A patient is crowdfunding her co-pay for a SCS trial. Is it ethical to perform the trial at HOPD versus MD Office if you know that the price will be substantially less in MD office?

I believe that it would be ethical if the patient and the crowdfunding donors were aware what the costs would be at both locations. It would not be the moral choice to perform it in HOPD.

Depending on the insurance coverage, the copay may be less at HOPD.

Copays and what comes out of a patient’s pocket are not necessarily the same as what is charged to insurance.

And some physicians do not offer in office procedures. You are implying that doctors who do not do them in office (ie ASC or HOPD) must “abandon” their doctor-patient relationship and refer out these patients to other doctors....
