I have a friend that is hoping to match in Anesthesia. I would like to buy her a gift when that happens... I was thinking a reference text would fit the bill. Any suggestions? What does today's resident in gas find the most useful?

Lol, Thanks for the gift advice 🙂 She's not my GF or fiancee'... Her husband can buy those. I just thought an anesthesia version of the " scut monkey" would be helpful. Do you guys have to get your own earpieces for your stethescopes? Maybe a gift certificate to have one made? I've watched this girl grow from a 5 yr old tomboy to a beautiful 25 yo confident woman. I'd like to get something to show her how proud I am of her.

Hmm, if you're thinking along the lines of a version of the scutmonkey, the closest thing would prob be the "Clinical Anesthesia Procedures of the Mass General Hospital" handbook. But first check if she already has one cause some places give em out to med students rotating thru anesthesia.
I like the earring idea too. Maybe you can get her a matching bouffant cap (with her name embroidered on it) and earrings. . . I know I'd love to get a gift like that. Dont know what's proper if you're not her husband, but I'd think that if the earrings werent too extravagant or showy it would be ok. Perhaps medical-themed earrings? Sorry if these suggestions seem too plain, I'm not used to getting expensive gifts. . .just trying to think of what I would have thought was sweet.
Dont know about the pen though, it seems like such a cliche'd gift (and like you said, so easy to lose in a hospital). If I got such a pen, I'd leave it at home in a case maybe on display as artwork, and take the cheap pens with me to work. . .just cause I lose em so easily. But that's just me.

I like the ideas...I'll buy a bottle of good single malt on match day and then squirrel it away until she graduates residency (a lot of assumptions I know). I like the embroidered scrub cap idea. As far as the pen idea goes, I've had the same cheap pen for about 5 yrs now- like cheap sunglasses, I couldn't lose 'em if I tried. I can and have lost expensive ones in a matter of weeks! 😡 Maybe a pair of Birkenstock shoes for the OR? Chicamedica- I bet there's someone out there wondering what to get you! 🙂

Never tried Birckenstocks, but Merrells are another comfy brand, and approximate the value of a textbook (about $60-80).
