So I have the pleasure of attending Downstate in the coming year. As I'm sure many of you have experienced, financing this is a major issue. Taking out a loan for the tuition is almost a must (for me at least) but when it comes to other expenses (rooming, books, etc.) I was considering trying to find work to supplement this. I was wondering if there were any other students that had attempted to keep a steady job an attend med school and how that affected your studies.

Thanks!!

On my tour, I was told that holding a job while attending Downstate is against institutional policy, or something to that effect.

Unless you are researching for a stipend or possibly doing some MCAT tutoring, I don't think having a job as a med student is a thing.

Even as a part time thing?

My thoughts were to work somewhere along the lines of bartender/busboy or even a tutor.

Job during med school? Ain't nobody got time for dat.

I know two people who worked in med school. One did it in the 70s. The other was my classmate, who occasionally did bartender work during second year- he was brilliant and still struggled with it. Do not go in planning to have a job. Go in planning to work your ass off just to pass. Take out the loans like everybody else.

this is a really bad idea. get loans to cover your living expenses. do well in school so you can make a lot of money and pay back those loans faster.

can you do it? sure, people do. is it worth reducing the little free time you have, not to mention your study time, to reduce your debt burden by like, what, 10%? no.
