Hello!

Is there a good textbook that covers GI material from the first two years (aka everything needed for classes and step 1)?

First Aid is really bare bones on the topic, and I'm not too fond of the textbook by Barrett (which is our required textbook). I checked out FA for Basic Sciences -- Organ Systems only to find a lot of errors. I need something that comprehensively covers GI but isn't 700 pages long....

...help?

Kaplan came to us yesterday and gave out the "Med Essentials" book. I think its a pretty good product to use WITH classes. I wish I got it sooner actually. People generally don't recommend it for Boards (FA), because they feel that Med Essentials is alot of info (more not always being better).

Other than that, people would day a good physiology book like Costanzo (big or brs) and RR Pathology..

Good luck

I love Kaplan. I did their course for Step 1 and Step 2. I used Kaplan Qbank during my second year. I am a slave to Kaplan and will back up almost any of their products.

DO NOT USE MedEssentials

Its a crap resource. Literally everyone who uses it (even the people who like the format, which is primarily tables), wishes they hadn't. First Aid is superior. MedEssentials is designed to be a First Aid competitor and it does not compete.

As to answer the OP's questions, you are asking there to be a book that covers both physiology and pathology for an organ system. Nobody organizes the material that way. You have to combine books, generally a path and a physio book together.

That being said, BRS Physio has superiror physiology knowledge, and is pretty good for GI. Of course, RR Path is the #1 seller, thanks to Goljan. There isn't a "GI" textbook. Instead, I'd recommend getting the best physio book (BRS) and the best path book (RR, though BRS is pretty decent also), and then use your skills and abilities to link the two together.

BRS physio is good, but you might want to take a look at Costanzo's Physiology (she does author the BRS version as well) if you want an expanded explanation
