I have a friend that is hoping to match in Anesthesia. I would like to buy her a gift when that happens... I was thinking a reference text would fit the bill. Any suggestions? What does today's resident in gas find the most useful?

That is so sweet of you. 😍 A reference text might not be the best thing to get her though, cause a lot of residencies give out a whole library of free ones to the incoming class. Hmm, what else would be a nice present. . . a unique surgical cap (if she has short hair) or bouffant (for long hair)? Probably not quite like a text though. . .

How about some nice earrings instead that match the scrubs where she matches. Yes I am a girl and like the way they look with my bouffant cap! It's a little more personal than a text - might be good or bad depending on the situation!

Lol, Thanks for the gift advice 🙂 She's not my GF or fiancee'... Her husband can buy those. I just thought an anesthesia version of the " scut monkey" would be helpful. Do you guys have to get your own earpieces for your stethescopes? Maybe a gift certificate to have one made? I've watched this girl grow from a 5 yr old tomboy to a beautiful 25 yo confident woman. I'd like to get something to show her how proud I am of her.

A couple of the programs I applied to have you fitted and pay for the earpiece. Maybe after the match you could call the program secretary where she matches and ask. Another gift I would like to get (hence I am suggesting it to you) is a really nice pen - yes I know it sounds a bit trite. Or I have seen some physicians with pens that also have a little stamp on it with their name/degree. So you sign your messy signature and then stamp next to the signature so all can easily see who to page at 3am.

That's a very nice idea Sugar72. Monte Blanc? If she leaves it laying on an anesthesia cart I'll...! Thanks

Hmm, if you're thinking along the lines of a version of the scutmonkey, the closest thing would prob be the "Clinical Anesthesia Procedures of the Mass General Hospital" handbook. But first check if she already has one cause some places give em out to med students rotating thru anesthesia.

I like the earring idea too. Maybe you can get her a matching bouffant cap (with her name embroidered on it) and earrings. . . I know I'd love to get a gift like that. Dont know what's proper if you're not her husband, but I'd think that if the earrings werent too extravagant or showy it would be ok. Perhaps medical-themed earrings? Sorry if these suggestions seem too plain, I'm not used to getting expensive gifts. . .just trying to think of what I would have thought was sweet.

Dont know about the pen though, it seems like such a cliche'd gift (and like you said, so easy to lose in a hospital). If I got such a pen, I'd leave it at home in a case maybe on display as artwork, and take the cheap pens with me to work. . .just cause I lose em so easily. But that's just me.

Maybe you can kinda get hints from her as to what she'd like?

I'd go for a bottle of fine scotch.

I like the ideas...I'll buy a bottle of good single malt on match day and then squirrel it away until she graduates residency (a lot of assumptions I know). I like the embroidered scrub cap idea. As far as the pen idea goes, I've had the same cheap pen for about 5 yrs now- like cheap sunglasses, I couldn't lose 'em if I tried. I can and have lost expensive ones in a matter of weeks! 😡 Maybe a pair of Birkenstock shoes for the OR? Chicamedica- I bet there's someone out there wondering what to get you! 🙂

Make her a t-shirt that reads: "I Pass Gass"

If she wears it she is one hell of a good friend.

Actually, i was going to suggest shoes too (but thought people might go 😱 at the suggestion . . . 😀 ). Like sleep, comfy shoes are a sacred thing. 😍

Never tried Birckenstocks, but Merrells are another comfy brand, and approximate the value of a textbook (about $60-80).

hmmm . . .maybe i ought to start dropping hints. . . 😉

definitely not an earpiece. Noone uses them.

A nice stethescope, like a Litman's, would be the only industry-specific gift I'd give an anesthesia provider.

Alcohol would be a close second....no, sorry, move these to first place..nice case of Silver Oaks Cab, case of Caymus cab, ....and on a less expensive tier, case of Bogle cab, case of Ravenswood Red Zin cab, and on a local level, Pontchartrain Vineyards wines are great, with the exception of their cab reserve.

would you put out?
Since I am married - probably not for 3K, but everybody has their price whether they admit it or not!

OK, THATS A SHOT BELOW THE BELT......

opus...a sought after vintage...1997......that means 9 years of aging...

I'M GETTING MISTY......I NEED A TISSUE....

a case of that, by the way, will by you a week, round trip, to Paris.

A Nerve Stimulator! How many times has the one that's supposed to be on the cart walked! 😡

I thought of the stethescope but it seems most med students buy the top o' the line Lithman with auto trans and power steering when they get acceptd to med school!

I think that would be a cool gift. Useful, specific to anesthesia, and something that most people don't own. I bought one as an MS4 because the cart thieves had already exceeded the threshold of my patience. 🙂
