GA school applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just got denied at MCG. But I'm sooo glad they didn't drag it out for another 3 months. At least there's some movement on their end. Good luck to everyone else!

I didn't think they sent outright rejections from MCG for in staters nearly this early. Sorry 'bout that, hopefully you got in somewhere?

Did you ever interview? If you never interviewed this probably means they have totally finished scheduling interviews now.

Thanks. No interview. I just checked the rejection thread and I am the first rejection for MCG! 🙂 I did get in somewhere else in GA so it's alright. I'm going to frame my rejection letters and hang them in my future office.

I guess this means they'll be finishing their interviews in feb, and hopefully we'll start to hear some word of where we stand...

Has anyone ever gotten an acceptance call from ms. putnam?

Yeah, she actually called me. It took me a second to realize it was her though, lol. She said she always asks the adcom if she can make some of the calls because it is one of her favorite aspects of the job. If it is not her it is usually the adcom member who interviewed you.

What is the latest date that anyone has for an MCG interview? Mine is the 26th, I was not sure if that is one of the latest dates or not.

yeah that is the latest I have heard. don't think i heard it on sdn, though, so i think you might be interviewing with a friend of mine. Good luck, but with the last possible date I'm sure you know you need it. I really hesitated to withdraw from mercer, because i didn't want to have to disappoint ms putnam (like she really cares anyway, tons of people withdraw every year)

I'm sure she doesn't care, but lots of people around here appreciate it 👍

Have you actually done it yet? Can you just call them or do you have to write a formal letter?

Yall hang in there. Everything about med school is a marathon...not a sprint. For those of you who've seen my posts you know that I applied to Mercer EDP three times, and didn't get in till the third. So, I certainly know how it feels to wait it out. This is the time of the year it seems the longest. It'll get crazy again around April and if you're waitlisted, I'm sorry to say, it won't be over for you until August. They always have one or two who get in off the wait list really late. So, be ready.

For the one who said they were going to frame their MCG rejection letter...I hear you. I've got rejection letters from U. Vermont, Penn State, Creighton, Drexel, U. Maryland, U. Wisconsin, Morehouse, USUHS, MCG, Wake Forest, and two from Mercer. I have wait list letters from Mercer, MCG, Morehouse, and USUHS. And I have acceptance letters to St. George, Ross, GA-PCOM, and Mercer. I have to be honest though, in the end, the joy of that one Mercer acceptance outweighed all my thoughts of retribution and its the only one I've got framed! Hang in there and don't give up.

Finally, Ms. Putnam is great. She's not just that way to applicants. A couple weeks ago, we were finishing group and since it was noon we were all starving. When we came out into the atrium she and Dr. Clifton had set up a long table with an ice cream buffet. They served us ice cream and toppings. It was awesome. I truly believe the forms connections with many applicants and does care when someone doesn't get in. Especially if she can really tell you want to be at Mercer.

I'm honestly not sure whether she has anything to do with who gets in. I do know she's not ON the committee. I wouldn't be surprised though if she doesn't have some say. But, the third time I applied EDP, they told us not to expect to hear anything until the first of October. Well, she called me on Sept. 14 to tell me she had gotten special permission to call. She cried when she told me. That's how much she cared.

And FYI, since she's so great and all of you have good things to say about her, I've directed her to this particular thread a time or two to see your uplifiting comments. So, always make sure that's what they are because she really does care about you guys.

I love answering questions. Feel free to contact me anytime.

Good luck

What are we applying for, Elementary school??

Just kidding.

Uh, anonymity?? It wouldn't take two seconds for her to figure out who we are. With the low number of applicants, even an anonymous MDApps page is a thin veil.

haha, I know right. One look at my avatar and she'll know precisely who I am 😛

That's sort of why I took my mdapps off the front page...

Hey guys--been around these forums on and off for a few years but never posted much. I had my interview with MCG yesterday and it was quite the stress-free experience. During our lunch with the deans of admissions someone asked about the timeline we could expect for acceptances/rejections, and we were told MCG hopes to have all of their letters out by mid April. The committee itself will be meeting *at least* 4 times this month and next month (so once weekly) to make decisions. Hope this helps a little 🙂

Yeah, we always need more faces around here 🙂

Thanks for the info, hopefully we'll hear something soon, and good luck :luck:

HI! Heh... I wasn't prepared for that welcome, so thanks!

MCG was the first place I've interviewed (this is my first time applying as well), and needless to say I was beyond nervous for about a week before arriving. I am fortunate, though, to have friends from UGA who are currently at MCG so I was able to get some juicy inside information from the source. The entire process was pretty laid back--everyone there is super friendly and wants to make it as easy as possible on you.

My first interview was with a faculty member who used to be on the admissions committee, but he was so busy doing things he needed to do that we were only able to talk for about 15 minutes--I walked away feeling like I had left sooo many things out and there would be no way for him to really sell me in his review letter to my adcom. Oh well... I'm sure he will take into account that we were incredibly rushed.

My adcom interview, however, turned out to be more of a conversation than an interview (woo!), and before I knew it we were 50 minutes into it and he wanted to know if I had any questions about the school. It was a FAR better experience than I could have imagined.

I'm not sure how MCG does their admissions (I thought it was a rolling system), but my friend there thinks most people get their answer in mid-march. It did find it strange that 5/10 people there yesterday were from out-of-state.

OOS for MCG probably have really high stats, and after the acceptances went out in jan., they probably all withdrew, so MCG had to interview more. What states were they from?

maybe they just lived outside the state, but still claimed instate residency???

Either way it's good for us. oosers don't compete against us, just eachother for their 5% 👍

I didn't think of this... makes sense especially if the people I saw yesterday were exceptional students. NH, RI, AL, TN, and VA.

I thought about them possibly claiming instate residency, but two were older and were somewhat established outside of GA, and the other three didn't seem to have any ties instate (at least, not that they mentioned in casual conversation). I was quite happy with the situation--like dd128 said they were competing more against each other.

Ha! That's why I'm warning you to be careful about what you say!

Actually, I can't take credit for admissions officers perusing the site. A few years back when I first joined SDN, there was a big scare when actual ADCOM members started trolling. Of course the site is SUPPOSED to be anonymous, but you don't have to be too savvy to figure out who people are...especially at a school like Mercer who might have only 800 apps instead of a school like Emory or MCG with thousands.

I only directed Ms. Putnam to the site to see the good things people were saying, and I gave you guys fair warning that she checks occasionally. But, it is probably a good idea to be careful regardless...you are, after all, competing with each other and while most people on the site are very friendly you can't always tell those who aren't.

A little reminder of elementary school every now and then is quite nice!

To be honest, I don't really know her that well. She seems very nice from when I met her at the my interview. I've gotten a tad jaded though, at most interviews admissions people are the nicest people in the world, but when you try contacting them afterwards they'll either ignore you, give you answers that do not help, or give you the run around. From what I've seen and heard this does not seem to occur at Mercer which ranks them pretty high in my book.

So ms. putnum if you're looking through files and see a green m&m in there, accept him, he really wants to go to your school! 🙂

Does anyone know the exact location of the site in Savannah? I am down in Savannah and thought I might drive by the hospital to take a look, but I have no idea where the School of Medicine is located. Thanks for the help.

Here's a big fat link.

The med school hasn't really moved in yet. Their offices are currently in the research building that is across from the ER. If you have interviewed with mercer, you can get a guided tour by the dean of admissions. I took one, and it was nice.

the school is going to be right next to the hospital, if I didn't make that clear.

Information about the admission committee and some dates are discussed in this article.

Interesting read.

So according to article, 112 seats left for regular admission.

So according to article, 129 seats left for regular admission.

112, I believe. It said 78 edp for the 190 class. So if there's around 352 (taking out the 78) interviewed applicants left for the remaining 112 spots by the end of the season that gives you around a 30% chance of acceptance. Feel free to check my math, I just pounded that out 🙂

Here's the way I see it, which is probably wrong. They said there are 171 EDP applications, but neglect to say how many are interviewed, so I'm assuming all just for the hell of it. The real number would obviously be higher than 78 (100% acceptance rate) and lower than 171 (45% acceptance rate), but this way gives us regular applicants a more optimistic outlook.

430 interviews for 190 spots
-171 EDP interviews
-259 regular interviews

171 EDP applicants yielded 78 acceptances. The remaining 93 might get accepted later in the cycle, waitlisted, or rejected, but we'll ignore them for now.

That would mean there are 259 regular applicant interviews for the remaining 112 seats. You might appreciate that gives us >40% chance of getting accepted after the interview.

The leftover 93 EDP and 147 regular applicants get narrowed down to the alternate list.

The article is new and has latest info on admission status.
If MCG can post this info on website, why are they reluctant/hesistant to reveal it during interview when asked about how many students were admitted EDP for fall'08?

yeah i'm curious as to why they omit that information. i think that link was the first time i saw the actual number of interviewees.

Yeah I thought it was weird how they didn't really answer your question during lunch. But for the UGA/MCG information dinner last semester they told us.

From what I understand the edp people who don't get accepted go into the regular pool of applicants. Now I'm not sure what kind of chances they stand, but I don't think they are banished straight to the alternate list without at least being considered in comparison to the rest of us. Though I do like your odds better 🙂

I don't know the facts but my 2 cents.

what changes can one make in short duration to be considered along with regular pool after being rejected from early decision?

From what I've heard, one've to apply again thru AMCAS for reg. pool.

Waitlisted after interview-- possible. In case, they don't get good candidates for reg. pool.

well i gathered that when you get deferred from the EDP pool, you're automatically grouped with the rest of the regular decision applicants, and you're treated like one for the remainder of the process. so you can take your chances with that, or apply to other schools ala AMCAS, but you're at the disadvantage of being a late applicant since you get your EDP decision in October.

Anyone know if Mercer is still reviewing every other week? Or have they bumped to every Wednesday yet?

I have an idea that my name hasn't come up for review yet and I am trying to figure out when that will be (suspect I've been 'tabled').

I applied EDP and was rolled over to reg. admissions this year. I took the September 9th MCAT, so I assume they rolled me over b/c they didn't get my new scores back in time. So when I applied EDP, I knew I would not get in, but I did it to make a statement to the ADCOM that I was serious about MCG. And after I raised my MCAT to a 33, they granted me an interview about 3 weeks ago.

So you don't have to reapply for the reg. pool.

congrats on your great score & interview! So that means you weren't interviewed for EDP? I hope the lateness of your interview doesn't hurt your chances, it sounds like if you had the 33 when you applied you might have interviewed earlier.

I defintley did not interview EDP. My score from the previous time I took the MCAT was pretty bad. I guess I should have been more clear, I actually interviewed three weeks ago, so I don't think I am too late. I'm hoping to hear something back soon, they take forever to get back to you.

I just got an interview for mercer next week!

Oh yeah, you are fine then. I thought you meant you got a call to come interview 3 wks ago.

Edit- that still isn't very clear, is it/?

So I'm kind of wondering did the mercer adcom meet last week and none of us heard anything, or did they not meet? Anyone happen to get any info when they spoke with ms. putnam?

I interviewed with Mercer recently and was told they will be calling people on February 20th. Hope this helps.

What week did you interview?

I heard they are still working on the top tier candidates. While it isn't early, it isn't late in the process either. I know that my 'case for admissions' hasn't even been brought up yet. I imagine there is a lot of movement between the every-other-week-meetings, and part of the task the admissions committee must deal w/ is accepting, ranking other candidates, and all the while people withdraw.

Who knows how many they get through per interview cycle or how far 'behind' they are, but I'm sure it's a lot of work. If there are 20 people to be reviewed per meeting (and my sense there is closer to 30), that means most people aren't going to get reviewed right after their interviews.

FutureMDGirl, did you get a sense of where they were? In example, when I interviewed in late Jan., Ms. Putnam stressed that most of us probably wouldn't hear on the 6th. That being said, I know of one person in the 'cycle' that got in.

Well that's a wednesday so I guess that goes along with our wednesday adcom meeting theories. Good luck 👍

Thanks! I will be glued to my phone on that day then. I'm sure that means I'll get calls from every other person but Mercer. I only seem to get good news when I'm not expecting it. hmm.

I interviewed February 7th. I don't recall Ms. Putnam stressing that most of us would not be hearing on the 20th, but then again I was nervous in the morning a could've missed this part. She said if we were accepted we'd get a call and if we didn't receive a call to not worry because it didn't mean we were rejected. If we don't receive a call we might be waitlisted or put on hold. Hope this helps!

I was thinking of writing MCG a love letter of Intent...thoughts?

Sounds great, but I would leave out the lipstick kiss and perfume. Think long and hard about the glitter, too. You want to look professional.
