Hey guys,

Just got a call from my Mercer ADCOMM member last night. Any of the other Dec. 13th interviewees get in?

Also, does anyone have any ideas on where they will be going (i.e. Savannah or Macon)? Savannah sounds great, but I am leery about it being new. I'd like to hear any praise or criticism of the Savannah campus that you all might have.

Congrats to anyone else that has been accepted!

I am going to the Savannah campus. My reasons aren't all that great. I think the smaller class size would be interesting, and allow me to get to know my fellow classmates better. I think Savannah would be more fun then Macon in terms of stuff to do. I also have heard that Memorial is a good hospital. A friend of mine that is going to Savannah has already seen the facilities and told me that it is supposed to be really cool. (Shrug)

I would be interested to hear other people's thoughts on Savannah vs. Macon...

I visited the Savannah campus a few days after my interview and the facilities were great (high tech and good looking). The med school buildings are currently being renovated, so it is hard to say what they will look like. I feel sure they will be nice though. They will include a library, clinical skills center, and small-group discussion rooms just like Macon. I know the clinical program is well established and there are opportunities to pursue cancer research if you are so inclined. I too think Savannah is a fun town with a history and culture all its’ own.

Dr. Murray assured me that the PBL experience in Savannah would be identical to the one in Macon. Most of the faculty will be new hires, but some experienced members will be relocating to Savannah from Macon. Some of the new faculty will be coming from prestigious medical schools like Mayo and UPenn if I remember correctly. I was also assured that they would have extensive training (I think he said 7 months) in PBL. However, I cannot help but think there is an added benefit to the established PBL curriculum in Macon. But who knows, that is just my two cents.

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone who's interviewed at Mercer recently also applied to oos schools and if it came up in the interview? I know that they are really big on choosing students who want to stay in state, so this would be kind of an awkward topic to explain in an interview.

I was not asked about OOS schools, but I told them I applied to 12 schools. However, I assured them that Mercer was my top pick and that I would be coming back to Georgia no matter where I attended. My theory is make them compete for you.

Moose, I'm a Dec. 13 interview.

Let's see, I'm one of the two males, and I'm the male that sat on the side of the table with the females during that first little talk in the morning.

I'm the other male. Congrats on getting in. Your going to Savannah right?

INTERVIEW/ACCEPTANCE ratio for MCG?

INTERVIEW/ACCEPTANCE ratio for MCG?

It seems to go from year to year. Like according to their admissions bulletin last year they had like a 1000 instate apps for a 190 spots so not even looking at interviews there it's around 20% (not counting the 5% oos), so those of us who interviewed should be above that I'm hoping! 🙂 Though they took something like 140 edp for their class last year. So I'm not sure if they adjust their number of interviews to accommodate. From what I've heard they only took like a 100 edp this year, but I have no confirmation of this so take it with a grain of salt. Couldn't find any numbers about how many interviews they give unfortunately...

Hmmm...I was told that 140 of their matriculates last year originally applied EDP but were not all accepted by October. I though many of those "140" were EDP rollovers. My source for this info is hearsay. Just out of curiosity, how sure are you that they took 140 during EDP last year?

INTERVIEW/ACCEPTANCE ratio for MCG?

www.medschoolready.com

This web site has data on your question. It's from 2006, but it will give you a rough estimate. Check in your premed office, they should have a MSAR that can give you more recent data. But like dd said, it changes a lot from year to year.

Go to that link, it takes you to a page on their admissions bulletin. About halfway down it talks about their early decision program a bit. It doesn't talk about the spill over, so it's possible. I was wondering those rollovers do they make them interview again or just table them and compare them to the other applicants?

Yeah in my first post I think I made it sound like 140 acceptances came from epd, that was just the number of apps they took.

I've heard that if you interview EDP and don't get accepted, they don't interview you again. Once again, this is hearsay.

Hi all,

I'm a GA resident. I am currently in the Navy. I'm applying to all GA schools and a lot of others.

ton of clinical work
Ton of shdowing
Ton of extracurricular activites

Overall GPA: 3.5
Science GPA: 3.2
MCAT: Taking it April 5th

:luck:

I originally applied EDP to MCG back in June. My first MCAT score came back and wasn't what I was expecting, and I was deferred to regular decision. I retook the MCAT and applied to Mercer. I have since been accepted to Mercer and have an interview with MCG on January 30th. I didn't get to interview for EDP, so I don't know if those who did and got deferred have to re-interview. (Shrug)

Im a GA resident. Just waiting on my letter for a interview.

has anyone on this thread been accepted to MCG? It seems like this is the Mercer c/o 2012 What Up thread! Kind of weird since Mercer has a smaller class size than mcg or emory.

Anyone else still waiting for december interview acceptances? Anyone gotten in? I asked about 2 1/2 wks ago, but surely the AdComs have met in the new year by now- right?

Also, since there are so many Bears here (Mercer's mascot) are any of you taking the country doctor scholarship? Anyone have any opinions about it? Just asking because one of my friends is doing it.

Hi, I've posted on this thread before, but in case any of you don't remember, I'm a first year at Mercer. About the Country Doc thing...

Its a personal preference, but you really have to be careful when thinking about it. I know they probably mentioned it a little in your interview and if you are accepted you will have an ENTIRE DAY in June where you have to listen to people talk about scholarship/loan opportunities, but I'd think about it now so you don't make rash decisions in the "heat of the moment".

Now, there are a couple of similar "scholarships", but most of them involve the following: essentially, they will pay about $20,000 a year toward tuition/books/fees. While that's a great chunck of money, I'm sure most of you have realized its not even close to a "full ride". For accepting the money, what does it lock you in to? You will be required to choose a residency in general family practice, general internal medicine, general pediatrics, general ob/gyn, or general surgery. I say "general" because they don't want you specializing...at least not until you have paid back your debt in terms of years of service.

You will also be required to stay in state and practice in a community that is medically underserved/rural as defined by the state board of medical education. Of course, this being Georgia that translates to over 100 counties and most are in desirable places to live. Obviously if big city living is your thing, don't do it because you won't live within 60 miles of Atlanta. Here is a link to the scholarship and the eligible counties:

http://www.mcg.edu/students/finaid/PDF/SMEB.pdf

My biggest hang-up (other than knowing what residency I HAVE to do before I ever set foot in medical school) is that the state board owns you for those years of payback and can require that you move to a different location if they don't think you're serving them where you're at.

If you are ever in breach of contract you are immediately liable for all funds plus interest accrued. Of course that's fairly nice. Some of these "Scholarships" have TRIPLE payback clauses (i.e. for every $20,000 they give you, you pay back $60,000 should you break your contract).

Just think carefully about it. I'm not discouraging anyone, I'm just telling you why I didn't do it!

I am from (semi)rural GA, and I plan to work in an underserved area anyway. My big question is, is the scholarship need based? I can't seem to find a good answer to that question, and I tried calling directly but the number on the website was disconnected/old. I cannot demonstrate sufficient need going solely by the numbers, though my education would have to be paid almost entirely by loans. (And whose isn't, right? What is need once you are talking about med school? Everyone pays back their loans AFTER, when we are all on an equal footing! Am I wrong?) Anyway, thanks for the info!

And has anyone who interviewed at MCG seen their class rings with just the skull, cross-bones, and year of graduation? Very pimp. I may decide to go there just to get one of them rings! And they are limited to med students. Not even DMDs can buy them. I love little things like that.

Anyone have thoughts about the hospitals? I like M.C.C.G., but I have only been a few times.

I haven't seen those rings, actually haven't even heard about them...

The hospitals seemed nice enough, though nothing seemed all together original compared to some of the others I've seen. I did think the children's hospital was pretty cool. One thing I was wondering about was the area mcg is in. The hospitals and campus are nice enough, but if you leave that immidiate vicinity things look quite different. Just wondering if anyone knew if crime was much of a problem for the students?

And for the ladies...

Those are pretty awesome...they have the whole secret society feel. Am I a doctor, or pirate who knows??? 😛

You beat me to that comment. Those are pretty intense.

When I had an interview at Mercer on January 10th, there were six people.
I wonder how many of us will get accepted?

Ms. Putnam said some of us will hear back on Wednesday on th 23rd. How many people were interviewed on the 13th of December? And, how many got accepted on the 9th? I am just trying to the ratio of accepted/interviewed for each interview.

Good luck with everybody!!!!!🙂

There are six interviewees on every interview date, the only trend with acceptances is the earlier you interview the better chance you have.

just got my invite from MCG. even came with a late christmas card

I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about like a second look or something for MCG. I dont think I remember hearing about one, but I am always in the dark. Good luck to everyone interviewing at MCG, its a super easy interview!

Many people say this, but nobody gets the same interviewer on the same day. My AdCom seemed like he was trying to make the environment unfriendly just to see how I would react. He also said "tell me about yourself" and then didn't speak for 15 min or so. Just nodded his head.
After that he was nice, though.

Has anyone gotten an acceptance from MCG non-EDP? I interviewed back in late Oct, yet I haven't heard anything since then. I have called to make sure they had everything they needed, and they said yes. Alternatively, does anyone know any specifics about when the committee meets and how often they send letters? They just said I could hear anytime up to April 1 on the phone.

I'm pretty sure I interviewed on the first day of non-EDP (10/22) and I haven't heard anything.

I'm not going to be super surprised either when that april 1st turns into april 30th. 😡

I was a non edp applicant. Interviewed on Oct. 23rd and Accepted 11/15 by mail. But when I was there, my adcom interviewer said they would be having a lot more activity with acceptances late Jan and mid Feb. So I wouldn't stress yet!

This is just hearsay, but I heard they meet this week for the first time since early December/ late november.

Damn... should have gone to med school. Those rings are pretty sweet! Guess since they don't make 'em for us dent students we'll just have to get grillz that have our graduation year and degree. 😀

I'm interviewing Feb 1st at MCG too. Does anyone know how many people they interview each day?

I think at MCG it can vary, but I interviewed with 9 other kids back in December.

There were like 10 at mine (I think), probably no fewer than 8 or 9. There are occasionally people who don't show up too, so it may vary.

But don't think its usually 10 interviewees just because of me and dd128, because we had the same interview date.😀
