Hi Everyone.

Thought i'd had better luck getting a response over here as opposed to pre-allo.

I am interested in taking a gen chem over the summer, I prefer an accelerated course, or one that allows me to take gen chem 1 and gen chem 2 in the summer, so I can take o chem 1 in the fall.

I live in the bay area. Anyone know of any programs?

If not that how about any schools in the bay area that offer o chem 1 in the spring?

I look forward to hearing from you all.

Thanks!

try stanford.

I think i looked at stanford and didn't see any accelerated programs.

 I did however find one at Harvard, which with tuition and housing came to a whopping 8k :scared: how can i afford that!

Yup that's right, Harvard summer school chem 1&2 over the summer is $4000 just for tuition. Housing with a sublet will cost you about $500/mo. So ya, your numers are more or less right. If you're willing to relo to Boston I think you can take the sequence at UMass Boston for about half the Harvard cost. The UMB Summer schedule isn't out yet, but I think they offer the sequence.

Good luck,

Hi,

Just wanted to let you know the UMB schedule is out now.

Although, they have yet to post the cost of the courses. 😡 (This is frustrating, I'm trying to make up a budget and get my loans in order for the summer). You could also try Northeastern. Their schedule isn't out yet for 05 but in 04 they had chem 1 and chem 2 offered over the summer. And Northeastern's summer tuition is a lot cheaper than Harvard, judging from last years rates, around 1k a class. I saw on ratemyprofessors.com though that the guy who's teaching chem 1 and 2 at Harvard, Jim Davis, has super high ratings. At least it looks like you're getting what you pay for.

:luck: Good Luck. I'm in the same boat here.

Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ offers a 5 week Chem I in June / July and a 5 week Chem II in July / August. The Undergraduate Tuition is $448.00 per semester hour for non-residents.

We can get college loans just for the summer to go to a program at Northeastern, Harvard of the such?

If that is true, please tell me how!

Thanks for the info, i'll take a look when I get home, i'm currently typing from school. (It's a shame that I'm so addicted to this site that I check at school when I could be doing homework)

Sure, although they are private loans, not government loans.
A lot of people I know use the citiassist loan from citibank.
Check out this site:

There's also TERI loans

http://www.teri.org/main.html

and Signature Loans from Sallie Mae

http://www.salliemae.com/apply/borrowing/signature.html

I'm probably going to use TERI's continuing education loan for my summer school classes and use the citiassist loan for classes in the fall.

Virtually every school with 2 summer sessions offers gen chem 1 and gen chem 2 in California!!

Though I see you are intent on going to a university, don't discount the community college option. It won't look bad as long as you pull A's in both classes. If you don't, you might be in some trouble... but its worth the risk in my opinion.... you would end up paying less, staying close to home, and getting the grades you want because its usually easier than university.

My goal is an accelerated 8 week - 12 week course that covers a whole year of chem in that short summer session. Community colleges don't offer that and I have not found any california schools that offer those accelerated courses.

I have nothing against community colleges.

If you're willing to travel south over the summer, I know Cal State Long Beach and Cal State Northridge offer Gen Chem over a period of 12 weeks. I took Gen Chem II at Long Beach State so I could start with O-Chem at UCLA Extension in the fall.

Otherwise, I'm positive that UC Berkeley, San Jose State and San Francisco State all offer O-Chem I in the spring. All three have Open University/Concurrent Enrollment programs, so you can take the class without applying for formal admission.

Northeastern's school of professional studies is still on the trimester system...beware! There are not 2, but 3 orgo courses. Don't screw yourself over like I did.
