yikes, haha, glad to see somebody is more tightly wound than i am...

didnt mean any offense, just trying to lighten up the mood and let some of you know that there are resilient people out there still that arent giving up despite some hiccups along the way to becoming a physician. i know a bunch of people that bitch and moan about not gettin their 'first choice' or not getting in their first year whereas im grateful that i can make progress this year being accepted into this kick ass program. anyway, my apoligies to those that dont want to read my babble.

Hey CalBear, and anybody else moving Cross-Country, im intending on moving to GU from the bay also (assuming ur still remotely near cal still) and was wondering how you intend to actually do the move. ? ive heard that packing up as many suitcases as possible for airplane checking is best (even though there are extra fees after two bags, etc) then shipping everything else in boxes and meeting them their at the post office. any better ideas?
i.e. sending completely destroyable objects through luggage like a flat panel monitor isnt my concept of a good idea but dishing out the dough to send it through ups in the box it came in (thats 20 times bigger than the thing itself) is also making me cringe.

oh yeah, is anybody planning on roadtripping there from their current location?

I'll be a road trippin little beaver from Houston all the way to DC!! As far as shipping one's gear across these great states of ours it really depends on how mush your gear is worth. If you have a buch of ratty old clothes i'd pawn em off and get some new ones. I would pack as much garbage into my sturdy ride as possible and UPS the rest which runs like $60 a box. UHAULing is always great if you have tons of nice furniture but it is not cheap so to each their own. Anybody down for a little SDN caravan?f We could meet up in Nawlin's and head east from there. I'm not really sure if that would be that sweet of an idea but it sure sounds like a good time.

I'm still trying to figure out what to do with my furniture... store or sell.

I'm planning to cram every possible possesion I can into my little Escort and head out from So Cal to DC sometime around the end of July.

*Then* I gotta figure out what I'm going to do with my car 🙂

you guys probably went over this way earlier since you've all been accepted for a long time, but how should I start looking for housing? help a bro out.

for rite now im in 'going to gu smp' mode til hopefully tulane calls. although rent a cars dont do one ways, my sister is looking into finding a minivan that the company want to sell (is at the end of it's rental lifespan). i can take that one way to dc from the bay area, probably stopping by la, vegas, texas, nahlins, and such. week long end of july excursion...til i get there with a rent a car, my stuff, and no place to live.

so following the advice of many, im waiting til last minute to find an apt in dc.

and a SDN road trip would be awesome.

Hey i have a question for all those attending Gtown next year... for those of you that are re-applying to med schools are you guys doing your amcas now even though you have no grades or anything new to report? Im just curious what re applicants are doing

yes on the reapp.

new personal statement, freshened and additional activity descriptions, and listing georgetown under schools attending with all SMP classes accounted for towards a Masters in Physio.

med schools know that youll update them with grades as you get them and (hopefully) take that into account when deciding 'accept, waitlist, & decline' post-interview...

...which we ALL will have many of during our crazy spring semester right!?

looking forward to talking to you all in person as we complain about juggling interviews with SMP / 1styr GU Med classes.

Hey sorry for the late reply.
The acceptance letter and deposit paper were in what I referred to as a "packet". The snail mail came many weeks after the e-mail confirmation - things are moving really slow at GU and with med school waiting lists!!!
Lots of luck with housing in DC!

tacrum43 said:
Acceptance "packet"? All I got was a letter saying I was accepted and a piece of paper to return with my deposit. Is that what you're referring to, or am I missing something?

So did you list all of the classes you were going to take under as upcoming or what? I'm still a bit confused as to what to do...

oh and for calbear15, you should try the yahoo group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/physios/
there are a couple of people looking for roommates. Other ways of finding housing are listed in the Survival guide for G'town SMPers and g'town's own housing thingie. Another cool website is www.housingmaps.com, which is uses google maps and craigslist. Hope this helpful.

April '05 MCAT scores have come out! Was I the only one here who retook? So happy that mine went up.

OK, so I bombed the april mcat......less than 27...did anyone get into the SMP with less than a 27? I will definitely be re-taking in August. My practice test I was scoring closer to 30---I don't know what happened!!! They SAY you should have a 27, but I've heard of people making it in without. The rest of my record is pretty good, except for a so-so GPA ~3.4.
Can anyone out there give me some hope???

first time i took the MCAT i scored a 19, then after a post-bac scored a 31. I did get into georgetown with a 2.68 GPA which is ways below their 3.0 cut off. Of course I did have 39 credits of 4.0 post-bac work. With your good GPA I wouldnt count myself out at all.

Hey guys, got a question for you! I am really interested in the SMP program at Georgetown, but I was planning on retaking the MCATS in April 2006 to increase my chances of getting in to this program and other lower tier med schools. I know that applications are accepted in Jan. so if I do get in to SMP I want to wait before I take the MCATs over again because 1) i'll probably do better after taking the SMP program and 2)the scores will only be valid for 2 years is it? BUT then there's the chance that I don't get into the SMP program, then I'm screwed cause I'll find that out after the April MCAT and then I won't be able to apply to medical schools that year. What should i do?? I currently have a 3.167 GPA and 27MCAT from Cal.
Thanks!

I applied in late March with a 3.2 and a 29 on the MCAT. I told them that I was retaking in April--they ended up letting me in before they received my final grades or my retake MCAT score. So it's worth applying January when the pool is smaller, because you pass their GPA and MCAT cut-offs and they may really like your application. They started admitting around March, so you could know anytime after that.

If you don't get in before your scores come back in June, they do hold spots for retakers. The downside to waiting for a June admit is that the number of places has shrunk and the applicant pool is much larger.

As for the whole AMCAS vs. SMP vs. year off...that's a choice you should make when looking at your whole application profile, not just the numbers. You're in the right range for the SMP.

Thanks for your reply! Another question though, so you think that I SHOULD take the MCAT again in April? Because I don't want to take the MCAT more than twice so this next time I want to do really well. I was thinking that if I got into the SMP program I would probably be more prepared for the MCAT after the year or two of the program. Also another question, what extracurriculars did you do? I am thinking of getting EMT training so I can work as a EMT while applying or studying for MCATs? I've already done 3 years of lab research so I was looking for more clinical experience. Any suggestions? Thanks again!

GEORGETOWN SMP vs. ROSALIND FRANKLIN AP

what do you guys think.

where to move to...where to move to...

more importantly, better program...better program...

Totally based on weather: I just spent the last four years in Boston, and this year's neverending winter (coldest May on record, 50s-60s until end of May) have convinced me that cold places are bad. Chicago is colder than Boston, so you should go to Georgetown. 😉

More seriously, if you're trying to pick between the two you should really think about how much you want to go to RF med. The SMP will help you apply to a whole range of med schools, while RF seems super-focused on getting you into only RF...but you have a great shot of getting in there.

To anyone looking for housing near GU, I'm vacating my room in the next few days.
I'm looking for someone to take over my lease which starts from July 1st to May 2006. Rent is $620/month.
The room is small, but it has a closet and it's furnished with a bed, a dresser, a desk and a chair. All utilities are included in the rent except the high speed internet, which is about $15/month for one person.

You will be sharing the bathroom with a girl on the same floor.

The house is around the glover park area. It has AC, dishwasher, washer and dryer in the basement and you can use them for free

It's about 10 mins walk to GU hospital and it's close to shops, like whole foods, blockbuster, starbucks and etc. on Wisconsin Ave.

The landlord is looking for someone mature and responsible. No smoking No pets. Grad/med student or person with a stable job is preferred.

If interested, please email me at [email protected].

sweet, just got my gu smp letter in the mail.

there goes my hard earned $500.

heres to still hoping Tulane will take me off the waitlist and make me give up this spot to somebody else.

Could someone please post the address to which we need to send transcripts for proof of graduation? I cant find my letter. Thanks. I appreciate your help.

i had the exact same question.. i heard bad things about the smp program... it being super competitive, cut throat, etc. i agree with the other post about what your ultimate md ambitions are. if it's to get into any school, then maybe the ap program would suffice. but yah, anyone else have any input on which is bettter?

Thanks Tacrum. Hope you're enjoying the summer. See you in august.

Hey everyone I was accepted into the SMP a week ago and Im definitley going to attend. See you in august!!

I look forward to another year with you man!

hear about getting in? call. at this point, theres nothing to lose right?

so who's interested in flying over there and finding an apartment as close to the gu med school as possible!? i want an 'im not from around here, where the hell am i going' buddy (or 5) to go apt hunting with.

How long does take for all the other relevant info to get here after I send in my deposit?

Don't I need to take care of all that insurance and immunization crap?

For those of you that got in earlier, can you tell me what packets you've received so I can get some of that stuff done?

eddaman, good luck house hunting. I recommed that you rent a bike for a day so you can hop from one place to another. the humidity in DC makes it unpleasant to walk for long periods of time..especially for spoiled californians like me. Cabs are expensive and the drivers try to rip you off.

The first thing you need to do is go look the stuff on their SMP's website about accepted students- they have a forms section(http://smp.georgetown.edu/forms.htm ) to fill out for the immunization and where you login in to accept/waive the health insurance (although I still can't seem to accept it online, has anybody else been able to?). They also have link for GO card, and other various things. The only thing I remember receiving in the mail was the fin aid stuff, which i just got on monday (even though i got in like march). I'm sure there is other stuff you will get/need to fill it out- so hopefully somebody else can add to this?

Congrats on your acceptances to SMP!
I just finished this program and will be moving out of DC in a few weeks.
I'm shipping everything to NC so I won't be able to take the SMP classnotes, old exams & syllabi with me. If anyone's interested in buying these, PM me. Most of the students subscribe/buy the old and new notesets & the old exams like I did. So if you buy it from ex physio, you only have to subscribe the new notesets.

FYI, I found my SMP notes to quite useful in certain classes during year 1. I studied off of them instead of my own schools syllabi/lectures and did well. In several cases the SMP notes were more extensive than what my school covered. Just at thought. (In particular Physiology and Neuroanatomy).

Just out of curiousity, how did you bring it to Ohio?

ack, more forms.

so exactly how did/are you guys and gals looking for apts AFTER finding potential places online. schedule a meet and fly over there?

u all sign leases already, doing it at the end of july? what?

I would first try to buy a plane ticket and arrange for a place to stay. You'll have to play around with the dates and times of departure in order to get the cheapest combination.

Once you know which dates you'll be in DC, then I would start scheduling appointments with landlords. I did craigslist, rent.com and apartment.com. Once you get there and walk around the area, you'll also see "for rent" signs.

Most landlords like to show their places on weekends so try to schedule your visit over the weekend if you can. And I don't know if you read my previous post but I highly recommend renting a bicycle. (it only costs a little bit)

good luck

anybody still searchin to fill a house full of smp students?

and sounds like two seperate trips there, apt hunting and moving, sounds best (but not cheapest).

aaay,
.

I boxed them up and threw them in my trunk and drove to Ohio. I was going to say just can just take your Neuro and Physiology notes (not syllabi) but then again thats the bulk of the notes right right? Oh yeah, endo was useful too now that I think about it.

congrats on wfu, i loved that school when i interviewed there 👍

man, i just sent out 15 emails to craigslisters about apts/rooms. am i going about this the right way?

and how much time do you think (or are planning to actually set aside) is necessary to move in, get settled, and handle all that new student stuff for SMP. get an apt now over internet, fly there in august to move in? fly there next week to sign a lease, then go later...etc.

first time moving this far, so lost.
-pointing at myself-

from,

Im going out this week to find a place, in order to really focus Ive decided to go the no roomie route. Looking around there are some really nice places in Alexandria (not too bad of a commute). I then plan to move in Aug 1.

cool.

im thinkin of signing my lease online -!!!- so i can concentrate on handling my business here before i move. i figure if past leasers were smp students and gu students, place cant be that bad.

good luck to all reapplying for 2006!
