What are some of the most general interview questions that are likely to pop up during the interview? I would like to start preparing for it for my next year's application and in the case I get granted for one,

Thanks a bunch guys

FYI - I'm planning on applying NECO, MCPHS, SCO and UAB

I can answer for UAB interview questions lol. They have 2 types of interviews: closed file and open file. The closed file is the interviewer wanting to know more about you (the first question is the "So tell me about you?" question), and the open file is more on your transcripts, GPA, etc. That part is where you explain any hiccups they might wonder about. For the other 3 schools listed, I don't know how they work lol

I didn't apply to UAB but I can answer for the other 3!

NECO
- My interview was really laid back and conversation style. It was 1 on 1 open file and the interviewer took some notes as you answered questions, especially if they really liked your answer. They asked things like how I became involved in optometry, personal study habits, "with your experience what's an awkward optometry related scenario you were in and how did you handle it?", "was there anything you saw being around optometrists that you do not wish to emulate?", "what do you like most about optometry?", about future plans/goals, and "what are your hobbies/things you do in your spare time?". The interviewer liked hearing questions and was eager to share tons of information about NECO and what they offer. They didn't ask me about grades or OAT.

SCO - Extremely similar to NECO. Very laid back and interviewer also took notes. Pretty much the same questions and everything as listed above, and also did not ask me about grades or OAT either. They also asked a lot about extracurriculars, what was your favorite class in undergrad, about how you would handle a difficult employee that you would supervise, what do you like about optometry and what is a fear you have about becoming an optometrist. The main difference from the NECO interview was that SCO was closed file. The interviewer did not know anything about you. Before the interview the admissions committee stressed that they don't want you to be nervous at all and that the interviewer doesn't know about your grades/background to help facilitate conversation and ease stress.

MCPHS - This was my least favorite interview, tbh. It was very serious and not very conversational. Although I believe it was the interviewer I had because the other one I met who interviewed another student didn't seem as serious and was very bubbly. They asked some of the basics like why do you want to become an optometrist, tell me about your background, how do you think you did on the OAT, etc. The more serious questions were how/why do you see yourself at MCPHS and why did you apply there, how do you handle extreme levels of stress, what I thought about other optometry schools, and ethical questions like "what would you do if a child comes in to your exam room and you suspect are being abused by their parents?". The interviewer had read about my file before it started but didn't bring any paper/notes to write on like the other interviews.

Overall, I think the main way you prepare for the interviews is to just be yourself. Make sure you know your application file in and out, and be prepared to comfortably speak about any questions they might ask about your grades/OAT/extracurriculars. Reflect on optometry and what makes you passionate about the field. Make sure you get a really good nights rest and a small breakfast before you go, as all of these don't serve breakfast except NECO haha. Also come up with some questions that you'd like to ask to both the interviewers and students during your visit, because there will be plenty of time for that and will help you decide if the school is a good fit. 🙂 Hope this helps and best of luck!

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply in a very detailed manner . Do you mind if I ask what your GPA and OAT scores were?

No problem! I was 3.2 overall 3.2 science, 300AA/300TS with a bunch of optom related experience during/after undergrad. Some of the adcom mentioned they liked my personal statement too so I'm sure that will really help if you write about your passion. I had a few friends and relatives review mine before I submitted.
