I'd just like to point out something very obvious that hadn't been mentioned in the 'gays in medicine part I' thread. Many people were making a deal about how gays may face discrimination in their applications for being open about their sexuality. Well, I can understand that most of you aren't in medschool yet and don't really know what you're talking about. Let me inform you about the present reality. Most medschool first year classes have one or two (token perhaps) openly gay kids in them. Medical schools like to be very PC and are now struggling to recruit the top gay candidates, just like they do with other minorities. In fact, one of the top 20 med schools (actually known for being a conservative institution) has an openly gay Dean of students who admits to looking in the addmission pool for qualified gay candidates. Far from being a "dissadvantage", being openly gay gives candidates an edge over their straight colleages when it comes to getting into a medschool. So if you're going to debate the issue, at least do so in a contemporary context.

AA at its finest. :barf:

*rubs forehead* oooohhhhmmmm... I predict... I predict a series of bigoted replies, followed by a flame war, followed by the closing of this thread, followed by another hurricane on the southeast coast...

Maybe we could start naming the threads in alphabetical order. What is this, Gay Thread Marvin?
This one's special though, because it has combined the AA Debate with the Gay Debate
OMG
The PERFECT Thread! Take cover!

(In a deep, undersea lab, I am genetically engineering the Mother of All Threads: Is the Liberal Media Conspiring to Send Gay Hispanic Black Jews to Medical School?)

EDIT: OP ... statistically, every class should have gay med students. They're not tokens, they're just students. Gay students. Get over it. Jeez.

Every time I see this thread pop to the top, I think of Maya Rudolph on SNL...

GAYS IN SPACE!!!!

gay threads are so last week.

So if I'm 3/32 gay, does that mean I can claim gay minority status? 😉

this thread should be stickied, its hilarious

maybe there should be a new sub-forum in pre-allo for all the gay threads, theyre used to discrimination anyways 😉

 I agree

You gotta be kidding me. If they reserved seats for homosexuals you can bet your pink cotton panties that there will suddenly be a HUGE surge in the number of "homosexuals" with premed status. Seriously, I'll kiss a dude if it means I can get in. 😀

In a throwback to way back when...the real question is if you'd eat a poop hotdog while kissing a dude?

e. coli ... not sexy.

wait! wait! I know ... post a picture of yourself and we'll tell you if you're gay enough for medical school!

EDIT: bonus point - we'll tell you if we'd kiss you to get into medical school.

:horns:

I can't believe how much pre-meds make of the gay issue. I go to med school in one of the reddest of red states in the country, and the gay thing even here is so not an issue for anyone with a brain. You will not be discriminated against, but you will not get any special favors either. Anyone who wishes for either is weak and not fit to be in med school.

My best friend is gay and never, ever makes an issue of her sexuality, nor anyone else's. You know why? She's above such base concerns. She has CLASS. Something a few posters here could learn about.

Nope. Log Cabin Republicans of California. We're a small, but well known tribe because of our uncanny ability to irk people at all points of the political spectrum. 😉

Okay this sounds a little fishy to me. So how do they actually check if your gay or not to consider you a minority?. Would you have to prove it? (this is referring to you saying that "they are struggling to recruit the top gay candidates" )

my school just elected a gay couple as homecoming kings. kickass! i hope we can finally have more acceptance of gays in mainstream society. plus they are so pretty to look at... 🙁 stop scapegoating people and chill out, to think that ppl are bieng chosen for medical school just b/c they are gay is totally crazy.

I wonder if this group shares office space with the Fundamentalist Islamic Coalition in Support of Israel.

Hmm. As one of these "token" out students you refer to, I would beg to differ. This was definitely not the case during my admissions process, and I applied to schools in very "liberal" areas. I know plenty of GLBT people who have been open or not out during their application process, and none have mentioned anything like this happening. I would argue we ended up at schools that correlated well with the strengths and weaknesses of our applications. I know out people at range of schools. It's not like being out gives someone a ticket to a top tier school. The people I do know at "top" schools had a very competitive package, with scores, experiences, etc, all being a part of it and their sexuality, if it was even in their application in some way, not being a big part of it at all. If this is how it "really" is for those of us in medical school, I would be curious to have some more info about this phenomenon you describe. Thanks.
