Ok, I have ran into a few gen chem problems that I am struggling to grasp 100%.

1) Which species has a ground state with this electron arrangement?

1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d10

The first thing I did was count and I ended up with 28. I was able to narrow the answers down to either Ni or Zn2+. Knowing that the ground state is the lowest energy state please help me to know why I should pick Zn2+ and not Ni.

Do yoiu see 4s2? if you chose Ni you must have it in your electron arrangement.
in addition remember 4s fills up before 3d.
