I got the email, but did anyone recieve their acceptance package yet?

I just received the package today (I'm in NY). It has official acceptance letters, info on applying to be a student overseas, and stafford loans. It came in the same semi-sketchy brown envelope as the interview info!

I just saw this and thought of a drunk on the corner with a bottle in a paper bag that had a vet school admit sticking out of it -- totally inappropriate, but there you go. Should get more sleep soon.

Um...the envelope kinda looks like that. Its this weird brown "manilla" envelope that has got the applicants address, but no return address except for that it was stamped in glasgow and great britain! As long as the drunk isnt attached to it its still cool! Haha so wi girl your not too far off!

Thanks for the heads-up!! I'm down in Florida...hopefully I'll get the package this week.

Have any of you made a final decision about going? I'm about 95% sure I'm going.....but I just sent in my FAFSA yesterday, so hopefully I'll be able to get enough loans to be able to cover the entire cost of their program. If not...

Hey guys!

So I'm also about 90% sure I'm going as well. I still have to hear about interviews from Tennessee and Penn, and have yet to hear anything from London. But at this point I'm assuming it's going to be a rejection. Anyhow, I have spring break this coming week and my family was just like "we should go look at the school" so suddenly, I'm going to Glasgow next Thursday to see the school/city/area... I'll let you all know how it goes, and I'm going to take lots of pictures, so I'll be sure to post them online somewhere and link it so you can all see if you want to! I'm really excited about the idea of going to Scotland for vet school... it's going to be a fantastic experience. Not only do we get to go to vet school (a dream come true), but we get to do it in Scotland! how crazy is that?!?!?

Looking forward to it!

~Sarah

Sarah - thats awesome of your family! I would really appreciate any feedback you could give! I am currently trying to decided between Illinois and Glasgow and would love to hear what you have to say and see pictures!

Have an amazing visit!

Sarah - I agree with Calpard...super cool of your family to want to do that. Maybe we'll be roomies! 🙂 Going to Glasgow will let me complete 2 of my life's goals...becoming a Vet and living in Europe for at least 3 years. So I'm super stoked about going over there. Already sent in the FAFSA...now I'm on the hunt for a lender. The only thing that would keep me from going over there is not getting enough $$ with the loans...so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!

PJ -- I don't know much about the bank for grad school, but I borrow from KEY BANK for my undergrad for a private loan, which has worked well. I work with GREAT LAKES for my government stuff. Just some that customer service wise have been great. No idea about their rates though ....

These are the lenders I used, in case you want to check them out:

- CitiBank (Citi Assist loans) for private loans http://www.studentloan.com
- International Education Finance Corporation (IEFC/TERI) for private loans http://www.iefc.com
- Sallie Mae for private and Stafford loans http://www.salliemae.com

*Realize that you will most likely need more than one lender. I maxed out with the "aggregate limit" for Citi Bank, so I then moved on to IEFC who has a higher (if any?) aggregate limit. I did use a co-signer in some cases (my mom) to get lower interest rates.

Thanks Wi Girl and BirdVet!! Very helpful! 🙂

BirdVet -- I'm sure the interest rates were lower when you first started (right now they're at 6.8% for Stafford and 8.5% for GradPlus)...but how much lower was your interest rate with a cosigner? Right now, the cheapest rate I've found is through my credit union at 6.3% for Stafford and 7.5% for GradPlus....without a cosigner.
Ms. Beales in the FinAid office told me those were the only 2 loan types I could get. Is that what you had, or did you have others on top of those??

I think I'm starting to get a little overwhelmed with the amount of debt I'll have at the end of this. I just don't see how anyone can pay this off with a Vet's starting salary. 🙁
Their website said to estimate about 7,200 pounds/year for cost of living. With today's exchange rate....about $14,400/year. Sound about right to you?? Do you remember how much you spent on books/year? Can't find anything about that on the school site. Thanks so much for all your input!!

The cost of living sounds about right...I think I took out a bit more for that, because I flew to and from the USA quite a bit (west coast, meaning more expensive). We didn't have the GradPlus loans available when I was in vet school (I guess any government loan is an improvement over taking out mostly private loans!). So I just have Staffords (sub+unsub that was only allowed to go to $18500...which I know has now increased) and private loans.

My Staffords are at a very low rate - and I consolidated them. I think the rate is 3.3-3.5% off the top of my head. My private loans have a variable interest rate, which has at times been up to 8.5% or more and now is around 6.5% for the majority. I have yet to consolidate those. It's a pain in the rear to have to go through the entire application process with multiple companies just to be able to compare interest rates - and potentially find that you would rather not consolidate.

You're lucky you have Debbie Beals. She seems much more "on the ball" compared to the previous loan person. It used to be such a nightmare dealing with her!

I think I read that if you do consolidate your loans, you typically get a lower interest rate. I'm going to have to look into that further. Thanks for the info!

Sorry to ask again, but do you remember approx. how much you spent on books/year?

Not really...I did buy most of them from Amazon.com (used, if possible) in the USA and then brought them in my luggage to the UK. You save money that way.

Hi everyone!

So I recently returned from my whirlwind trip to Glasgow, and as promised, here is what I saw, who I met, and what I thought of the school!

First off, I loved it. Plain and simple. We left Thursday night, got there at 6:30 am Glasgow time, and left on Monday afternoon, to get back around 10 pm Monday night, US time.

The main campus is absolutely gorgeous--think old, gothic, beautiful buildings along with some more modern buildings built around it. My sister said it looked like Hogwarts and I'd have to agree with her.

The Vet campus is on the outskirts of the city. Probably about a 30 min walk from the main campus, or a 5 minute drive. (haha, driving with my mother was interesting... left side of the road, roundabouts and all) We met up with an American first-year and his wife, and he gave a us a quick tour of the facilities. Some of the facilities looked a little old--but they are doing a lot of construction and some major upgrades. They are building a brand-new, huge small animal hospital, which our tour guide said would be finished in approx. 2 years---haha--just in time for our class to start clinical experiences and such! We saw Weipers, the equine center, which had some fantastic facilities. We did not make it out to Cochno Estate, but I'm sure it's even more beautiful. Overall--great place and I'm super excited.

Glasgow, the city: Well, the people are amazing and fantastically nice. They are so much more friendly as a rule than you find in most American cities. It's just a nice atmosphere. The night life is fantastic, and every cab driver told me so. There's an underground called the "clockwork orange" because they have orange trains that run in a circle, or something like that. the buildings are gorgeous. We will definitely be walking a lot, because everything seems pretty spread out with the vet campus and main campus and the west end area... but I see that as a good thing!

overall, the school was great, the city was great, and I loved it! All I can say, is that we are going to have the most amazing five years ever!!

Travelling was a pain however. We flew continental, which is one of the few airlines that has a direct flight from New York to Glasgow. However, on the way home we had to fly British Midland from Glasgow to London and then connect on Virgin Atlantic from London to NYC. well, the continental flights are incredibly cramped, although being direct flights does make a big difference. On the way home, Virgin was fantastic (i've always loved them)... the only downside was that they lost my suitcase on the way home and have yet to find it (it's been two days). I would highly recommend getting Miles Cards on one or two airlines ( I wish Virgin went to glasgow!!!) and a friend of mine suggested putting my tuition on a credit card with miles, and then i could really rack up the miles! so we'll see how that goes.

Pictures--I'm sure this is what you really want to see! Well, I have some, but my sister took the majority (think 400 pics--she's really into photography and has an awesome camera) and I have to collect them off of her facebook page which will take some time. But once I have them all organized, mine and hers, then I will load them onto a photo website like flickr or something and then post the link here.

If you have any questions let me know. I've already accepted and I hope you all do too soon! 🙂

Sarah

Sarah...thanks SO much for your post!! I think it's great that you had the chance to visit the school and city....even greater that you posted your experience here! 😀

I'm super excited. I sent out my FAFSA a while ago, recieved my SAR report. Just not sure where to go from here. Do you know? I emailed Debbie Beales, but they're on holiday again. Not sure if I need to wait to hear something from her regarding my SAR (or if I even have to send her a copy of my report) or if I can just sign up with a lender right now. I'm just trying to figure out how I'm supposed to know how much I will be approved for on the loan so I know if I can afford going. Does Debbie tell me that or does the lender? 😕

Anything you could tell me on the subject would be greatly appreciated!! 🙂

Sarah thats great information and sounds like a crazy but wonderful trip! It so exciting.

I was still in the process of deciding between Glasgow and Illinois when I got my phone call monday for my Penn interview, so my decision has been put on the back burner for now!

But the additional information is always helpful! Glad you had a great time and loved it!

PJLovin--I'm not sure about any of that stuff... sorry!

Calpard--Congrats on the Penn interview and Good Luck!!!

fantastic! thanks Cindy!

Bumpity bump!

I saw 2 or 3 others listed under Glasgow in the "Final Decisions" thread. You guys still out there?? I'm sending in my deposit this week...just wondering where you all are planning on living (on/off campus); & when you're moving out there (I think classes start Sept 22). So excited about heading over there and finally meeting my classmates! 😀

Wow, I'm slow. I've been unable to figure out why it was C/O 2013 until just this moment, even though on some level I knew it's a 5 year program.

Hi people!
I just wanted to get to know some people who will be attending The University of Glasgow this coming fall for vet medicine. I think it would be good to have some connections before traveling to Europe, how many of you are sure that you will be attending?

I'm going for sure!

Just sent my deposit in!

Yay!! Glad we have another one to add to the group!! 😀 I'm definitely going too!! Sent my deposit in last week and applied for accomodation. Things may change, but as it is right now I'm heading over there like the 3rd week of august.

I was thinking of starting a 'Glasgow c/o 2013' myspace group so we can start to get to know one another....anyone interested in something like that??

im for sure going as well---sent in my deposit last week!!! i havent applied for housing yet, but i will within the week. ive already started going through all my crap & getting rid of stuff. i know classes start sept 22....does anyone know when students can move in??

yeah, i think a myspace or facebook group is a great idea!

I've already started throwing stuff out too!! 🙂 I'm going to have a huge garage sale also....the more money I can make beforehand, the better!! haha

The residence halls are officially open for move-in on Sept 12. But you can apply for early accomodation if you need to move in earlier than that. For that, I think you have to pay by the night, and whichever one they let you move into early, is not a guarantee that that's the hall you'll have for the whole first year....so you may have to move again on the 12th. I think I'm going to get a hotel for a couple of days until I can move into my guaranteed place. Also, Freshers and Orientation week starts on the 15th...yay!

Oh and...are you guys taking a laptop over there? I need to buy one before I go. The IT Services website says to avoid Windows Vista because if you have a problem using it on their network they can't support you. But I've talked to some alumni who say their friends have Vista and haven't had a problem using it. Just trying to figure out if I should risk it....since the majority of laptops are already pre-programmed with Vista. Or should I switch out Vista and put in XP??

Hey all,

MySpace group has been started...join and let's start getting to know each other!! 😀

Also, feel free to share any info you discover about housing, visas & passports, loan info, etc. The more we share the easier the Big move will be for everyone!

To each his own...I stayed in halls (the infamous Wolfson Hall!) in my first year and don't regret it. It was an "interesting" experience. I also never lived more than 10 minutes away (via foot) from the vet school, and don't regret it. You will actually end up spending most of your time at the vet school come 2nd and 3rd year onwards. That 45 minute walk is a good thing...you need that UV light (even in the rain).

Lloyds bank isn't the only one out there. Most people find RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland) to be wonderful (the one down the street from the vet school especially). I banked with Clydesdale and they were OK as well.

True, to each his own. This is the most current information we can offer.

Everyone over 20 living in dorms now has expressed the following:

Wolfson food leaves a lot to be desired. Vegetarians are especially struggling. Do you like your 5 a day? You are only allowed one piece of fruit.

Wolfson is the most social dorm, so you won't lack opportunities to make friends. This also comes with 18 yo's partying constantly, raiding personal food stashes, and depriving you of sleep.

If you can get into Queen Margaret, it is self catering and we have heard good things. But, this year they only let in 1 international vet student.

Lots of people live close to the vet school, but it is a bubble and many people chose to live closer to the west end for 1st and 2nd year when you have class on both campuses. It also saves you money on taking cabs or buses home when you go out in town.

Everyone we know using a bank other than Lloyds have had numerous complaints. No one we know of has had problems with Lloyds.

Hope these comments help make your move to scotland smoother. All three of us love it here and we hope your first year is as fun as ours. So seek as many opinions as you can. You should be getting your big vets soon. They will be a vital source.

To those that are current Glasgow students:

I had a question about getting a Visa. On the Glasgow paperwork it said that in order to get the Visa, you have to show proof to the Visa people that you can fund the entire program. Considering that the majority of Vet students pay their tuition with loans, and considering that you apply for a loan every year (you don't just get a lump sum for the total), how can you prove that you can fund it? When I asked how I can do this, the school told me the following:

"I would suggest that you state that you will be funding yourself by taking out loans and name the loan companies. You could also enclose evidence of the process you are going through for the loan which will cover this coming year. If the loans do not cover the full amount, you could also include evidence of savings, family support etc. The visa you receive should cover the full duration of your programme plus 4 months."

Is this what you did when you applied for your Visa? Thanks so much!

Hey - you prolly already have answered your visa question by now, but in case you haven't I'm pretty sure I included photocopies of my disbursement notifications from my loan companies when I applied for my visa. It was either that or I showed what I had from them at that point in time... From what I remember they weren't super anal about the application - I was just more worried about sending it in with enough time to get it back (b/c people told me that it can take forever!)
