I just figured this thread needed some comic relief. Yea......I'm no Mitch Hedberg.

Yeah, we're awfully dire on here aren't we....

Bring on the jokes 👍

Everyone says they wait for fin aid packages. What does that mean?? Are they talking about loans, or scholarships? Have any of you submitted fasfa? I started a thread about it, but I still don't really understand the timeline for submission.

From what I understand schools will offer scholarships and stuff later after acceptances to extremely competitive candidates, urms, and stuff. I don't think there is a specific timeline, it's just up to schools how and when they want to do it. You can go look for scholarships on your own as well. Websites like fastweb and stuff supposedly have them for med school. I found some for undergrad scholarships from there and have heard others have as well. I haven't gotten motivated to do a fafasa this year yet, you have lots of time for that though.

When Mercer called me to accept me, the guy that interviewed me called me as he was walking out of the admissions meeting. He said he dialed my number and hit send before he was out of the room.

Good luck to you all, hopefully you'll get in

ha ha. I heard about a real hotline set up at an OBGYN clinic after hours. The recording tells you to press 1 if you are having a baby. Then it plays a recording of someone breathing out over and over. After a few minutes it asks, "Did you have your baby yet?" I guess it keeps looping till you do.

I really enjoyed my interview at Mercer. Have you read the interview feedbacks on the school here at SDN? that pretty much describes everyone's experiences.

People were very friendly and nice; the only stressful part of the day was figuring how to get to the different interviews (I'm terrible w/ directions).

Good luck, I'm sure it will go well and that you'll enjoy it!

The interview process was pretty laid back. However, my first interview was a little weird. I think it was because he would ask me a question, I would answer it, and then he would look at the wall for like a couple minutes, and then I would kind of just sit there in silence. But the second interview with the adcom member went a lot better and he told me at the end that I would probably get in as long as my numbers were good. Overall I really liked mercer.

Congrats on a good interview. Did they give you any indication as to when you would be hearing back?

So did anyone at all get a call from Mercer today? What's going on?

None here, wish they could give us some idea.

He said it would probably take like 6 weeks.

I thought I would post this just for some encouragement. A friend of mine received an interview to MCG on Wed, so they are definitely still handing them out!

He said it would probably take like 6 weeks.

So no meetings on the beginning of march then???? According to the every two week schedule, there will be only two more meeting.

Every acceptance letter will be handed before April, right?

I bet they're still meeting every two weeks, it just takes a while to evaluate all the interviewees.

Hey guys! New poster here. Just wanted yall to know that you're not alone in this waiting game. I interviewed at Mercer and MCG back in December and haven't heard back yet. I know someone who interviewed the same day as me at MCG and has already gotten in 🙁 Startin to believe that this silence is gonna turn into a rejection (or 2)..or waitlists at best! Does anyone know if MCG straight up rejects people after an interview?

We're on page two...weak...real weak gents...

I guess he was really pulling for you, huh?? lol.

I'm not saying that, I'm just saying I don't think they wait a day or two after the meeting before they call you. My guy didn't at least. I'm nobody special, especially on SDN, but I just don't see why they'd accept you, then wait a few days prior to calling.

Doesn't make any sense.

My interview at MCG went yesterday. It was really cool, and very laid back. I had two good interviewers. The second guy used to teach at Harvard Medical School.

haha, I'm sure you're special 👍

It's probably up to your adcom memeber to call you or not. They may be busy and get around to it later. Who knows what those crazy guys do over there anyway.

Not my fault, I've been sick. Do doctors still see patients when they have a cold or something? Just wondering.

I would think so. You probably just have to be careful about washing your hands and not coughing on anyone 😛

Do you have unlimited internet access with that blueberry thing of yours? How much does it cost? Do you usually post from it? (I'm not even sure that it was you, now that I think about it.)

haha, yeah it's me (blackberry?) I didn't get the unlimited internet service access, because I don't download that much stuff, I post from it a fair amount of the time. I really like it because I get my email forwarded directly to it. I added it to my already existing service, but with phone service, texting, and the package runs around 60 a month I think...

I decided when I was going to mention the blackberry I would change the color to match the word. But I don't think many people would notice my changing anything to black. So I wrote blueberry instead.

That's not bad, considering back in the day I paid ~100 for two crappy cell phones.

I have firsthand experience. My interview was on December 6, the meeting was on December 12, and I was accepted on December 13.

There have been applicants taken after classes have started due to illness or lack of funds or some other problem.

Remember that the average age of the medical students at MCG is 27 years old. Many tried more than once to get in.

4 years ago my daughter was accepted at MCG in March. I remember the excitement she had as we did as parents. When your child works hard and does well you want everything for them. Usually, a medical student has been so successful that disappointment of not being selected has never happened. My daughter received several rejections and they shook her confidence, but as good as most of you are, I expect you will be in medical school soon. Letters of acceptance are still being handed out.

I wish you all luck and don't stop trying if it is what you really want.

yes, but I have heard that this is mainly because of the occasional 35-45 year olds, and not a preponderance of 27-28 year olds.

Thanks for your kind words!!! It really means a lot to many of us who are waiting. The tricky thing is that I don't know when I should start preparing for the next year's cycle. IS anybody doing that???

I've just started studying for the mcat, should the need arise. It's tough when you've had some interviews and waitlists, but I'd rather at least be ready when next year comes along.

I interviewed at MCG this past friday. It was super laid back. I remember someone there saying that the latest people hear is by mid April.

That takes serious guts/maturity. Congrats, I wouldn't be able to do it.

haha, yeah I guess, though I really don't want to do it 😛 I actually just started the other day, I took a practice test to see where I stand as it's been like 2 years since I took the thing...and it was on paper so it's a pretty big transition. I may take a kaplan online course, but I'm not too sure yet. For now I'm just doing examkracker stuff and I'll take it from there.

my sister is doing examcrackers right now. she really likes it- most people say it is just as good/maybe better for VR. it feels really weird helping her with mcat stuff, especially since I never really expected her to do it, and I just finished up less than a year ago.
Good luck.

What is the last date that people can hold multiple acceptances?

May 15, if you want your deposits back. Otherwise, you can keep them until you decide/get accepted off a waitlist.

Does anyone know the latest status of MCG in Athens? It keeps changing from what I am reading, and I really want to know if they will start students fall of 2009? When will they let those of us applying this coming cycle know for sure if we are able to apply for a chance to be in Athens?

The person who interviewed me is somewhat involved with the Athens campus, and she said that it will be 2010 most likely.

say we were accepted for Augusta then - if we wanted to do a Md/MPH would they let us transfer to Athens for that and finish out there once the campus was open? What else are they saying about that?

We didn't go too deep into the new campus talk so I am not sure.

We didn't go too deep into the new campus talk so I am not sure.

Right now they are renovating a building near campus to start a class of 2009 or 2010 until they can move to the Navy Corp school campus in 2011. Here's an article from the Red and Black (UGA newspaper) that explains:

New facility to aid in medical program start-up

NEWS NOTEBOOK

Issue date: 2/7/08 Section: News

The University's Real Estate Foundation purchased Tuesday the Athens Factory, also known as the O'Malleys building, to renovate it into a medical teaching facility.

The foundation closed Tuesday on the 36,845-square-foot building and approximately five acres on Williams Street at the North Oconee River. It cost nearly $7.3 million.

The Real Estate Foundation will renovate the facility and lease it to the University to house the first class of medical students under the Medical College of Georgia and the University's medical education initiative. This initial class of students is slated to enter as early as fall 2009 and no later than fall 2010.

A report presented to the University System of Georgia Board of Regents last month by Tripp-Umbach consultants regarding the need for expanded medical education in Georgia stated that an initial facility is required for start-up of the medical teaching program in Athens. The University cannot occupy the Navy Supply Corps School property until the federal government vacates it in approximately 2011.

At that time, the University will use the Navy School property as a new University health sciences campus, which will include the MCG/University medical education initiative program.

So does that mean it's just going to be an offshoot of mcg? Like savannah for mercer. There had been rumors a while back that it was going to be a completely separate med school.

Hi, I've been lurking for sometime, and I wish all my fellow GA residents well. I received an interview invite for MCG today for March 4th. I am trying to decide what to do. I have been accepted for Mercer, with Savannah campus position confirmed. I am in my 30s, have children and a home and live in Savannah, so it would be nice to not relocate. However, MCG's tuition is a definite incentive, considering the difference in loans I'll have to take. I really enjoyed my interview with Mercer. I'm grateful for the MCG interview, and I guess I'll go. I think the pass/fail for Mercer is a big draw for me. I'm just not sure if the money difference is enough to relocate. Any thoughts?

Congrats on the accepance to mercer, you're in a position many of us would like to be 👍 I'd definitely go the mcg interview, to at least keep your options open.

This kind of decision I think most of us would take for granted as we only have ourselves to worry about. I guess I'd try to decide if uprooting your family is worth the 70 or so grand difference. In the end you're going to be paying back loans, and I'm not real sure what kind of difference we're talking for monthly payments, I'm guessing maybe a few hundred dollars a month depending on how you finance. (I'm not a financial aid expert mind you, so don't take me as one. You could call the schools to get a better idea 🙂)You're in med school for four years and you should go where you think you'll be happiest. The emotional toll of having you and your family be some place you don't like could be pretty high if you end up in the wrong place. Good luck on your interview :luck:

ACCEPTANCE NEWS MOST WELCOMED
Especially from those who interviewed late jan. and early feb.

Don't be discouraged, guys. You still have several months left. (That is both a blessing and a curse, I am sure.) From what I understand, most everyone holds multiple acceptances until mid-March, then the WL starts moving faster.

Side-note- are there any lurkers/posters out there who would be interested in an MCG class thread? I check over there about once a week, and I am thinking about starting a thread and email-subscribing to it, but I have a feeling there just aren't any ppl out there.

i interviewed late jan at mcg, and it's getting to be about that time that i check mail more eagerly.
(today was the one month mark)

if i don't get anything good by the end of this week, it's back to the old drawing board...

Hey everyone. So if there is one thing that I have noticed with this thread, it's that Mercer and MCG is on everyone's mind. BUT, for those of you curious about Emory, I spoke with Erica Black, the Associate Director of Admissions, this evening. Sad to say, but Emory will be holding its last interviews this Friday. Big bummer for those of us who haven't heard back at all.

As for MCG, I am aware of many people that have interviewed back in 2007 (November for me) that still haven't heard word, so for those of you eager to hear back from your Jan/Feb interviews, the wait may be awhile. Having called MCG recently, they will send out final decisions by early-mid April.

So 1 month and some change to go. Good luck everyone!

I would go as well. If you go and MCG doesn't change your opinion, then you'll always know that you made the most informed decision.

Congrats

When did you interview/find out about Mercer?

I hate to be blunt, but you are interviewing for a waitlist spot. That said, your performance in the interview will likely determine where on the waitlist you will be. If you are comfortable with that then I would go.

i'm interviewing at MCG tomorrow. wish me luck 😀

I would be interested in this thread (and I know some of my friends who were accepted would at least read it and hopefully start posting!).

On another note, I withdrew my Mercer acceptances a few days ago, and I know someone who will be doing the same soon. It broke my heart to because I absolutely loved the atmosphere, students, faculty - everything! But I'm also excited to be going to MCG next year.
I hope all those waiting hear back soon. I withdrew as soon as possible to try to open up spots because I know how much it sucks to wait!
and good luck babykawaii!! it is a relaxed interview day!
