I have a mentor who has done a tremendous amount in helping me get a fantastic residency spot. I think his help warrants more than just a personal card or email. What kind of gift should I get for an attending surgeon who could probably get whatever he wants?

Refer me to him.

In all seriousness, nothing you 'give' him will cancel your debt. Maybe someday you'll be be able to do him a comparable favor. Until then get him something small, but most importantly, make sure he doesn't regret helping you. i.e. make him look good at your residency so that he consistently hears good things about you and ensure that he enjoys your company. Little things will help, eg. if he enjoys drinking, keep a nice scotch around for when he stops by etc.

I went with Harry and David Pears that I got for half off via groupon.

Although, a med student friend just showed me this website that has machine washable ties [1]. This advisor wouldn't happen to have ranted about white coats and ties as fomites?

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I don't think my mentor drinks coffee. I've operated with him tons of times, literally have never ever seen him complain about being sleepy or seen him taste coffee. WTF. But that does give me the idea to look into some nice tea or tea set or something like that.

As far as suggestions go...I love many of the independent grinders/coffee houses where I live, but god knows where the get their crap. Everything is "premium," "hand selected," "fair trade" but it may as well be next to a slave-labor Columbian cocaine farm. No wonder it taste so good.

I'm just a lowly undergrad, lol, but can you nominate him for your school's mentorship award? And perhaps talk to other mentees of his to see if they'll write letters as well, so you can compile a nomination packet? Mentorship takes a lot of time out of professors' other obligations, and I wish more good mentors would get the recognition they deserve.

True true, I did put his name in, but 1 versus many going into IM, OB, Family Med... kinda beat me 🙁

I'm pretty sure his debt's repaid by now... but I hear what you're saying and agree. Also, fack off. He's all mine. Mine mine mine.

Why do Harry & David pears taste so much better than regular grocery store pears?

Bigger price tags make everything taste better. Wine, champagne, hookers, ugly clothes. Veblen goods.

I went with Harry and David, because they delivered the pears directly 😉.

I was out on interviews and not in town, so it was easiest to just direct ship to their secretaries desk. Discount + convenience factor + prestige goods = win.
