You know shadowing is one of the unwritten requirements to get into medical school... but it's so vague! How much should you shadow? What specialties? What do you need to do? The pre-medical mind revolts at this lack of a well-defined track. Well, be paralyzed with concern no longer: with Gnomes' Shadowing Checklist, the planning and execution of comprehensive and balanced shadowing experience is as easy as simple addition! Just keep shadowing until you accumulate enough points in each section, and that thick envelope is as good as yours.

(This is intended as humor. See the attachment. No, I'm not this cynical about people or medicine, just about some of my fellow pre-meds.)

Edit: updated. Thanks for suggestions and typo-finding.

Brilliant!

Recommend edit as follows:

Section II: -4 points if you caused the Code Blue.

Section III: +2 points if patient verbally abuses you and spittle hits your face. But +3 if the spit hits your eye shield or face mask. (Could also be in Section V)

Section IV: +1 if you meet an intern who precipitates an Ortho Service transfer by lowering the bed rails.

Section V: +1 if you discuss docs malpractice concerns. -2 if doc starts sobbing when relating personal history of paid malpractice claims.

Section VI: 0 for shadowing internationally.

Section VII: +1 if you observe a delivery (of infant, not pizza).

Awe! I like it! 😍

This is great!

+1 to Cat's recommendations, and just fix the minor typos of "HIPPA" (should be HIPAA) and "an doctor" (obvious).

*Rates thread 5 star*

Hilarious, gnomes. Strong work. 😉

It was awesome lol! I loved the part where it said -1 points for asking if the patient has lung cancer, -2 points if she actually has it lol.

I laughed so hard reading this. Thanks!

10/10 😀

Wow, I get a 31....does that mean I get in??

Thanks everyone!

Sounds good to me, but it's hard to say. I don't think we'll be seeing statistics on the checklist score vs. chance of admission from the AAMC anytime soon.

(Incidentally, I also got a 31 before the latest revision. It would be interesting to actually see what people's scores are. Some of the questions actually are, after all, indicative of a good shadowing experience - although any negative points are worrisome 🙂 )

stupid question, what's an academic physician?

stupid question, what's an academic physician?

Your interviewer.

Seriously, though, an academic physician holds a professorship at a medical school. As I understand it, as a career, it generally means less pay, but you do get to see more interesting diseases and do research.

This is great! I'm definitely posting an entry in my blog directing people to this -- it's definitely amusing but overall is really helpful. 👍
