Honestly with those numbers I don't see why do an SMP at all. Just spend a year getting some solid clinical experience (hospital volunteering/shadowing), while working or just relaxing. SMP programs are mainly to prove you can handle med school curriculum despite a low undergrad GPA. Just my 2 cents.

Well the thing about Sinai that appealed to me was that their courses don't mirror med school classes. I'm still not 100% that I won't do an MD/PhD, I may still apply to a few. Sinai would at least keep that a very viable option for me. If I do go to Sinai, I will try to get as much clinical experience as possible, but because GU's SMP is really intense, I don't think I'd have much time to do those things. I realize that doing a MS program might be overkill, but as an academic work-a-holic, the idea of spending even a year not taking classes or working a ton freaks me out a bit.

The schools I applied to last year:
Wisconsin (where I did my undergrad)
Medical College of Wisconsin
U of Chicago
UIC
Columbia
Penn
Yale
Michigan
Minnesota

Before lecturing me about not applying to enough schools and a broader range, I really only wanted to go to UW at the time. I would have opted to wait another year if not accepted there over going somewhere else that wasn't one of the other places I applied to. Whenever I do apply again, it will be to a lot more schools.

Just as an addition to this thread, I didn't hear back from GU until 6 weeks after I got the email saying they were reviewing my application. I called their office a week and a half ago, and the person I talked to said they are at the most busy time of their admissions process. So for anyone who may be worried that they're taking so long, it's because they're really swamped right now not because they don't like your application.

To me it sounds like the Sinai program is a perfect fit for you then. Sinai would allow you to fill those holes in your app so you'd be a solid applicant for when you apply to medical school. The degree conferred by the Georgetown SMP, according to LizzyM on these forums is worthless for anything except for getting into medical school 👎

OMG still waiting to hear back from them!! I got my "application is under review" email May 2nd but I submitted an extra LOR that didn't get to them until May 13.
How much longer do I have to wait!! I'm stressed out checking my email at work to see if I got accepted and then after work I get even more stressed out to see if I got a rejection in the mail! AHH!

I'm also still waiting for a decision. Was under review 4/21. Hopefully we hear soon!

i waited just shy of 7 weeks, so keep you hopes up!

Anybody hear back from the financial aid office? I submitted everything about 2.5 weeks ago. Two waitlists @ medical schools, and I would really like to give up my spot to one of you waitlisters.

Hey all,

Just popping in to say hi and good luck to everyone applying! I'm currently in the SMP (about to finish our LAST EXAMS next week WOOO), so if y'all have any specific questions about classes, faculty, how things are run, or even DC in general, feel free to PM me.

Anybody looking for a roommate? PM me if anyone is interested.

Has anyone been accepted off of the waitlist yet?

What are you looking for for housing? Glover Park? Burleith? Dupont? Anyone looking for roommates? I'm looking with my friend for at least a 2 bedroom that is preferably pet friendly.

I'm looking for something near campus. No preference really. I would like a pet friendly place as well. Would really like to bring my dog.

Accepted! Now I just need to find somewhere to live. Anyone looking for a roommate?

Wow how can you get rejected with those stats? There are plenty of med schools you could get right into.

Are you a member of the Google group? Seems like some current students are posting housing on there. There's also a list for people seeking roommates. Not sure about a Facebook group.

Hey Guys,

I just applied to the smp at Georgetown on 5/13. They haven't reviewed my application yet and according to a admissions rep., they will be looking at this this/next week. He also said that the class is half-full and the dean of admission said he plans on reviewing all applications this month. Oddly enough, he also said im right in the middle of bell curve. I didnt even ask.

My stats are:
B.A. Biology
3.43 Cgpa, 3.31 sGPA
29N MCAT (25M the first time)

I am currently on my year off after graduation and am working as a research associate at an Ivy league Medical Center. I also have 150 hours of clinical experience.

I got into St. George's Medical School(only foreign I even applied to) but rejected to all US Medical Schools. I would really prefer to go to the Georgetown SMP. Do I stand a chance? Is this the right move? Will getting a 3.5 gpa from this program even help me?

I appreciate any input. Thanks

^Your MCAT score is a little below the average for the program but your GPA is good so I'd say you stand a good chance. I would go to Georgetown over the Caribbean as the match rate for Caribbean grads is significantly lower than that of US med schools. See http://www.nrmp.org/data/2010pressrelease.pdf.

FOR THOSE WHO WERE ACCEPTED INTO GEORGETOWN THIS YEAR: What was your GPA and MCAT? Thanks!

Even if I do get itno this program and do well (i.e. 3.6, 3.7, 3.8 gpa) will I still have to retake the MCAT to get into a US MD? Will 1 semester of grades from georgetown SMP be good enough?

my understanding is that doing well helps obscure less than impressive undergrad GPA, but won't do much to hide an MCAT score.

Does anyone have a list of textbooks for this program?

I think we can find them based on last year's syllabi on the Georgetown website, but the program coordinator advises that we wait until orientation to buy books, where last year's students will let us know what we will actually use.

I know what it's like to be on a waitlist so I just wanted to let you know I will be giving up my spot on Monday. Going to medical school finally!!! Hope the spot goes to one of you guys.

Still on the waitlist too! I called last week and Jason (the guy I talked to) said I was high up on the list. So I guess its ranked?
Anyhoo, I really want to go!!! AHHH gimme a spot!

So im debating the risk/benefit ratio of giving them a call to ask where I am on the waitlist....Will they hold it against me?

Thanks... do you know where I can find the syllabi? Can't locate anything on the website or google 🙁 I've been out of school for a while so I was hoping to do some light brushing up before getting started

Here's the syllabus from 2010-2011 of the first course we take in August: http://som.georgetown.edu/docs/MCP 2010-2011 syllabus.pdf

Here's the 2010 syllabus for the MNE module (2nd):
http://som.georgetown.edu/docs/MNE Syllabus 2010-2011.pdf

There might be some changes made, but I think these should paint a decent picture on what books we'll need and what content to expect.

Perhaps, you were rejected because you are a decent candidate already and this program would help others more so than it would help you. My, advice, take it for what its worth, just get the clinical experience in and get that GPA to around a 3.3-3.4 and you're golden. If you're okay with the DO route go ahead and apply there as well. Impressive MCAT, BTW!

Good luck!

Hey everyone! Congrats to those already accepted! To those on the wait list keep heart, in past years the wait list has seen a decent amount of movement.

I've gotten quite a few PM's asking about the archive from my blog. I posted in on SDN a while ago but even I can't remember where it is now. I figured rather than sending it individually to everyone I'd just stop by and post it here for those interested.

Hope it helps!

I'll be withdrawing my spot from this program. Was really excited to be a part of this group but I found something more suitable for my situation. Good luck everyone 🙂

Just got into this program yesterday =)

It feels good to finally hear some good news after repeated rejections from MD's.

For anyone who's still waiting on this SMP, I applied May 16th and I got in almost exactly a month later. My stats weren't studly or anything, 32M and a 3.35 cGPA so there's still hope!

Does anyone know how I can get in on this google groups action for the 2011-12 class? And is there a facebook group?

Hey All, CONGRATS to all who have been accepted to the program, I am very jealous! 😛

I just have a concern regarding the timeline of my app

Submitted Date: 5/11/2011
Application Status: Completed on 6/10/2011

I still haven't received a confirmation email nor under review one. Anyone else in the same boat? Should I call them?

thanks

I would definitely call. Since the application goes to a different office than the SMP admissions, they sometimes dont realize that its complete.

Hey guys,
So I'm still on the waitlist for the SMP. I received an email on Friday in which they 'strongly suggested' I take a summer Biochem course to prepare myself for the rigors of the program and medical school. Has anybody ever received an email like this? Does this in any way signify that they will accept me into the SMP if I do decide to take the Biochem course? I'd love to not have to take it, because I work full-time and was looking forward to one month to recharge before the SMP starts. Any input or feedback would be appreciated! 🙂

I received the same email at the end of May. I figured it would hurt me to not end up taking it, so I'm taking one at Villanova that starts next week (I had a time conflict with gu's). I'm still waitlisted so who knows if it will help or be a waste of money. Regardless I guess biochem should help me in the long run...
