  1. Pre-Pharmacy

I plan to start Pre-Reqs in the summer. I am still a little indecided on what to major in. Im going to attend a community college and go year round. I havent been nin school for so long I just want to start off on the right track. I though about Biology or Communications. What's some of the majors out there?

If you haven't been in school for some time, I would start out a little slow and not completely load yourself with science courses only. Would you be taking 2 years of pre-reqs and then going to pharmacy school? Or do you want to go to a CC, transfer to a 4 year, and earn a Bachelor's degree?

It seems as if the majority of pre-pharm students have science majors, but there are some who have majors like business and communications. I would got with what you enjoy, but make sure that you do really well in the pharmacy pre-reqs!

yes the program is 2 years at a CC transfer into Pharm program for 4 years. The school is fairly new SIU-Edwardsville..

Look for the schools that you are interested in applying, then print off the list of classes that they want and start taking them. Keep in mind that if you haven't taken any chemistry classes, that would require at least 2 years of your time and only if you are placed in the right math class. So if you are in low-level math, you might have to take some math classes before you can take your chemistry. So make sure you plan it right and don't just take random classes. In theory, it's a 2 year pre-req, but in reality, it takes longer than that. The pre-req is for the people that place in the right level and are going to school full time. You want to take classes that are in series first, and worry about communications later because you can fit that in your schedule anytime. Take to your advisor. Make sure you schedule the right classes and know when they're offered so that you don't have to wait for a year to take the next class.

If you're going to do a 2-year and then "transfer" to pharmacy school, you don't need to have a major. Just have the pre-req done.

I agree with everyone else on this forum so far. Just like to add a few things..most people I know applying to pharmacy school are biology majors. Some are chemistry or biochemistry majors. Others I know are Econ majors. What it comes down to is..the prerequisite courses for each pharmacy program. Those of us who chose science majors hit most of the prereqs as we work towards our degree. If you are a liberal arts/humanities major (ie. Econ) and you want to pursue a degree as well....you'd be working on the classes for your major in addition to taking science prereqs for pharmacy school. This brings me to my next point: pharmacy schools do not mandate a degree as long as you have your prereqs done. However, applying for pharmacy school has become very competitve and a degree makes you a more competitive applicant. Good luck with your prereqs!🙂

i misread the title and was like what the:laugh:

My situation is identical to yours, Angela. We are pretty much in the same boat. I've planned out my schedule for the next two years. (I would like some feedback on that. Just in case, I'm planning to transfer to UNCW after two years to continue in a degree as yet to be determined if I am not accepted to a Pharmacy School in North Carolina. I found a list for the pre-req's to both school's from UNCW so I had to check on the classes I needed while going to Coastal Carolina Community College in Jacksonville, NC.

You'll need to check out the equivalency of classes from your CC to your 4-Year just in case, as a back up. I've contacted the representative at my CC for information on transfers and course equivalency at UNCW. This is so rare for someone to do this at my CC that they had to give me a number to call a doctor at UNCW. Nobody ever does Pre-Pharmacy req's out of CCCC. Which doesn't mean that I am doing something wrong. Just that I know I want to go into Pharmacy and the great thing about Pharmacy in NC is there is a chance the state will pay for my college if I agree to work in NC. Which I plan on doing anyway because the family is here.

Anyways, this is my Study Plan.. (Any feedback please.)

Angela, if you would like to have the Excel file let me know. I can email it to you. Basically to cover yourself, check the 4-year college that suits you best. See what courses from there are allowed through the COP's you would like to attend. Then check there equivalency from the 4year, in my case UNCW, to the CC, in my case, Coastal Carolina Community College.

I've aligned them up to transfer. I still have to contact the Doctor from UNCW to make sure all the wrinkles are ironed out.

If you need any help finding the equivalency transfer report for a state, college, or whatever let me know. I'll be glad to help. I'm actually excited to know that someone is doing the exact same thing as me. I kinda felt like I was a rogue.

I don't see an OChem 2 in there...make sure you don't miss the class if needed!

See this is exactly what I am talking about. I get everything laid out, seeing what I needed using a list I found off UNCW's website and it turns out that when I look through Campbell and UNC-Chapel Hill's sites respectively, that either I have an outdated copy or something. Man, thanks for catching this. I'm gonna send out for some information and re-check/double-check/quadruple-check all my efforts to this point.

Thanks again.
