What exactly makes a biology course 'general' biology?

I don't know if any of these classes qualify as general bio:

BIOL 200 Principles of Organismal and Population Biology
BIOL 201 Principles of Cell and Molecular Biology
BIOL 300 Cell Biology (4)
BIOL 301 Microbiology
BIOL 302 Genetics (4)
BIOL 303 Evolutionary Biology (3)
BIOL 310 Animal Biology and Ecology
BIOL 304 Comparative Animal Physiology (3)
BIOL 400 Molecular Biology (4)
BIOL 424 Human Physiology (3)

Were your general bio classes lower division? What content did they cover?

I asked USC which course at my university was equivalent to their general bio requirement and they said Anatomy. Yet many other schools specify that course separate from general biology.

"General" generally involves a course that goes through a survey of the bulk of the topics covered in the major. Some schools have different philosophies so it's best to contact the school for critical distinctions as you don't want to have missing prereqs because you assumed that your class fit the criteria.

From my experience, the first three classes on your list could, but not necessarily qualify. The rest of the courses are not really general but they may fulfill a biology requirement.

Does anyone know what would the minimum number of community service hours recommended for anyone planning to apply to pharmacy school (regardless of their good GPA and PCAT scores? Response greatly appreciated.

Who knows what the minimum is. Some schools require and some don't. Your best bet would be to ask the admissions office of the school your applying to.

Yeah, I want to know about community service too 🙄

does your school have 100 level classes? those are usually the general bio classes.

Yes, but they are designed for non-science majors. If I take it I don't even get any credit for it since I'm a biology major.

Didn't you take some general/intro bio for your major? Those classes would fulfill the requirement.

As far as volunteering, most schools have no requirement. I know one school that requires at least six months. Something you did around that time frame would seem adequate to me to prove involvement. I don't think most schools would give you an answer on that question.

At my school the general biology class for people majoring in the life sciences is cell and molecular biology/evolution. It's jointly taught by the plant biology, zoology, and microbiology departments.
