GME programs on probation

Maybe a dumb question I'm not sure, but how big of a warning sign is this? Is it common? Should one avoid all together applying to programs who are on, or were on probation?

it's usually a big warning sign actually. but find out WHY they were on probation. then judge if you would want to go there. if it's something minor or a technicality, they i'd probably still apply. however i must say i didn't apply to any programs on probation.

It totally depends on why they're on probation. If it's an issue of getting adequate numbers of certain procedures, that can be hard to fix. If it's that the residents were doing adequate numbers of procedures but weren't documenting them properly, that may be easier to fix and not as big of an issue. But unfortunately, any program on probation is that much closer to getting its accreditation yanked, so you really have to ask if it's worth taking that risk.

Of course there is a list of all programs on probation. It's public record!

Click on accredited program history. Then select the specialty and the state. You can view the accreditation of every program (ie number of years).

I know I interviewed at JMH program that was on probation for a number of reasons and even though I liked the program and location etc. I felt that it was not worth the risk so I didn't even rank them. They probably thought I ranked them because truly I was excited about them ...but no way Jose

Programs are not put on probation for minor problems or a technicality. Instead those things (and some rather bigger) are noted in the accreditation letter. We are expected to have them fixed by the next visit.

Programs on probation either have a very big new problem or have multiple problems repetitively.

Oh, there are some other reasons:

- a residency coordinator who is not particularly good in keeping track of paperwork.
- ticked off the site visitor at the time of the review

I have seen one RRC report for a program that was on probation that mainly expressed the anger of the site visitor towards the program director. RRC is blind. They will eat whatever the site visitor sends them.

Howard Radiation Oncology has apparently lost its accreditation after being on probation for a number of years. At least the signs are there. They withdrew from the match this year, and their present residents are making diligent inquiries about available positions.

Ouch, Im sure rad onc spots dont exactly grow in trees!

They will make well informed internists/FMs at the least.

That also happened to a couple of other rad onc programs as well (EVMS and NYMC in Westchester NY). I wonder what those residents will end up doing.
