I'd just like to point out something very obvious that hadn't been mentioned in the 'gays in medicine part I' thread. Many people were making a deal about how gays may face discrimination in their applications for being open about their sexuality. Well, I can understand that most of you aren't in medschool yet and don't really know what you're talking about. Let me inform you about the present reality. Most medschool first year classes have one or two (token perhaps) openly gay kids in them. Medical schools like to be very PC and are now struggling to recruit the top gay candidates, just like they do with other minorities. In fact, one of the top 20 med schools (actually known for being a conservative institution) has an openly gay Dean of students who admits to looking in the addmission pool for qualified gay candidates. Far from being a "dissadvantage", being openly gay gives candidates an edge over their straight colleages when it comes to getting into a medschool. So if you're going to debate the issue, at least do so in a contemporary context.
