Just curious... How many of you guys have received OMM treatment? I'm going to a new doctor next week because I just moved, and though I've been a patient of a DO before, I've never been manipulated. I just got off the phone with the new doctor's scheduler and to confirm the appointment she was like, "okay we'll see you next week for a prescription refill and some manipulation".

I'm kind of excited... I've seen it done a couple of times but never experienced it firsthand. From what I understand it's pretty pleasant. What are your experiences with it?

I want to get it done for some back issues. I messed up my back in high school and went to a DC to get it worked on ... needless to say, it never got better and has been bugging me for years.

Now, now. I wish you all the best with managing your back pain, but please don't blame your chiropractor.

Long periods of studying can lead to quite a bit of discomfort. It is nice to be able to have one of your classmates treat you.

Getting manipulated is great!

I love getting OMM'd

🙂

That right, a chiro can receive credit for alleviating pain, but please NEVER blame one. :eyeroll: good god facetguy, do you just cruise the forums commenting on any perceived slight towards DCs? Maybe hold your comments next time b/c i doubt that you know the exact circumstances of JaggerPlate's pain...m'kay?

I actually went to two ... and it got worse with each one. So I guess you can say I blame ... chiropractors!! :meanie:

Just kidding. I'm not blaming DCs for the pain, I'm just saying that they didn't fix it ... and it's gotten worse with time. I personally don't see DCs anymore for anything.

My dad goes to the chiropractor sometimes, wait until he learns his son can "crack his back." Bacchus, will you crack my back? "Dad, only if you give me $10"

hope your dad knows what D.O. means, cos my dad thinks D.O. = D.C.

Yeah, my wife's going to have some OMM done in the near future for some back issues she's having. I'm pretty excited to see what becomes of it, I've seen a DO do her thing before, but haven't known any patients who have received OMM. OP, let us know how your omming goes.

No, I am not on 'anti-chiro patrol' or something. I happened to see Jag's remark and quickly commented. And of course I know nothing of Jag's exact circumstances, how could I? Regardless, his statements suggested that his DC was destined to fail to improve Jag's condition, and that is of course ridiculous. Very simple.

Also, why didn't the Teen Girl Squad ever get OMM'd!?

According to my dad (an MD, but he loves DOs because he will do anything for a back massage), "teenagers never have back pain." (Said to me when I was a teenager and complaining of back pain)

Yes, you'll get a lot of these family requests. At first it will be cool, then it becomes a bit of a drag. I never thought of the $10 idea though...that could work!

My husband is a computer programmer... I'm thinking of getting him one of those "No I will not fix your computer" shirts. They need one like that for DOs I guess.

Ridiculous or not is a personal call. Plenty of people don't believe in chiropractors. My mother, for example. Not only does she not believe they are helpful, she doesn't even believe they exist. There's ridiculous for you.

And what, pray tell, would she say if you opened up the Yellow Pages to Chiropractors? 😕

She acts offended and changes the subject.

She's otherwise pretty rational. Maybe she has repressed memories of being bitten by a chiropractor as a child or something? I've never been able to figure it out.

Can I arrange a sitdown with this woman? She sounds fascinating. 😀

If you want to become a lawyer as well as a doctor, then that would be easy... she's a law professor. (Kinda scary, I know!)

Oh yeah, and while we're on the subject of trivia about my mom... she took the MCAT while she was in law school and aced it. All this while taking care of 2-year-old me. Yeah. Intimidating.

I guess you have to be a little crazy to be that smart.

Back on the subject of OMM: I have a question that I just thought of.

Is OMM only applied to the spine/ribs? Or is it performed on other areas of the body? I read a mention in something about A.T. Still doing OMM on feet... but I don't know if that practice died out or what? I never hear about anything except spinal manipulation, but feet are also an area with a lot of joints that get a lot of stress, so it seems plausible.

I bet you would get a kick out of this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Osteopathy-Re...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1236782696&sr=8-1

Added to Amazon wishlist... At the very least, adcoms will see it when they Google me 😉

Good thinking! 😉

It's pretty dense and becomes fairly redundant for the non-OMM practitioner (I assume it might be different for someone who actually knows OMM), but it's really interesting to see what the man himself had to say about what he created a profession around.

I'd recommend borrowing rather than buying it, personally.

I got OMM'd on my interview at LECOM-B. Anyone who gets OMM'd gets in. That's my personal theory.

Of course its ridiculous, because there are no legitimate criticisms of chiros out there. Whats that part about vertebral subluxations being the root of all diseases again?

I don't even try to explain, haha. The 'rents say, "My boy's gonna be a doctor." Its better than what they could say.

Me too, no point in explaining, all they hear is doctor. Also the thread title "getting OMM'd" sounds filthy.

No, OMT, which is actually used to describe a conglomeration of techniques and concepts, can be applied to areas other than spine/ribs. I think you are correct, though, that spinal manipulation is probably the most well-known and seen. In addition to spinal and rib OMT, you will also learn OMT to diagnose and treat other articular structures and their associated conditions, such as, yes, feet, hands, wrists, knees, elbows, innominates, sacrum, glenohumeral, radial/ulnar, tibial/fibular, etc. You'll see how structures relate to one another and how pathologies/somatic dysfunction in one area can impact others, for example, in short leg syndrome, and the osteopathic approach to diagnosing and treating these types of conditions. You'll also learn soft-tissue techniques and techniques to address lymphatics and maybe some of the other organ systems, too. If you buy into it, you'll also learn cranial techniques.

Eventually, if you get into an osteopathic medical school, you may be required to get the green FOM book, which, in my opinion, is a difficult read, but it does have many, if not most, of the techniques and theories outlined. I like An Osteopathic Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment, by DiGiovanna, though. It's a better read.

It's 2009. At least update your attack to reflect current science (if you can).

This was, of course, following a complete history and physical exam?

Hawt. I'm gonna ask my DO to look at my messed up knee, then.

Side note: anyone with bad knees, beware OUCOM! They did build an escalator to get you up Jeff Hill but it's still pretty damn hilly.

I loved it, my university's team physician was a DO and manipulated me a few times. I loved it although you may be sore afterwards. You don't realize how out of place your bones get until they get put back right again. It feels amazing.
