hi folks,

i need some advice as to what to get for my letter writers or something since i've been accepted. i'm going w/ the obligatory thank you card, of course, but i feel like i should give them more. one idea that my friends and i were throwing around was a bottle of champagne for one of my letter writers since she also just found out that she was voted to be tenured. we figured she could use it for the holidays as well. anyway any ideas are much appreciated and if you think my bottle of champagne idea is total crap let me know.

thanks guys.

I am more or less in the same stage as you are, writting the "thank-you" letter.

I would be cautious against champagne, as they may not like alcohol and take offense, or they might hate the brand that you chose.

I took one of my referee's out to dinner (with my family) and his wife...it was a little on the expensive side (lol ~$400) but it was worth it. I don't think I will be as extravagent with my other referees, but I might give them $60-80 gift certs each to a high end restaurant. I wondered if this too excessive, but my rational is that letters are almost as important as grades/MCAT scores and that they took the time out of their busy lives to help my cause so this is probably the least I can do. Another way at look at it is if your referee's time is worth at least 100-450/hour and most referees may spend 30min-1 hr (on the short side), then they have also spent a fair bit on you!

hmmm well i know my letter writer doesn't take offence at alcohol at all so i'm not worried about that at all. the brand thing does worry me and i certainly can't afford $60 on a gift certificate. i understand that there was a lot of time spent on me, but i don't have that much money. maybe i can scale it down some and give like a $20 gift card to barnes and noble or something.

crysb - So weird. I just asked almost this same question in this forum 10 minutes before you did. And you're in Seattle (I'm in Vancouver)....Whoa, the West Coast has some psychic abilities going on.

oh oops sorry for the redundancy

I've given Starbucks giftcards. If they don't like coffee, they can get tea, pastries, etc. It has gone over well so far! 🙂

I like the book idea. very mature. good idea for a tight budget (totally understandable)

Anymore ideas. Im thinking cigars or wine but I know jack squat about those two things.
