GA school applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello all, I got accepted off the MCG waitlist by phone on Friday. Interviewed on February 6, GPA is 3.86 and MCAT is 26R. Hope this helps somebody who's waiting.

good lord! You must be pretty slick to pull that one off! congratulations!

is it just me, or do i see a trend of mcg pulling high gpa people off the list first. /cry

hope the list isn't ranked purely by gpa :/

Same here....I am a "higher MCAT than GPA" person and I am really worried right now.

I got on campus housing! weeeeee!

seriously guys, its gonna cost me like five bucks to go to med school. The rate for my room is ~$1000. Per semester. 😱

I wonder what chances do I have for MCG.
I have to sign a MPN for DO school but both school uses different lender.

I had 3.98 BCPM and 3.88 when applied with 30 O MCAT.
Now over all has dropped to 3.72 because of C in org II , W in research class and BIOCHEM I audit.

MPNs don't usually need to be signed until pretty close to the deadline, I'd just wait on signing it until late july or august. You should have a pretty good idea by then. And of course check all sdn advice with a professional (mine included 😉)

And congrats to all those getting into MCG! Maybe I'll see you guys in residency some day...

I got a C in orgo I, and I withdrew from several classes, so that won't kill you. I don't see how a 30/3.7 wouldn't get in, honestly. Sorry 'bout that, and maybe you'll get a phone call soon.

what is an MPN?

It's a little piece of paper that basically signs your soul over to the bank you are borrowing your dough from. Stands for master promissory note.

For those of you getting off the waitlist at MCG, did you apply EDP originally (and get deferred) or regular decision?

Getting into MCG is more than just having good stats. Have you called the dean about discussing your file?

I decided to attend Mercer so I will be withdrawing my acceptance from MCG tomorrow (pending a huge epiphany) so hopefully someone here will get a call tomorrow. It is nice to finally be done with this process and begin to move. I just signed a lease today in an amazing area half a mile away from Memorial so I am pretty excited. 😀

How could 1 "C" drop you from a 3.88 to a 3.72 overall? You'd have to have only 30 something cumulative hours for this to happen.

guess we won't be classmates! Good luck over there, the inaugural class should be pretty interesting.

I love you.

I took 17 hrs total after applying--- 14 hrs in fall'07 and 3 hrs in spring'08
My college counted AUDIT class(3hrs) in calculating GPA. In addition, W in research class (3 hrs) and C in org. II (4hrs).

Two guys in my college went for that. They both had bad experience.
None of their concerns were addressed. In fact, one of the guy's file wasn't read until he arrived for scheduled meeting which ran for 1 hr with no suggestion to guide his future course of action.

How many people do you think so far have been taken off the LIST?

I guess 30-40

What's the address?

I did that this year. While I didn't get any direct answers about my applications, I did get insight into the process of determining who is a good fit, what they look for, why they look for whatever they look for, and time-tables.

All in all I thought it was helpful in the way that I'll approach the next cycle.

Got the call from MCG today! 3.7 GPA, 30 MCAT. Interviewed in Fall 2007, so hang in there all you early interviewers, hope is still alive!

Sorry fahimaz, I didn’t mean that I didn’t accept the invitation, just that I hope this helps somebody with low stats to still have some hope…cuz I sure didn’t think I had any! yeah bodonid, I had a really good interview…and a WHOLE LOTTA prayer! BTW, which dorm are you in? how does the whole housing thing work?

Well, that sucks. So you couldn't even find out if there's a deficiency in your app? Oh well. At least you have one med school acceptance to fall back on, which is one more than me.

I guess 30-40

I hope so. Keep it going MCG!

Hey thats about when I withdrew, thats pretty cool, congrats on the acceptance. And Polynikes I will be on Columbus. I am strongly considering walking to class, lol.

Sorry Bodonid, but who knows there is always residency.

So the GPA for those coming off the waitlist is dropping, slowly but surely. I hope that means my 3.6 gpa is next.

Columbus is right near the hospital. Good stuff.

But I doubt you'll be walking, especially in the summer.

Well, I have a high 3.8 and I haven't heard anything. I have a 28O as well.

Doesn't matter anyways though, because I'm going to decline it.

so i am waitlisted at MCG and pretty much planning on reapplying (applied regular decision, interviewed in Dec). the MCG website says 140 out of 190 members of last year's entering class applied EDP, so clearly there is a strong preference for EDP applicants, and a ton of regular decision people competing for relatively few spots 🙁. I was really surprised to find out how strongly they prefer EDP apps...no other schools seem to do this. it doesn't seem fair that applying to other schools seems to hurt your chances there so much. and if you don't get in EDP it's basically too late to apply anywhere else. does anyone know the rationale behind this policy? basically they want people who only want them and no other school? they want you to throw all of your eggs in one basket and have no options if you don't get in EDP? are they trying to make sure people who will likely get in elsewhere can't use MCG as a safety?

anyway, I'd really like a shot at other schools this time around, but if i don't do EDP for mcg i feel like i'm practically resigning myself to their alternate list for next year too given the way the numbers break down....is anybody else facing this dilemma?

What's going on peoples! I am pretty much new to SDN! My hopes and dreams are to pursue, just as you all, a career in medicine!

My stats:
B.S. (Major in Biology Concentration in Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry
Minor in Chemistry)
Undergrad Cumulative GPA: 3.64
Major GPA:3.82

M.S. Biology
Thesis-based (Did my research in California!<-- Amazing environment!!)
GPA: 4.00

MCAT: Taking it this May 27th! O YEA! A little nervous since this test determines my entire life...but more eager than anything!

EC: (1) Endless hours @ Emory Egleston's Children Hospital
(2) Shadowed Reconstructive Surgeon for 3 month duration
(3) Work night-shifts at USTeleradiology as Radiology Assistant! ( I love this job!...Radiology is the field I want to train in for sure!)
(4) Graduate Research Assistantship (1- first authorship Publication in the works and 2 noted publications)
(5) Teaching Assistantship at my College.
(6) all the necessary clubs w/ volunteer hours (tri-beta/amsa/chemistry clubs)
(7) DEAN's list every semester (awarded Dean's key on my graduation)

etc....

I am just waiting on my MCAT date!! I just wanted to get some feedback! You guys make me nervous!! I see people in their third year applying!! That's crazy...but I guess its the price you pay for becoming the person you want to become right?

I really want to go to JERSEY! But I lived in GA my whole life (GSU PANTHERS 4 LIFE!!)...so if I ever get accepted here...for sure I am going!

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE 👍!! (esp POLYNIKES...you got it...don't stress so much!)

cheers!

Med School is not like any other type of graduate-level education. This may seem like an obvious statement, but it's really not. One of the reasons being accepted is so difficult (nationwide acceptance hovers around 50%) is that the number of schools is relatively few (some states don't even have medical schools). This is not on accident. Think of the resources a school has to have available to have a medical school: an affiliated teaching hospital that can support 3rd/4th year clerkships, a huge amount of money for labs, equipment, qualified faculty, etc. Besides all that, I think the AMA plays a part in keeping the number of medical schools relatively small. In our profession, a mistake can mean life or death - not that you loose the case of your client (techinically I guess that can mean life or death too...)

What all this translates to is that med schools get to be very selective. I see a couple reasons for this:

1. They have an obligation to weed out the the applicants who will make lousy or dangerous doctors.

2. Because most medical schools (especially state schools like MCG) receive some state funds to offset the cost of attendance, they are obligated to select applicants who will fulfill certain mission criteria (i.e. have a strong desire to practice in Georgia, or have a strong desire to work with the underserved/rural populations).

Believe me, its not just MCG. Mercer has taken up to 40 out of its class of 60 from EDP! That's 2/3 who were accepted before October 1 of the year they applied. When you "put your eggs in one basket" it shows a level of committment to the mission of the school and I think schools respect that.

God that was exhausting to read.

newbies FTW

so i was accepted to morehouse school of medicine yesterday off the waiting list. 🙂

i forgot that their first classes for incoming freshmen start july 7th. 😱

i'm so relieved to have an acceptance.

waiting reallllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly sucks.

Congrats! how big is their class size?

lol. sorry about the long post.

feedback anyone?

**question: what was your last score on the AMCAS practice MCAT and what was your actual MCAT score? Is it true you score higher?

i had the same score (breakdown too) as the exam I took the week before the real thing. But if anything, most people's scores will go up by an average of about one point. Don't expect any miracles, though.

My advice? Come back on May 28th. Use these last few days to talk to friends and family, get some good practice & high yield bio, and chill out. But don't waste time on SDN. You can do that when you're waiting for your scores to come back!

Congrats! how big is their class size?

They claim to have the smallest class size in the nation at 52 or 55? I forget exactly.

It's kinda funny. I honestly thought I'd have a better shot at being pulled off the MCG waitlist over Morehouse. Funny how things work out when you least expect them.

I went up a few points, but the wait to get my scores was unbelievably trying on me. That real test was exceptionally more difficult than the practice tests.

I was just kidding with you by the way, good luck to you for the application cycle.

Mayo is like a class of just over 40, if not exactly 40.

thanks for the advice!

alright well I am out until May 28th! I will keep you updated on my MCAT!

cheers

At one time, I'm sure Morehouse's class size was the smallest...they seem to have been steadily growing the last few years. When I applied there a couple years ago a lot of people were complaining that they had gone from 35 to 40. They're an interesting school....most medical schools try to distance themselves somewhat from their "parent" university while still allowing students to use undergrad facilities. Morehouse makes a point that they are not even the same school as the undergrad which shares the same name. They make it seem as if someone decided to build a medical school on the undergrad. campus of Morehouse and then coincidentally just decided to give it the same name! I guess that's fine, but I don't think med students have access to undergrad. gyms or anything.

MCGers check your email, some if not all finaid/scholarship notifications went out today.

I talked to the finaid lady a few times and she said that most scholarships aren't distributed until 3-5 weeks before classes begin; although some are awarded earlier.

I decided to withdraw my accpetance from MCG today so I hope that opens up a slot for someone who is patiently waiting.

Good Luck to all!!!!
