I'm an AMG about to start intern year at a well-renowned CA program and am interested in knowing how competitive a candidate I would be if I attained strong LOR's from GI faculty. A few years back, the GI dept at my program was in the top 20 according to USNWR but now aren't even ranked (kinda strange). Anyway, does that have any bearing? How far does reputation take you in getting a GI spot? I plan on beginning research as early as possible. Thanks for the input!

You changed your mind from rheum to GI in under 24 hours?

I'm a AMG who will be starting my intern year at a well-renowned university program in CA that has a strong Rheum reputation per USNWR. I was wondering what I need to do to be able to match into a top Rheum. fellowship after residency. How important is the reputation of one's residency program in matching into a good fellowship? Besides research and being a strong resident, what else do I need to focus on? How many residents applying for Rheum go unmatched? Thank you for all of the input!

Can't someone have more than one interest? My post still stands....

I was just curious :)

To answer your question, I think you should be fine. AMG, prominent school, you've already put in motion plans to do research, if you add in strong letters, I don't see why you wouldn't be a very strong applicant.
