On DAT bootcamp, there's a question asking which would better measure 8.7mL of a liquid and I was stuck between a pipet and a buret. I chose buret but the answer was pipet.

On the 2009 ADA DAT, Q 62 asks a similar question except with 12.52mL, and again I was stuck between a buret and a pipet. This time I went with my previous mistake on bootcamp and chose pipet. Turns out the answer this time was buret...

Any insight on which on is actually right? I'm pretty conflicted and this question (or similar) has showed up at least once on each practice test I've done.

I think the difference is the application, for example if it's for a titration where even a small mistake would ruin the whole experiment you would use a buret.
But measuring some amount of water to transfer it to transfer it from one beaker to another where you have a larger room for error you would probably use a pipet as it's quicker.

I think the pipet is preferred to measure anything less than 10 ml (more accurate). the buret is used to measure anything between 10 and 50 ml.

For these kind of volumes you can use pipet or a buret.
Generally if you are doing a titration, you can use a buret to deliver volumes of 10-50ml.
Pipet can deliver more accurate smaller volumes if you are pipetting in microliters.

Hope this helps
