Quick question: is it fine to take GE courses at my local CC instead of my 4 year university?

I'm planning on taking only one quarter of English at my CC this summer and the other two at my 4 year institution because it's a pre-requisite, but what if I take the rest of my GE's at a CC over the years. Will it look bad?

I think I have 3 more courses to take because I have already taken a few courses at a community college in high school. I know pre-requisites are looked down upon if taken at a CCC but how about a GE course or GE courses.

I plan to take upper division science classes and all that jazz at my institution (University of Cali).

Thanks for the help!

I did this, but mainly because I had to get my grades up before a four year university would take me, so I ended up taking them at a CC first. I wouldn't think taking just the gen. ed. courses at a CC would be horrible, but I know that taking the pre-med courses at CC is bad.

Even if you take pre-med courses at your community college, they won't be seen negatively if you prove you do well on upper division science at the 4 year level.

If I were you, I'd save my money by going to community college. It makes no sense wasting your cash on a 4 year. You might also end up at a better 4 year, and if you graduate with a high GPA from the 4 year, it doesn't matter where you did your first 2 years. Anyone that says the contrary is being an elitist.

Come on, why take your GEs at a CC? Take them at your uni, they will be the nice relief from your pre-reqs and they are the funner classes.

@Triage I'm staying at my 4 yr. It's a good school and has lots of opportunities.

@Shritzo: I only have 3 courses or so left and I'll be knocking one off this summer - economics. I guess it will be a relief from pre med courses but it seems so much better to do it at a CC because it saves a lot of money and is easier.

Then I must be an elitist, because I think the plan you suggest is focusing on the financial and numerical aspects of getting into medical school far too much. The CC is going to have fewer extracurricular opportunities than at the 4 year school. In addition, you'd be sacrificing two years of the college experience by going to a CC.

So it's fine to take GEs at CC right?

Someone please answer this one: How much will my application be negatively impacted by taking one quarter of English, one-third of the English requirement for medical School, at a community college?

It is a pre-requisite ... so I am a bit worried. 🙁

I guess it depends. I took an English gen. ed. at CC, and I'm taking the next phase of it at uni. However, I'm an English major, so it's sorta required, lol. Your major might require you (at uni) to take English, and then you'd be covered.

I'm planning on taking two other English courses at my 4 year. Most likely English 1B and a Literature course.

I hope that this one course won't be too detrimental or even better not at all. 😀
