Getting in w/ 2.7 Science & BCP GPA?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi,

I'm an undergraduate with a 2.7 Science & BCP GPA. Overall GPA is 3.2. By the end of Summer 2008, I expect to have at least a 3.0 BCP/Science GPA. I have not taken the DAT scores yet. Is there a chance of me getting into a school if I apply Summer 2008?

I've volunteered at a dental place for a year, done two years of leadership within clubs, gone on a medical mission, held two jobs for 2-3 years, & pay for my own college education.

Do I have a chance in getting into a school? If so, which ones would I get into if i applied.

Thanks & hope to hear from you all soon. 🙂

Not sure who can answer where you have the best shot, but while your GPA is lower than average for dental school enrollees, it isn't horrible. Maybe call schools you are interested in and ask them what you can do to improve your chances. Usually, if you do it early enough and let them know it is for next cycle, they will gladly tell you. Score VERY well on the DAT too. THat looks good. Good luck to you... I think you definitely have a chance esp ifyou can bring that sci GPA up to a 3.0 and have the schools get to know you.

Coming from a good school definitely helps, but it might be to the extent that you would like.

Personally, I was in the exact same situation like yours 2 years ago. I had a sub 3.0 after the second year of my college and I busted my butt off to get to where I am right now. Its not gonna be easy but as long as you are sufficiently motivated I think you can do it.

Good luck!

I am in your same situation, only a year earlier. I'll let you know how everything goes. I was able to pull a 22TS/20AA/17PAT so my scores aren't bad.

my cum gpa is 3.01/ sci 2.75

you always have a shot in getting in as long as your willing to put in the hard work to get there. My brother got into med school this past cycle and his cum. GPA was very low. He busted his ass though going through masters program (GPA of like 3.7 in it) and did alot of research and extracurriculars. he is now starting med school at 27 years age.

I know its corny and cliche but if you really want it, it can be done.

+1

Rock the DAT, period.

I"m talking 20+ across the board rockin' it, and you're good to go!

Which is weighed more heavily: BCP or Science GPA?

My thought is that I don't think one is quite weighed higher than the other but its puts your gpa into sort of a perspective. If you have a high science gpa but a low BCP it might appear to the adcoms that your science gpa is simply high because you are taking "easier" classes to boost your gpa. Your science gpa is still looked at along with your cumulative gpa. I guess to a point if your sGPA was low but your BCP was pretty good it might help you but I think it would have the opposite effect the other way around. I'm sorry for rambling but hopefully you can make at least some sense of it 🙂
