Which reaction will not proceed?

a. Li + CuCl2 ->
b. Zn + NaNO3 ->
c. CaCO3 + HCL ->
d. K + H2O ->
e. H+ + OH- ->

how do you decide whether it will proceed or not?

Please explain to me if u know.
Thank you.

Yeah the answer is B. Its because Zn is lower on teh activity series and would not be able to push sodium out. Even if it could Sodium would just kick Zn out again.

I never ran across something similar with Kaplan's subject test or destroyer.

I don't believe they would test us on something like this. There's no generalized rule for it. every ochem and gchem question I've seen there's some generalized rule to them.

yes the answer is B. its from Kaplan subject. I wish we don't have to memorize this.
Thank you very much.

Maybe I skipped it or haven't come across it yet.

Honestly I would skip it if you don't know or better yet take an educated guess.

You can easily eliminate c,d,e.

By just knowing that Alkali and alkaline earth metals are very reactive in water. which has Hydrogen ions. I'm sure in chem your lab teacher probably did some demo show you what happens you put sodium in water.

That will take care of C and D. E is just plain obvious.

So you're left with A and B. a 50% chance is much better than a wild guess.
