So, I received the e-mail from Georgetown with the link to their secondary. I don't think they screen but I was surprised by the almost "think twice about applying here because it's tough to get in" tone of their e-mail. Did anybody else get this e-mail?

Yeah, I got the e-mail and I agree with the tone of the letter.

what up guys -

i'm goin' to be a first year in g'town in august. g'town also sent a similar email to me when i was in your shoes and i ended up getting in. its true though that its pretty difficult (because everyone and their mom applies to g'town for whatever reason) and they're really random about selection - i thought my interview was rather poor.

it is however an expensive 2ndary price - $115 and their decisions are so quick. i got my interview after 1 week and some people got rejected after sending in their 2ndary after 3 days! (they cashed the check and sent the letter out it seems)

titoincali - i think you should def throw an app to g'town - your stats are commendable.

if you have any questions, don't be hesitant to shout..

best,
-a

Admissions is probably going through all the proceessed AMCAS applications so it'll take awhile for everyone to get the email. It doesn't mean anything if you didn't get the secondary email today. You'll probably get it tomorrow or next week. Don't worry.

I got mine about half an hour ago (just before 1:00pm PST).

I just got mine.

Don't worry. You'll get it. they can't send it to 8000 people at once. It will probably take a couple of days.

Those of you who have received the email from Georgetown, When was your amcas processed?

Mine was processed earlier this week, do you think I will be waiting a while before I receive an email?

Thanks for any help

For all you guys that received your Georgetown secondaries... Were there any other essay questions besides why Georgetown? Just curious if the application is the same as last years....

Thanks!

My amcas was also verified this week. Like the above posts say, it may take a day or two to get to everyone. No worries.

you'll all get the email.

So pessimistic you are, in expecting a rejection as the first email.

Oh and lmao at the rest of this thread's funny posts.

just got the email about 4:45 cst...it's pretty cool, it's a pdf with embedded text boxes so you can type right onto it...i remember a thread a few days back about people asking how to handle the pdf files, so if more schools would use this type of file, that would be pretty sweet... 😀

They send that e-mail to everyone. I received it last year. If you're a competetive applicant (which I'm betting most of you are), pay no attention to the tactics med schools might use to dissuade you from filling out their secondaries. Georgetown sends out that letter. UCSD makes their secondary a huge pain in the ass: confusing and poorly formatted. UCD makes their secondary very, very long and painful. My guess is that they all want to make sure you're serious about applying to their school.

Oh man I def agree that the impression I got was one of just wanting my $$. I'm so marginal there I was questioning even doing the secondary but then I realize that I applied there and if you start just not doing secondaries right off the bat there then where does that line get drawn you know.

i would really spend some time thinking out and writing this essay if i were you guys. it's really important to georgetown admissions. more so than for other schools, you might want to look over the georgetown site pretty carefully. good luck.

Could you please post the text of the email? Thanks! 😀

Let the battle of wits BEGIN!!!!

I'm just gonna read their site and figure out a little history of Gtown and why i want to send $100+ to it for a less than affordable school. I hate schools that dont screen, makes me wanna fill out the secondary less. But then again, one question, that'll be as easy as it gets.

The Secondary Application information is sent to all applicants for whom our office receives a verified AMCAS Application, to inform them of our general review criteria and admissions process. Your application has not been reviewed at this time. We ask that you consider the following information before submitting the Secondary Application and non-refundable application fee.

The Committee on Admissions carefully reviews all completed applications. At the same time, it must establish academic criteria to reduce the volume of seriously considered applications to a manageable number. The following information is provided to help you judge your competitiveness.

Those invited for interview generally present an average science Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.5 and Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores of 10 for each subtest. Those considered competitive after interview have roughly the same academic credentials, stronger recommendations, and a more positive interview evaluation than those rejected after interview. Those accepted generally present an average science GPA of 3.6 and MCAT scores of 10 for each subtest.

In 2004-2005, the School of Medicine received 7, 943 AMCAS applications. Of the 4,756 completed applications, 1,312 individuals were interviewed to seat a class of 190 students. The Committee on Admissions strives for a diverse representation in the Class and reviews academic credentials, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, participation in health care experiences, and the interview evaluation when making its selections.

Well, that e-mail sucked. I can't decide if it's worth my time to even fill out the secondary and waste $115 since i have a 28Q (11V, 9B, 8P) and a 3.6 sci. GPA (3.7 overall). Doesn't sound like they'll even consider it, regardless of how good my PS is, my letters are, my ECs are, etc. I hate that, I'm sorry but show me the difference between me and a kid with a 30 and a 3.5...what-f*cking-ever.

Anyone else in my boat and what are you guys thinking?

It definitely gave me pause. I only have 3.4 science but 37Q. But then I decided I might at well give it a try. If I didn't I would probably regret it. Plus, I hear they give you an answer pretty quickly. It would be nice to know the outcome for at least one school- even if it's a rejection!

Give it a shot. You never know what may happen.

Don't be discouraged. Georgetown interviews A LOT of people. Plus, none of us can accurately predict who will and who will not get in. The admissions process is so random that you can't limit yourself from the beginning. That e-mail is indicating only general cutoffs. Like the MSAR, it is just being informative on their so-called "standards." Numbers aside, you are all unique individuals with different life experiences and extracurriculars. Make sure to really set yourself apart in your essays and be aggressive with the admissions office. Call them to make sure your application is complete once you've submitted the secondary (complete - fee, secondary, LORs all have reached them).

if you're interested in the school, i think you should go for it. there are certainly people at georgetown med who scored 28 or 29 on the mcat. your gpa is good. georgetown's different than a lot of med schools out there, so if you like what they're about and what they have to offer, write about that in the essay. they'll appreciate it. good luck.

Yeah, maybe I'll give it a shot. I kind of like that almost 1/4 of the people who return secondaries get interviewed. I'll do what you guys said and just research the **** out of the school for the essay.

yea, it's amazing how much you find out about a school when you really research it. I'll admit that I applied to GUSOM because my numbers weren't TOO far off (my gpa's a bit low for everyone, but whatever), but after researching the school, it seems to be a great fit. I think my religious studies background may actually help me out here. Plus, they have 4th year elective rotations that you can do abroad...aka I would get to go back to Kenya!!! 😍

What do yall think about mentioning the Catholic, Jesuit thing in the secondary? I'm a practicing Catholic and love the idea of attending a school with some affiliation. I don't want to sound overly religious or preachy or anything though. If I mention it briefly do you think that would be ok?

i think that would be fine.

i'm also a somewhat religions (not catholic, however) but i dropped a few sentences about it in the essay and i think they admired it (it was brought up during my interview).
