Hi everyone!
So I recently returned from my whirlwind trip to Glasgow, and as promised, here is what I saw, who I met, and what I thought of the school!
First off, I loved it. Plain and simple. We left Thursday night, got there at 6:30 am Glasgow time, and left on Monday afternoon, to get back around 10 pm Monday night, US time.
The main campus is absolutely gorgeous--think old, gothic, beautiful buildings along with some more modern buildings built around it. My sister said it looked like Hogwarts and I'd have to agree with her.
The Vet campus is on the outskirts of the city. Probably about a 30 min walk from the main campus, or a 5 minute drive. (haha, driving with my mother was interesting... left side of the road, roundabouts and all) We met up with an American first-year and his wife, and he gave a us a quick tour of the facilities. Some of the facilities looked a little old--but they are doing a lot of construction and some major upgrades. They are building a brand-new, huge small animal hospital, which our tour guide said would be finished in approx. 2 years---haha--just in time for our class to start clinical experiences and such! We saw Weipers, the equine center, which had some fantastic facilities. We did not make it out to Cochno Estate, but I'm sure it's even more beautiful. Overall--great place and I'm super excited.
Glasgow, the city: Well, the people are amazing and fantastically nice. They are so much more friendly as a rule than you find in most American cities. It's just a nice atmosphere. The night life is fantastic, and every cab driver told me so. There's an underground called the "clockwork orange" because they have orange trains that run in a circle, or something like that. the buildings are gorgeous. We will definitely be walking a lot, because everything seems pretty spread out with the vet campus and main campus and the west end area... but I see that as a good thing!
overall, the school was great, the city was great, and I loved it! All I can say, is that we are going to have the most amazing five years ever!!
Travelling was a pain however. We flew continental, which is one of the few airlines that has a direct flight from New York to Glasgow. However, on the way home we had to fly British Midland from Glasgow to London and then connect on Virgin Atlantic from London to NYC. well, the continental flights are incredibly cramped, although being direct flights does make a big difference. On the way home, Virgin was fantastic (i've always loved them)... the only downside was that they lost my suitcase on the way home and have yet to find it (it's been two days). I would highly recommend getting Miles Cards on one or two airlines ( I wish Virgin went to glasgow!!!) and a friend of mine suggested putting my tuition on a credit card with miles, and then i could really rack up the miles! so we'll see how that goes.
Pictures--I'm sure this is what you really want to see! Well, I have some, but my sister took the majority (think 400 pics--she's really into photography and has an awesome camera) and I have to collect them off of her facebook page which will take some time. But once I have them all organized, mine and hers, then I will load them onto a photo website like flickr or something and then post the link here.
If you have any questions let me know. I've already accepted and I hope you all do too soon! 🙂
