Cost is not an issue, GI bill will cover all tuition.

School 1: UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry

Pros:
  • Spend D1 & D2 year in older building but has a better library (open 24/7) and also allows interaction with students of other professions (med, nursing, PA, etc)
  • One of the schools that teach implants
  • World-class faculty (some of which wrote textbooks used nationally)
  • 40/100 students of last years graduating class went on to further education through specialty/residency programs
  • More things to do
  • Seems like there are more things to get involved in (like volunteering, rotations and an externship to japan)
  • Easier for my wife to find Jobs in her field
Cons:
  • Faculty seemed a bit standoffish
  • Seemed more gunner friendly (one of the D3 that ate with us said watch out)
  • I heard the curriculum was one of the toughest (non clinical)
  • Spend D1 & D2 year in an older building; sim lab & classrooms are more cramped/not as new
  • Slightly higher cost of living
  • Patient scheduling is done for you (unsure if this is pro or con)

School 2: Dental College of Georgia

Pros:
  • Brand new facility with way more chairs than students
  • School helps with giving you patients, but you oversee scheduling and care plan
  • The students were extremely passionate about their school being the school we should choose
  • Augusta felt more like home and more laid back (less competitive)
  • Closer to friends and family (father-in-law has cancer 5hr drive vs 14hrs)
  • Has every specialty
  • Closer to where I want to Practice
Cons:
  • Rumors of patients being flaky
  • Clinic requirements are higher for graduation than others
  • Small town with less to do
  • Harder for my wife to find a job in her field

I think patient scheduling being done for you is a pro. Very few schools teach how to PLACE implants, which is pretty big. I would’ve said San Antonio but IMO with the pros you list with DCG I’m tempted to say that’s better. Idk what you feel the strongest about, but I’d say the home feel and the closeness to friends and family is massive and puts DCG as the better option. Not to mention being closer to where you want to practice. Also higher grad requirements may even be a good thing in terms of getting better clinical experience.

I've been told that if a lot of the pro/cons weigh each other out and money isn't a factor, to choose the school closest to where you want to practice.
Your pro/con lists all have quite legitimate thought and it would be hard for me to choose one over the other as well!
(Congratulations on the acceptances, by the way 🙂)

Georgia since it's closer to where you want to practice. Also closer to your father-in-law if you're taking care of him.
