i have encountered in several different problems from different sources where they ask "what is the best equipment to measure this..."

choices usually include beaker, pipet, buret, erlenmeyer flask, graduated cylinder, etc.

i haven't encountered this information in my study materials so i was wondering if someone could help me differentiate among all these instruments

thanks!!

Is this a serious question? have you not taken a chemistry or a science course? these are pretty basic items. Even if you're not from the US i would be surprise if never used them at all and you're working on the DAT.

Plus your are unlikely to see such a question anyhow on DAT. It is open ended and debatable. "best" varies. If given infinite time and asked to get 100 milliliters of a solution, you can bet someone would be willing to use a micropipette to get such an amount while others might use a regular pipet or even a graduated cylinder.

So here you go

A pipet is used to measure liquids with great accuracy. you can even measure down to microliters if you want.

burets are typically used for titration. they provide good accuracy. You can control to the point of drop by drop.

Graduated cylinders measures with only moderate accuracy.

erlenmeyer and regular beakers their measurements are pretty poor but great for getting large amounts of a solution. they are more commonly used for baths or as vessels for whatever experiment you're using.
