Getting rid of an ADDICTION for school

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Since it is on subject... I pretty much gave up my life for two summer months to hit rank 13 back in the old days (didn't need 14) and had 80k lifetime HKs over two to three years before I decided to sell my account towards the end of 07... but I got through college OK. Not sure how it would have turned out if I was already in pharmacy school. I do not play any MMORPGs now, just some Frozen Throne and trying to get SC2 beta!!

I almost did not post this but whatever... I don't know if it was an addiction. I just wanted to be really good.

I similarly gave up my life to participate enough in the War Effort so that my guild would let me have the scepter for Scarab Lord!

When I look back, I'm not too regretful, but I could've made some better decisions.

I'd stick with the video games. If you give up one thing, another thing needs to take its void.

Next thing you know...two years later, you are a crackhead living in an old abandoned warehouse trying to steal old copper piping out of houses for money.

A least with video games, Xbox Live is a flat annual fee and you can consume as much of it as you want.

Oh, and Battlefield 2 is way better than Modern Warfare 2.

Say the people who suck ass at Modern Warfare 2. To the OP: you don't have to quit playing video games in pharmacy school, I play Modern Warfare 2, World of Warcraft, Starcraft 2 Beta, and Day of Defeat: Source every day, and I'm fine.

I usually try not to play video games during the school year, especially since I got an 80% on my first therapeutics test of the semester due to demon souls. My boyfriend has a whole list of co-op games for us to play once the semester is over, which will be a nice break. 🙂

As for WOW, I never really liked that game much; I never thought it was as good as DAOC at its prime. Currently, can't wait for D3 to be released, just hope this happens after I am done with pharmacy school!

World of Warcraft wasn't around in 2002 mate.

I started playing about a week after launch in December 2004.

I don't agree with Dub-V too much but in this case he's right.

Instead of totally giving up the video games what you have to do is practice self-control and play them in moderation.

I'm on a top 10 PvP team for WoW and right now playing on the Arena Tourney realm competing for a slot at the San Diego Regionals (Prize money, wooo) but yet, I still manage not to play too much. It can be done...

lol for reals? what bracket/battlegroup? i didn't think i'd ever meet another arena enthusiast outside of the game. well except for my bf.

WoW + person with a perfectionist personality = bad combo.🙁 Games you can't ever really "win" are not cool!

Haha just curious... About how many hours do you play a week? and about how many hours are you studying for school? and if you don't mind....about what GPA are you pulling with this situation? If you're some genius that can pull straight A's while studying the bare minimum....I wouldn't be able to relate. 🙄

I kicked WoW over a year ago and never looked back, although I do miss it sometimes. I really need to kick the habit of doing nothing all day. Sitting on my ass doing ZERO and just eating/watching TV when I could be doing a million other things... it's good every now and then but in my second year of pre-pharm I really need to start focusing harder. :/

I'm addicted to happiness, I just can't seem to get it out of my system and I know that it will really bother other students when I go to pharmacy school so I am unsure if I should be a closet happy or an open happy. I guess I can just substitute happy for gay and then I have to decide if I want to be a closet gay or an open gay.

Is it bad I don't know what World of Warcraft is? lol

I just asked my boyfriend what it was and like 5 min later I hear "I'm gunna be playing this like crack" so I look up and he's signing up like "Oh yeah I forgot about this game".

I'm addicted to SDN.

I guess it's because I can somehow justify it in my head that it's productive because it has to do with school in a way.

I'm not really addicted to much else except caffeine, but I am NOT giving that up for pharmacy school. lol

me too not addicted to video games...though everyone at my home loves video games, MW2, DOTA etc...
i m just addicted to caffeine and i m sure not giving it up...lol

MW2. I've been playing online for the past 4 months or so now. Last year, it was the same story with COD4. Still, I don't play so much that I get the shakes if I can't play for a day or two. I love videogames in general and there's no way I'm giving them up.

Giving up an addiction isn't a solution anyway. Everything just needs moderation.

I'm just upset that I won't be able to take my 37" 1080p panel with me when I move out!

Think about how much time and energy is wasted on video games, think about it.

you guys have boring addictions

What about addicted to working and making money? That happens to a lot of people. Seems more productive and fun than video games to me. lol

I am addicted to SLEEP 😀... It is like I need at least 7 hours of sleep in order to function the next day ...

😴😴😴SLEEP😴😴😴

PCPRODUCT was probably addicted to Everquest.

LOL, so most of you seem addicted to games too. See...it's hard to think critically during your studies when you're just trying to finish up half-ass work so you could go Level up some more.
Definitely not WoW or Everquest lol. Passion4Sci got it right though. 🙄

i can relate to the OP. he's talking about dota (or hon), a game that's extremely difficult to play in moderation and changes with every game. this is probably due to games lasting an average of an hour. it's extremely aggravating to lose so you keep playing till you win. the satisfaction of winning is so remarkable that you thirst for that feeling again; and so the cycle continues. next thing you know, its been 7-8 hours and getting ready to go to class XD!

as a matter of fact, i'm still a victim. i have uninstalled numerous times only to realize that im sitting there watching the download bar progressing towards my demise.

I totally agree. In the past 2-3 years I have uninstalled that DAMNED game only to reinstall it in a couple of weeks or months later. Unlike any FPS games, every kill in this game takes patience, confidence, keen motor skills, as well as critical thinking. Therefore, it's hard to just QUIT when you've finally learned to kick ass.

Anyways...I used to think that gaming was tied to the developing stages of our life .....and that one day we'll eventually grow out of it. It doesn't give me hope when I'm selling games on craigslist....and some OLD 40 year DAD with his infant in his arm is picking up the game that "he gotta beat in one sitting". LOL anyways....cant wait for school to start 🙂 GL all

I am totally addicted to the internet......youtube, facebook, twitter, dailybooth, SDN, blogs/vlogs, iTunes...etc. I just hope i can refocus; maybe check all of these to get it out of my system and forget them for the rest of the night. I think i may put a password on my internet and only tell my boyfriend the password so he has to log me on and off....this may start a fight.

Everyone has their own definition of what constitutes "a waste of time."
You could probably, objectively, put activities on a scale of 0 to 10 according to their level of time wastefulness, where 0 is staring at a wall and 10 is something like spending every waking moment on developing scientific theories. What most people do to entertain themselves probably fall around the same number range (near 0), so who cares?
ie: Some dude's girlfriend gets mad at him for wasting time playing stupid video games, meanwhile she's getting a pedicure, watching E! news, watching The Hills, etc. (I'm not bitter or anything). At least video games are good for your brain.

How can doing something that you personally enjoy and find fun be a waste of time? Everyone has their own preference. I may not want to waste my time doing something you find fun or of value. It doesn't matter as long as we all enjoy our own interests.

Heyyy getting a pedicure is not a waste of time... It's good for your feet! lol

But I dunno about E! News or The Hills...

My scale:
0 = lame
10 = want to do this all the time

0 = stupid TV series (ie the hills, weeds, the vampire one, every variation of Friends, Sex and the City, et al.), shopping
5 = video games,
8 = movies, concerts,etc.
10 = yoga, massages, pedicures/manicures, cultural events, new restaurants (ethnic foods mostly)

So yeah...

Lemme guess what you're addicted to?

*Turns TV on*

Pat Sajak: "Category is Internet Addictions. 4-letter word. Spin the Wheel!"

Player 1: "I'll take an 'O', Bob."

Pat: "It's Pat. And you can't do that without any money."

Player 1: "Here's some crack. That do it for ya?"

Pat: "... ... ... One 'O', everybody!"

P O _ N

(I know, I know, how'd the "P" and the "N" get there? It's a mystery. Musta been a glitch in the screens.)

Player 1: "I'd like to solve the puzzle, Bob."

Pat: "It's Pat."

I'm addicted to wanting to play video games, but never actually having time to play them. But after 2:45PM this tuesday, finals are over. Which means I'm buying Demon's Souls and possibly Monster Hunter Tri, and not looking back. The first time in 6+ years that either a) I don't have a full-time job, and/or b) I don't have classes full-time. I'm going to kick it like I'm 13 years old this summer. And I'm seriously considering getting a crappy part-time job at a grocery store or fast food joint where I can act like an ass, and it won't matter if I get fired or not.

But the real addiction? Procrastination. Which is why I'm on here instead of studying for O Chem II. Damn reactions, there's just too many! My professor is a masochist. But, time to log off of here and get back to work.

Call of Duty for sure. But I'll stop the habit once I live in the library at the University.

This is so nerdy ...

Addiction: Worrying too much about getting school work done because it's never ending ...and when I'm finally not worried, I'm worried that I should be worried. Yikes. I swear I have a life.

Goal: Don't fricken pack so much into my schedule and maybe it won't be so bad! I have too many hobbies and interests.

I actually quit playing WoW so that I could start school last fall. I played that game hardcore for 5 years haha. No more MMOs for me because I'm a procrastinator.

I'm just finishing up my first year of school working on prerequisites. I've played MW2 and SC2 beta along the way and I've been fine.

It's funny how my first post happens to be on a topic having to do with video games when I've been reading these forums for the past 8 months.

Staring at a tv screen from a couple feet away for 8 hours at a time is not good for your eyes or brain.

amplified to the extreme, anything can be made to appear detrimental to your well being

I like how Phathead changed his avatar to a picture of a girl. Now everyone's gonna think that both Passion AND Phathead are snotty little bitches. 😀
