Hello everyone,

I am probably in a quite unique position right now. Little background: I have lived in the states for 5 years and have a green card. This summer I applied and got into a good German ( i am from germany) med school (university of greifswald). Currently I am going to pitt undergrad. I definitely want a residency spot in the us. I have a feeling that I have a safe medical degree in Germany but its harder to come back, whereas staying in pittsburgh gives me the risk of not making it to med school.

What should I do??

Need help, thanks!

Hehe, I go to Pitt too! And your username is the author of my intro bio textbook. 🙂

How are your grades thus far? If they are very good, I would stay in the US.

(Oh, and even though my location says Germany under my username, it's supposed to be an inside joke. I'm not actually in Germany.)

Nice, what year are you?

Im in my first semester so I havent really gotten any final grades yet, but I doubt I'll have too much trouble this semester (besides maybe UHC chem 1).

Yeah I have to decide like today... Im so indecisive

oh... I'm a freshman too. Is this a six-year program or a four-year program? The International forum might have people more knowledgeable about the German school.

As a rule of thumb, you should go to school where you'd like to practice. You'll face significantly more red tape with licensing and residency issues if you are a foreign medical graduate.

That said, I do not know the admissions percentages for foreign applicants with green cards. This would be worth exploring, but I assume this will close a number of doors for you.

If you go the German school route, your barriers to practice in the US will be residency and licensing. If you go the US school route, your barrier will be in the initial acceptance.

You said you want a US residency spot. Do you ultimately plan to practice in the US or Germany?

If you want a competitive residency in the states, then I would stay here.
