I am entering my senior year at University of Florida. I have always wanted to go into healthcare and went pre-nursing, pre-med, and now I'm pre-PA. I chose the PA route because it was shorter and I liked the idea of being able to switch specialties. The motivation behind that was that I wanted to start working earlier to make money and put my younger siblings in college. I was interested in many fields of medicine after shadowing multiple PAs. The problem is that I never stopped considering the MD or DO route. Every now and then, I would look at my options and see if I can do it.

My grades are terrible and it was due to depression, which I am getting treated for. That plays a role into why I don't think I would be accepted into a medical school. However PA schools are competitive too and the program I would want to enter requires 2,000 hours of patient care. So my plans of getting into a PA program so I could work earlier are shot--I might have to take a couple of years off to work and take classes at a community college to boost my science GPA (the program I'm applying to doesn't care where my prereqs are from). And after seeing the different fields of medicine, which I thought I would want to switch between dermatology and surgery in my future, I found surgery to be boring and want to go into dermatology later on.

I figure if I have to take time off anyway, why not do a post bac program?

I'm feeling a bit panicked as I'm almost done with my undergrad and I'm starting to change my mind and am so confused. Any advice would be appreciated!

I would worry about getting into medical school first before i worry about deciding between derm or surgery.

Your knowledge of PAs is overwhelming.

That was just to explain why I am questioning whether I want to do PA or medical school.

How does any of this matter? It looks like the real question needs to be CAN you actually go to medical school or PA school?

Also, switching derm (hardest specialty to get into in Florida) to surgery would be ridiculous...

Let's not put the cart before the horse here
