Hi everyone,

So basically our p1 year we are required to take biochemistry. Some of the students who took a certain level of biochem in undergrad got the class waved after asking the professor.

Basically I was unaware of this policy until after the first exam which I passed, but with a low C. Because of this reason the professor said I cannot wave the course even though I took it in undergrad.

My question is, should I go in and speak to the professor in person about this further to see if I can explain my reasons for performing poorly (it being the first round of exams in pharm school and having an issue with time management)? If so, how should I approach the issue? The other students who got the class waved could have just as easily performed poorly on the exam. I think its necessary for standard procedures to be applied to all students and I feel its not right to treat my situation differently.

Any advice will be helpful. Thanks

So because you didn't apply yourself, you want a second chance so that you can match what the other students did on the first time around? Did they get C's too? If they got C's and had the course waived, then that would be unfair. Then again, it's kind of up to the professor's/program's discretion. We don't know the whole situation....

Maybe there are policies in place. It's your responsibility to know what those policies are.

I retook biochem in pharm school after taking it as a graduate level course (didn't have the option to waive it). I would recommend that you take the class, as it will give you a good review of knowledge that is actually fairly relevant to pharmacy.

At my school, they also taught it from a more health care oriented point of view, so I did learn new things and it helped prep us for pharmacology.

The other students got the class waved before the first exam came around. Pretty much bad timing on my part along with not good time management, which I will def take as a learning experience since this was our first round of exams

If you got a C, that means you don't know the stuff. If you get it waived, you will never learn it. Take the class, study hard.

Stating the obvious, the standard procedure was probably alert the administration before xx/xx/2012 if you feel you are eligible to have a class waived. Unfortunately for you, you introduced subjectivity to the matter by getting a C. I'm sure if a student took biochem and got a c for a final grade the professor would make them retake it in pharm school.

I got an A in undergrad biochem. There isn't a policy or deadline for getting a class waived, some students just asked and got it done. My timing was bad in the sense that it was after a test I did poorly on.

Nice work not only did you do poorly on a test but now your professor thinks you're an idiot. Good luck rebuilding 👍

Why would he think I'm an idiot? We had 2 exams right before biochem and so a lot of people did poorly on that exam.

Anyways, I don't really appreciate your unnecessary comments, I'm simply asking for advice.

My advice is to not make a big deal at this point and accept that you likely will have to finish the class.

Not really important to this conversation, but I had never heard of being waived a class in pharmacy school.

I will speak to the professor respectfully to see if he can reconsider if I get an A on the next exam which is completely in my ability to do. I just wanted to know if other pharmacy students have experienced something similar.

Thanks everyone for your honest input.

It is your job to be aware of the policies of the school...

I had to take an exam to get 2 classes waived in pharm school and they were not easy....

I wave bye to you and I waive off this thread.

I fixed it. Grammar from my phone is hit or miss. Lulz I wonder why the hell everytime is in there

Sometimes I really wonder who programs autocorrect/phone dictionaries. The spacing and capitalization isn't always correct either. It's really annoying when writing emails from my phone because I have to check them a million times

My apologies about the grammar slip 😳 😳

Well, it probably wouldn't hurt to ask the professor again, but I wouldn't count on getting out of the class. Besides, you'll probably be halfway through by the time you get the results of your 2nd exam.

I've also never heard of a pharmacy school waiving a class....either they allow a AP/CLEP test to get out of a class, or they accept the credit from the class completed at another college. If the college automatically accepted transfer credits in the biochem class, then that sucks that your student advisor didn't advise you of that and enrolled you in a class you didn't need. But at this point, I think you will probably have to finish it, I don't think your professor is likely to change his mind.

We had a "Pharmacy Economics" class that one of my friends didn't have to take, because when he was in pre-pharmacy at another school, he took a health care economics class that used the same book as that class, and he also had the syllabus and when the profs saw it, they said he'd essentially already taken that class so he didn't have to take this one. He lucked out, too, because that class was a total joke.
