy books. Also a good friend of mine gave me the COMLEX study books, so I would have something to do over the summer. I have read a few pages.

I just got my e-mail account. When I checked it there were a couple of messages about BlackBoard that said some of us couldn't access it, yet. They are working on it and it will be up soon. Haven't I heard that a lot, "soon."

Any one know if we can have our PCOM email auto-forwarded to other email addresses? or if we can use Outlook or Outlook express with the PCOM email? I tried but I was limited by my microbiology degree.

Any suggestions?

Although I have not found a way to use our PCOM accounts with another mail client, you can forward a copy of your incoming emails automatically by following these steps:

1. Log into your PCOM Groupwise account
2. Open the options window (click the center button at the top next to exit)
3. Click on the 'Rules' tab
4. Select 'Forward' in the drop-down box and click 'Create'
5. Type in a rule name (such as 'email_forward')
6. Leave the conditional statement blank to have a copy of all new messages forwarded
7. Type the email address you want the messages forwarded to in the 'To:' box
8. Click the save button
9. Click the save button again

I just set mine up this weekend and it works fine. Let me know if you have any questions :D

Hello guys,
My name is CHichi and I just joined the crew. Congratulations to everyone. Is there anyone out there looking for a roommate? I need a female roomate ASAP. Thanks

Hey guys,

I just wanted to let you all know that our schedule of events for orientation is up on the website if you haven't seen it. I am a computer *****, so I don't know how to just post a link... but if you go to the GA-PCOM updates page and scroll down past the new faculty members, there is a little blurb about orientation with a link to the schedule. Looking forward to seeing you all there :)!

Everyone, be sure to check your PCOM email because there was a oversight on the immunization form that was sent to us via mail. It turns out that we are required to have Varicell(a) blood titers and also report the date of your last immunization for Varicell. Just wanted to make everyone aware of this, because I am assuming that we have to have this completed and returned by August 8th. PCOM may send something in the mail as well. If there are any questions you can contact Monica Jones(Student Health) at 215-871-6420.

Best Regards,

hey, sorry it has taken me so long to actually post a message, but i was accepted back in december, so i've been keeping up with your messages. i'm wrapping up my mph at emory in the next couple of weeks and i'm from atlanta. i'm really looking forward to meeting everyone...i'll be in town until school starts, so if you guys want to plan another night out, since i missed the last one, then that would definitely be fun. hope everyone is enjoying their last days of summer! katina

hi everyone!

on the orientation schedule it says that the dress code is business casual or scrubs. i was just wondering what people were gonna wear because those are definitely two extreme choices for dress. i wouldn't want to be the only one to show up wearing either one...thanks for your input!

rachel

I'm going to stick with business casual. It just seems a bit more logical at this juncture in our medical school careers. Plus, I only have a couple pairs of scrubs and they are old and ugly.

Next question: what exactly do you consider business casual (I'm a girl)? I'm only 22 so I've not had much experience dressing myself for the business world (I'm a jeans and t-shirt kind of gal). I'm thinking that skirts and pants that aren't denim are fine for women.

Hope this helps...

Depends on how liberal they are about business casual. My workplace took it to the extreme shorts, sandals, pajamas. I think jeans (no holes and not shorts) would be ok since scrubs are acceptable. Typically it would be khaki type pants/skirt though.

if it has a collar, I think you pass the "business casual" test.

Did anyone else receive our tentative schedule and wonder how we are only taking three credits the first semester? Somone from PCOM-Philly said that they may be combined into one class. But even then how can we only take 3 credits?

Any thoughts. Not that I'm complaining

I wouldn't worry about it, we're not getting out of histo and anatomy that easy! Also, many school have their own way of counting credits, so what 3 credits is to PCOM maybe 15 credits elsewhere, its all relative and doesn't mean much anyway.

On another note: Who here is using the med insurance suggested by PCOM (the Blue Cross Blue Shield thing). Seems a tad pricey. I've found a few other alternatives which are comparable and cheaper and available in GA as well as nationwide, so...

about the insurance, Im getting bc/bs of georgia right now separate from the school for $56/mo. the copays and deductibles are a little higher but compared to $2000 a year I would much rather do the insurance separate from the school.

Hey guys,

Did anyone receive an invoice for the tuition payment? I did and I am not sure why they didn't account for the loan I am also getting. I shouldn't be getting a bill b/c I borrowed the full amount required. Just wondering if anyone else got this!.
