Hello SDNers, I want to begin my thread with absolute praise and gratitude for all that you do. I feel that this service is an absolute blessing. I am grateful that you all take precious time out of your days to help aspiring students. Thank you for all that you do!

I would greatly appreciate your input on where you think that I went wrong this cycle and your thoughts on what I have done since applying (and what I plan on doing for the future, if this cycle continues as is).

Updates since sending in apps

50+ hours as a COVID-19 screener.

Working on 3 research projects. One involves the detection of colon cancer, the other 2 are analyzing long-term clinical impacts of COVID-19.

Took the lead role in implementing an online clinical trial management system at my clinic.

Where I think that I fell short this cycle

I feel that my volunteer hours need work. Additionally, I think that my school list is top-heavy, given my stats. I do not believe that my time of submission was too late. I submitted my primary application in the first week and I completed my secondaries in July-August, with a few in September. However, I do believe that I could work on my writing in these apps.

My plan moving forward

Continue working as a research assistant and working on related projects.

Starting to volunteer weekly in hospice care (5 hours weekly).

Seeking volunteer opportunities to help the homeless in my county.

Apply to DO schools and reevaluate my MD schools for future cycles.

Keeping up with the MCAT in case I need to take it a 3rd time.

Thank you again for your time, and I wish you all safety wellness in these tough times.
Very weak/nonexistent with clinical hours. Doing a research project that includes patients isn’t clinical. You need to get hours (your Covid screen works) where you are working with patients. Scribing is a great option because you get hours and pay and shadowing experience.

I would slow down on the research and work on other parts of your app as well.

Thank you both for your kindness and advice. I just wanted to clarify some points about my research assistant position that I poorly explained in the first text entry. In this position, I do have a good bit of one-on-one experience with patients. This includes doing office visits with patients for one of our registry studies, for which I am the main coordinator. In these visits, I do wellness checkups, administer study questionnaires, answer any study related questions the patient has, and report back to the physician after the visit. Additionally, I also participate in office visits and procedures for our phase II and III trials. I do many of the same tasks described in the registry study, as well as escorting patients to their study-related labs and evaluations and shadowing study procedures. I made sure to talk about these experiences in detail in my applications. Regardless, I will continue to add to my clinical and volunteering experiences moving forward. Being out of university has allowed for more time to pursue these activities, and I am very excited to do so. With that being said, I have contemplated becoming either an EMT through my county's program or a surgical tech at my current job (there is an in-house training program), in addition to starting hospice volunteering next month. Would either of those options be wise, given my current stats/position? Thank you again for your time.
Either are fine, do what you love and love what you do

Here's where I find some disagreement with your assessment. Your one-on-one experience with patients is in the context of clinical research, not medicine. You have contact with patients, but you are not really helping patients with their care nor do you get a chance to see the doctor-patient relationship. It is definitely important work under clinical research and not really under clinical experience.

Sorry for so many questions. I have just been doing a lot of analysis and thinking about the future during these past few weeks. Given what you all have said, in addition to introspection, I realize that I am not currently the most competitive applicant. I know that I want to pursue this career. It is something that I have dreamed about for years. With that said, I want to make sure that I show that interest, rather than telling. I am excited to do more clinical and volunteer work. It will be a great experience to interact with patients and residents in my community. If I end up pursuing these opportunities for more than just one gap year, would it be warranted to do a DIY post-bac or SMP? I'm wondering because, at that point, it would be multiple years since graduating from university. Additionally, if I need to take the MCAT again, would the goal be increasing multiple points from my current score of 512? I believe that this is all that I have for questions. I truly appreciate all of your help. I understand that you all have very demanding professions. I thank you all kindly for your time, and I hope that you stay safe during these challenging times.
You don’t need any GPA repair and DO NOT retake the MCAT. As we said before, you need clinical and non clinical hours. That’s what you need to work on.

Your GPAs are competitive for med school. An SMP or post-bac would be foolish.

Your clinical experience has been with research subjects, not patients. Thus, you need to have clinical exposure, either from volunteering or employment. Yes, COVID is going to delay this. Your health is more important.

Do NOT retake the MCAT either!
