I'm a flight doc who's GTFO after 4 years in purgatory, heading to civilian residency. I opted into the pre-911 GI bill and am now submitting the online VA application to get the process rolling.

Several questions I need help with:

1. When I submit the VONAPP at the website, I am going to attach my DD 214 as well as the receipts showing that I bought into the GI bill and paid up for the "kicker." Are there any other documents which should be submitted with the completed application to expedite this process??

2. What is the next step? Do I need to call my GME director at the residency program and ask her to verify my enrollment in the program? How does she do this? Is there anything else the VA needs from the GME office?

3. What else do I need to do in order to birddog this whole thing? I have heard some people say that the process can take up to 8 months. If that is so, my liquor budget is going to suffer.

Thanks in advance.

Submit for eligibility through VONAPP, wait for Certificate of Eligibility to come in mail, then contact your GME department to contact the VA directly. If you are tied to a larger school which has alot of GI Bill students, they may have a VA office. Going through them to get approval is usually eaiser. That VA coordinator will need your DD 214, residency contract, and certificate of eligibility. Then be prepared to wait 6-9 months (I did)

Any reason you stayed with the Montgomery GI Bill?

Happy trails!

Ditto what cautionmaster says.

Also, 61November, for GI Bill payments for folks meeting criteria via residency, the VA certifies individual residencies, not institutions (i.e.: if no one has gone through your specific program, like Ortho at Univ of Alabama, you will need to have your individual program certified).

many people calculate out their MGIB benefits to be higher per month than their post 9-11 GIBill.

ALSO.....

if you're eligible for EITHER MGIB or the post 9-11 bills,
then you're eligible for an EXTRA 12months of the post 9-11 GIBill if....

that's right, a total of 48months... IF
1) you're eligible for EITHER the MGIB or the post 9-11
and
2) you exhaust your MGIB completely FIRST
and
3) then on day 1 AFTER your MGIB is exhausted you apply for the post 9-11 GI bill.

--the key is to not apply until the day after your MGIB has been exhausted. if you apply too early, ie: with 1 day of MGIB eligibility then they'll only give you 1 day of post 9-11. what a difference a day makes.

I had my 36mo GI bill for civilian residency after GTFO .milmed
now I'm 5mo into my 12months of additional post 9-11 GI BILL.

it helps take the sting off residency salary dips in expensive cities.
but expensive cities and poor resident salaries are still preferable to GMO-land.
