I am curious:

I'm single, and don't really think I will be getting married till after I get out of d school. As a woman, once you get your DDS/DMD or what have you, if you get married and want to change your last name how does that work, since you graduated with your maiden name? Do you just fill out a bunch of paperwork so you can practice as Dr. So and So instead of having your maiden name? I know this is kind of a stupid, but like I said, I'm curious. 😳

You don't have to change your maiden name, the couple who i shadowed never changed theirs, Dr. Roberts and Dr. Collins, they are happily married 🙂.

If you want it changed, it's not too difficult, it'll probably cost a few hundred dollars to get a notary and lawyer to complete some forms and the dental school will reissue you your degree

lol @ marriage. so you expect a man to get down on his knees and propose to you after you have received your dds/dmd certificate? girl please!

In hindsight, as a male, I'll do anything to get your last name changed to make your certificate mean absolutely nothing to you 😀

How was your interview at Colorado by the way? or is that coming up? Good luck on that!

What? 😕

Amped, you win the award for the most snarky comment I've seen on SDN today 😉 Interview is this upcoming Saturday!

I strive to be snarky!

...out of love, hun 😉

I'm pretty sure that the school you graduate from (in coordination with the ADA) will be glad to honor your name change with a "new" certificate. You're an alumnus (edit) so...to them, you're a prize.

Saturday interview? Lucky! You'll impress them with your charm, I hope. You'll do great.

mm one of my best friend's mom is a dentist and she was engaged all thru dental school (while her fiance got his PhD in math) and i think they were engaged for something outrageous like 7 years and once they were financially stable got married.

from what my friend has told me, his mom kept her own last name for her practice for a while and then changed it when she had a stable patient base...idk exactly why and idk if my friend knows but o well.

i honestly never even thought of the name on the degree...

good question. my girlfriend has a better last name than me, i may take hers.

I know a couple who are both dentists. The wife kept her maiden name because otherwise they'd both be Dr.[his last name]

I guess she's Dr.[her maiden name] but Mrs.[his last name]

Just ask them to leave a hyphen after your last name on your certificate. Sharpie it in when you're ready. You probably don't want to marry into a last name any longer than 5 letters though or it might look a little off center and sloppy up on the wall.
