Georgetown SMP 2013-2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey, thanks for sharing. I was wondering if you've received any acceptances to other MD programs while in the SMP?

I received one other interview and have a waitlist from it. I suspect it was due to my below average uGPA and average MCAT. I suspect I am to apply next year, I'd have many more options. If you want any specific advice just pm me.

Is there anyone here who did the SMP, and ended up at Georgetown Med in the MD program? It'd be great to hear your experience and why you thought you were ultimately successful as compared to those who were not accepted to the MD program after the SMP.

So decisions went out for current SMPs on Wednesday, I was accepted. Overall I had 3 interviews including georgetown and was accepted at all 3. Ugpa is low @ 3.1 however I think that is just below SMP average. MCAT 34, which I think is vital to compliment a great SMP gpa, mine is 3.9.

Hey, six9silver, thanks for sharing, and its strange to me that you were rejected considering you did so well. What makes you think the interview was moderate?

Also, when you say lower than average uGPA, what's considered lower than the SMP average credentials? For example, would a cGPA between 2.80 to 3.0 range be considered lower than average, or is a cGPA in the 3.0 to 3.2 range considered lower than average?

I don't think you should have a problem getting into med schools given such a high SMP GPA (assuming you haven't gotten in already to a med school this cycle). Thanks so much for sharing your experience, it means a lot to those of us who are in the process of trying to make a decision/thinking about going.

IrishCogs, wow that's great! Congrats on all of the acceptances.

Just curious, when did you submit your primary, and secondaries? I am under the impression that an early submission is less effective for those doing SMP's as schools tend to wait from the letter from the schools indicating grade updates, etc before sending out interview invites.

I submitted my primaries late in August and most secondaries weren't complete until late November. I was hesitant to apply early because I had such a low uGPA but the program I'm pretty sure advises otherwise. Hey, it worked out for me, but overall I may have gotten more interviews had I applied earlier? There's no way to ever find out.

So I think the average uGPA was a 3.3 and MCAT 31 for our class. I had a 3.2 uGPA but my BCPM is a 2.9 because of orgo and physics, which I think they said that average was in the 3s somewhere. However, people do have lower uGPAs and were successful this year, so don't worry if you are below the average.

So interview, I happened to interview with someone who was notoriously difficult and asks physiology questions (only 4-5 interview with him, so its not even worth worrying). He designs it as a pressure interview. I think I couldn't really let myself shine and got flustered on one of the physiology questions (though I did answer).

Current smp here, matriculating, although not at Georgetown 😛

here's what i learned from the program that might be extremely beneficial for you guys.

USUHS, Quinnipiac, NYMC, GWU to name some schools LOVE georgetown smpers! Heck, Dr. Yeckel from Quinnipiac told us during an info session that he looks at the program FAVORABLY, plus he mentioned that Quinnipiac takes in people with 3.4 undergrad gpa and 28 mcat, it all depends on your background and story.

Now, here is another thing you have to consider, ive noticed that there are people who get multiple interviews vs those who do not, but get interviewed by Georgetown.

-Possible reason? in my own experience, I had 6 interviews, but was not able to study well in some of my med classes during these interviews (mind you, you will get the bulk of these in 2nd semester due to how schools would like to wait for your 1st sem grades)= i got B minuses. but another school accepted me. Meanwhile, those students who are able to focus solely on studying acquired an interview at Georgetown only, they did much better than me in our med classes.

*just somehting to consider.

PS: Georgetown, i believe was the main reason I got more interviews than in the past cycle. I love the SMP here, and trust me, you will learn a lot, and it will be worth it! 😀

CONGRATULATIONS! Also, YAY! this gives me hope!!!

So I got into both gtown and NYMC's programs. NYMC seems to be easier for me (within my state, provides housing, etc.). Is the Georgetown name really THAT strong? Would most NY schools at least consider me if I go to gtown vs NYMC?

got waitlisted.

I had a 3.36 cgpa and I applied with GRE's of 168q, 157v

Looking through past years, it seems like the waitlist moves a lot so hopefully I'll get in off of it.

I got waitlisted too, just today. Although I also applied very late...but its good to hear that the waitlist moves a lot! I was going to ask about that lol. Goodluck to anyone else waiting!

Heyo! 🙂 Does anyone know when the year ends in June for the SMP 2013-2014 program? I'm renting a house nearby campus, and I can't find any concrete dates online for a time-frame reference...

Congrats to everyone who got accepted by the way! And those who got waitlisted, waitlists usually move really fast at SMPs. :'3

I was recently accepted and was wondering the same. The website indicates that for the class of 2012, last exam was June 1 with term papers due June 8.

the tentative syllabus that we have says the last exam is May 30 and research paper is due June 6

Right! I think the Google group has a schedule that I hadn't seen yet, since I joined it after posting that.

Thanks! Hopefully i'll be able to arrange something with my landlady. :3

I was accepted off the waitlist today! There's still hope for everybody out there on the waitlist.

Declined my acceptance today. Hopefully one of you gets it! Best of luck to you all 🙂

Does anyone know out of the 180 or so people who get in, how many eventually get into an MD school?

Gonna apply to this one. When is the latest they will take MCAT scores?

hey guys!

I'm going to be applying to smp for the 2014- 2015 cycle. I have to still take my MCATs. Planning on taking them in March/early April. Do you know if they will review my app and wait to make a decision until I send in my MCAT score or will they not even look at the app without an MCAT score?

thanks!

This program is a waste for most people. They only set up this program because the medical school is bankrupt. Look at their wiki page for Georgetown Med. You don't get a guaranteed interview and the classes are incredible difficult. All the former SMPers that said they were able to obtain a GPA of 3.70 or greater from the SMP program are practically geniuses. If you don't have a sponge brain, this program will only saddle you with debt.

They only interview the very best student from the SMP pool. And those that are accepted to Georgetown MD would probably have been accepted without the program.

If you are still interested in this program, please do your research. There is a reason why their class size is huge (200) and charge $50,000 for tuition....there are much better programs out there.

bartxz3, are you an alum of this program? why do you call it a waste if they have a good track record of sending people to med schools? what better programs are you talking about?
