Thanks for the info Gilove. Had applied to almost 55 programs, got 7 interviews, already got rejects from 20 (mostly after emailing them asking for status of application)

Only about 10-15 programs are actually still reviewing applications, the rest are all done now with their selections.
 
Can somebody give me an advice please?? I am 2ndyear resident in a good residency program ( but not one of the top). I have some publications, I am doing basic research but no results yet. No interviews for this year except my program (applied for 33 programs). Do you guys think MPH degree is helpful or MS degree? or I should just spend some time in research after reisdency

If I were you, I'd apply to a lot more programs. Unfortunately as a FMG you are at a distinct disadvantage but not insurmountable. I've talked to a couple of program directors that filter out any FMG applicants (apparently with ERAS you can set a lot of criteria so they don't even review applications which don't meet certain thresholds). Continue doing the research but cast a much broader net next year. If you're that interested in going into GI, you should be willing to go most anywhere.
 
I am willing to go anywhere. The problem is that I don't know what to do after the 3rd year, Should I do research, Hepatology fellowship, MPH.....................? N0 Gurantee
 
Look, if you really want it you've got to plan more than just one year ahead. It could takes several years of doing good, connected research, ... all the while making continuously more contact in the academic GI community.

There're advantages and disadvantages of each option...

Hepatology- There's going to be fewer than 10 institutions that will offer this after this year's match- most of the old one's are only taking GI fellows. If you're lucky enough to get one, you definitely need to keep publishing while there so the attending you work with will be able to give you a good rec.

Pure research- Not a good option. To get enough published, it will likely take 2-3 years of this (you know, about how long it takes to get a PhD) - which is bad because you'll lose your clinical skills that we're all still not done honing, and the GI program directors know this.

Hospitalist- Good if you continue to publish GI-related research with the department you're working with now, or any other academic GI department out there. Problem is, if you work full time you won't have enough time on the side to get any significant volume of published material out there. If you work in a remote place there won't be any research around. A very good option would be to sign a contract w a hospitalist group where your residency is for only half-time work (you'd be making more than we are now as residents and working less than we are now, and make way more cash than you could get doing full-time research, you can keep investing w 401K's, all the while keeping your clinical skills)! True dedication to get GI if you really want it will take years, potentially.

Finally, read "Who moved my cheese." Seriously. It takes an hour to read.

Are you guys familiar which programs might offer heapltology only fellowship?
I was thinking about doing Ph.D and moonlight at the same time. But it will take 4 years at least to get a Ph..D and I don’t know if would help.

Most Hepatology fellowships will stop offering it to people who have not done GI training because of the new requirements by the Hepatology board for certification.Even if you do a year of Hepatology fellowship,it will be hard to find a job as a Hepatologist for the same reasons, if you restrict yourself geographically.You could find a job if you are willing to go anywhere.A Hepatology fellowship is not a guarantee for GI fellowship, as I can attest from personal experience as an FMG doing my fellowship from a very well reputed program.Despite everything,I have only one interview besides an interview from my own program,which is only a courtesy interview.I am seriously considering a PhD part-time while working,if it exists,since I do see that a lot of programs want PhDs.

I agree with all the others that this is a marathon and not a sprint....

Got rejections from Temple, Western Penn, Medical College of Georgia. Has anybody heard from Wayne State University, Baylor University (Dallas), Mount Sinai (NY) or Long Island (Albert Einstein - NY)???

Heard from WashU and BIDMC over last 2 weeks. Not a single word from the NYC programs, Philly programs or Baylor Houston. Anybody knows why?😕

these programs do have more time to decide... last yr i didn't hear from some until april. even though it's nice to know farther in advance when the interview is going to be in terms of cheaper airplane tickets, they could even go so far as telling us just two weeks before the interview day.
i just got one yesterday from baylor dallas.
 
Robert Wood Johnson, LIJ and North Shore all did similar things last year. They entered the total number of fellows in the program instead of the number of fellows they were planning on taking per year and matched way too many. There's a big logjam for next year and possibly in the future of those programs. Don't expect to hear from them. Nice that they agreed to take our money though.

Word from the street: (totally unsubstantiated)
I heard Mt. Sinai is wrapping up their interviews already.
Montefiore is just starting to interview.
UMDNJ Newark is looking at apps just now.
St. Lukes/Roosevelt has started interviewing.
SUNY Stony Brook has sent out some interviews.
Beth Israel is pretty much done with their interviews.
 
Thanks for the info! Baylor Houston has called more people than all the programs in Texas need and is done with finalizing the list.
 
How about Tufts/NEMC and Wayne State? Anybody hear from them?
 
Tufts finished with interviews close to a month ago. Haven't heard anything about Wayne State. Also UMDNJ Newark has already set up interviews to the best of my knowledge

Thanks Ileus. As fas as I know UPMC has already finished finalizing/interviewing applicants, got a reject from them 3 weeks ago. UNC-CH is supposedly still reviewing applications. Dont know about ECU.

I have recently received rejections from programs such as Duke, Rush, UCSD, UT San Antonio, Univ of Chicago, and Mayo Scottsdale.
No more interview offers for the past three weeks.

I think it is over, and I am just waiting on rejections now.

On a positive note, you only need one interview to match!
Thats what I keep telling myself, with only four interviews.
 
Hi, I'm new in the forum. I'm a PGY-2 from a community IM program going through some interviews (4 so far). I got offered a GI research fellowship. What do you guys think about research fellowships?🙁
 
Do you guys send e-mails, cards, etc to the program directors and chief of the division afterwards? What about all the interviewers? Do you e-mail/call with any subsequent questions or to express interest in their programs? Just wondering what I should/should not be doing. Thanks
 
to gastricbanding: depends on your overall strength as a candidate and total number of interviews. but really, the old addage is... a bird in the hand is worth five in the bush. if somebody's offering you a spot, no matter research or what... take it. easy. maybe it meant more in years past whether it was research or clinical when one didn't need so many ERCP's (180 nowadays) completed in order to be certified, but even w most clinical fellowships u aren't certified in ERCP's.

to ileus, yes, thank you's are necessary to each attending you spoke with. i don't know about calls since they could be seen as annoying, unless somebody mentioned to you at the interview that they want you to call w questions instead of asking them in the thank you.

some interview information that could be useful: Temple seems malignant - 1st year fellows get in at 5-6 AM to preround!! Almost as bad as Jefferson. UTSW is offering research positions outside the Match.

questions: has Penn finished interviewing yet? Also, has Columbia begun interviewing external candidates yet? What about Northwestern in Chicago?

When I was at Northwestern they said theywere going to be done interviewing in February.
 
I'm winding down on the interviews now. So far I've been to UCSD, Wake Forest, Cleveland Clinic, Pittsburgh, and Nebraska. My last ones are at Baylor, Oklahoma, and Dartmouth. Nebraska was the only program where the call seemed unbearable - you're on consults for the whole first year and on call during the week for the whole year. Weekends are split between all fellows. Other than the call, though, it seemed like a good program. I've liked CC, Wake Forest, and Pittsburgh.

Anyone have any information about these programs (how malignant they are, etc)? Any info is appreciated.
 
Just got two more interviews in the past week from MetroHealth in Cleveland and Brody in Greenville, NC.

To oumonty, I've known IM residents and GI fellows at Cleveland Clinic and they're all quite satisfied. There seems to be a little disconnect w the attendings as they're all v. subspecialized and immersed in their own fields, but that is made up for with the solidarity amonngst the fellows. Also, it's pretty snazzy to say you've come from there as they've got the current presidents of AASLD and ASGE and two past ACG presidents.
 
Got one last week from UF at Jacksonville. A rejection for Case-Western Metrohealth
 
Rejection from Columbia today. Still no word from UCLA and UNC. Anybody has input?
 
For everybody who is asking about UCLA.....They are just interviewing 10 people total for 4 spots. I just met somebody who interviewed there. Isn;t that crazy..................

From what I've heard, Albert Einstein - Montefiore hasn't sent out interview invitations yet! A bit late I think...

I never got a rejection from UCLA, Northwestern, GW, Penn, or Jefferson, but I assume they're wrapping up interviews now.
 
Just got a rejection from Beth Israel and Wash U. Never heard from Jefferson, Baylor, Galveston, and a bunch of smaller community programs either.
 
My list of interviews: Cleveland Clinic, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Baylor, Wake Forest, Pittsburgh, Dartmouth, UCSD.

Does anyone have any info about Baylor? Seemed like a good program with a pretty unique set up. I'm not sure how I'm going to rank them yet. Has anyone thought about their rank list order?
 
It sure is a unique program. I interviewed there too this year. One of my GI attendings graduated from their fellowship a few years back. Personally, I feel it does give a solid clinical education what with the one-on-one attending to fellow set up each month. Tons of conferences too. And, it seems that there's nice research opportunities in colon ca and hepatology.

What I consider to be drawbacks are the absence of a VA system there (a gold mine of raw data) and the relative lack of contact with med students and residents.

Oh, and they interviewed what, like 30 people for 2 spots.
 
Has anyone heard back either positively or negatively from the programs that they've interviewed at. I've e-mailed virtually everyone that I've interviewed with, the places that I'm more interested in I've bluntly stated that. But overall only a few replies, a couple very positive. Anyone else have any experiences? 1 month to go!
 
two more weeks to go for the rank list -- i thought the traffic on this site would have increased by now. ileus, i sent out thank you letters after my interviews, but haven't sent anything (ie emails) since then.

i'm struggling with my rank list; not sure how much the name/reputation should factor in to my decision. hopefully it will all work out. good luck to everyone on getting their lists together!
 
Well, not exactly matched via the NRMP of course, but I was offered a spot outside of the match at MetroHealth in Cleveland. Hells yeah!

For all those waiting for 6/20 to come and go, there's one less interviewee at 11 other institutions out there.

Good luck to all, and to those first time applicants (it was my 2nd year of applying), keep it up. If you really want GI b/c you genuinely like the field, keep applying and it will become obvious to certain program directors out there that you're not just applying because scoping bills higher than talking to patients. After all, what's a few extra years of applying to get to do what you really want for the rest of your career?
 
Well everyone...Today is the last day to submit rank lists and I just wanted to wish all of you the best of luck.

It is now out of your hands.....just keep the faith and everything will work out. I am an FMG and took a pre-match position in Los Angeles approx 1 month ago....so believe me anything is possible. Just trust that all of your hard work and effort is gonna pay off....

The only other advice I can give is to not have all your eggs in one basket. Make sure you have a back plan already implemented ie.. research position with predominant GI specialist, nutrition or hepatology fellowship etc...

its always best to be prepared for the worst and be pleasantly surprised when everything works out 😉
 
It's been real quiet around here as I guess everyone that interviewed is anxious for match day and those who didn't get any interviews are long gone from the board. Match day is < 72 hours from now. I wish everyone luck.

I'm scared. I think I got enough interviews...I dunno what to do if I don't match. If i got enough interviews had enough research and don't match whats gonna change if I reapply next year?? Plus I'm on call tomorrow....sucks to be me...
 
How'd everyone do. I was fortunate enough to get my first choice though I would have been happy at many places further down my list as well.
